@Chrissy McEvoy Depends on how you define America and whether you only look at modern organizations. Lacrosse has been played by first nations people for over 900 years. European "immigrants" picked it up by the 17th century.
I am an Indian, and we already compete in cricket with Australia, Australian cricketers are very much liked in India. Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting introduced the game to India, and at the moment it is becoming very popular, especially in the eastern parts of India.
I like that cricket is something that draws India and Pakistan together. Two great nations brought together by their love of a game. Sure there is intense rivalry between the teams, but it's something people from both nations can agree on, without becoming political.
This is the best made promotional video i've ever seen for the AFL. And also so instructional. I'm an Aussie expat and I forget your name (voice over guy) (Ed??). It's a brilliant production and I trust you were handsomely rewarded.

I as a Canadian have been saying we need a sport focused on a single ball that is go-go-go like Soccer but also engaging and interesting like dodgeball and requiring brutality like rugby and the directives of volleyball. So people told me to come here and I must say it doesn't disappoint...

just seen the entire match for the first time, amazingly spectacular game, I wish it was played worldwide, I'd like to see the world cup, to me it is not only a mixture of soccer & rugby, I also notice elements of handball, volleyball & basketball 😀👊
Well, there is Inter Rules or "International Rules", but it's a mix of two sports: Gaelic Football (Irish) and Australian Football (some of what you have just witnessed). There's an annual two tests of Inter Rules against Ireland and Australia where they compete to win the Cup. I don't watch it, but it's certainly out there. The few huge differences in the sport, however, is; One, they play on a rectangular field, instead of an oval. This is a Gaelic Trait. Two, they use a round-ball, but can still handpass, kick, and even bounce like we Aussies do with our Sherrin (the ball in Australian Rules). And three, probably the biggest difference is that they have 3 ways of scoring (that I know of). One way is to kick the ball into a soccer-like net, the other is to kick the ball over a bar that hangs over the net, and the last way is to kick it between two poles guarding the barred/net like a behind in Aussie Rules. I don't know where you can watch it on TV so it may be worth googling. :)
uTubeDude I'd figured it was on TV, I just don't know what network shows it. Never really seen it on the usual footy TV stations like Seven, but it could be that Fox Footy broadcasts it, being a football-only station in terms of Rules, I suppose.
I'm a yank living in Thailand, get games via ABC. Footy is easily my favorite sport. Keeping trying to spread the news to my American friends back "home". They could watch early weekend matches on west coast... I get them around 10:30 am Thai time which would be 8:30 pm US west coast. Maybe this US dearth of sports might lead some to give footy a gander (and then get hooked... )
I started watching during the Pandemic. I decided to check it out because I heard a lot of positive things about the sport. I ended up choosing the Sydney Swans because of their consistency of success, as well as their young players because of their strong potential with how Sydney has had numerous successful and quick rebuilds. Anyways, I’m looking forward to seeing the Sydney Swans become a dominant Club once again in the coming years and as an American Sports Viewer, I absolutely love watching the AFL alone with its unique playing style and high scores. Also, Carn the Swans 🦢 🔴⚪️
Exciting times for Swans fans now with Buddy back in the side. The style of football being played is a lot more attacking than what Sydney used to be renowned for. Enjoy.

I came here to learn about the sport my grandpa played, so it turns out that I'm 25% Aussie and the grandson of a 100% badass
as an american, AFL is meh. why does the rest of the world think that running around like 5 year olds is fun to watch? that's why americans don't like soccer or rugby and afl is no different...its just a bunch of grown men running around like 5 year olds. thank god we have the NFL where every play is planned, every person has a specific assignment and the team works together in unison to achieve an objective, 'MURICA!
+SVanTha Americans don't like soccer? Average attendance for Major League Soccer is now higher than the NBA and NHL. What about the massive American presence at both the men's and women's World Cups? The sport is the faster growing spectator sport in North America. Aussie rules won't get there, but your reasoning is incredibly flawed.

IIRC Gaelic football in Ireland is almost the same and no one knows why. AFL is way better funded, tho. So, not sure which is easier to get a hold of in UK
I'm biased being Aussie but totally agree. Imo the barriers to international growth is the physicality and complicated rules. Many outside of Australia are likely intimidated by the sheer level of tackles, bumping, etc. without much protection. Also, as someone who's followed the game for years and love it, I still dunno what holding the ball and prior opportunity is
@@pete89111 The biggest barrier to entry is the only way to watch internationally is to pay a huge fee. No one is going to pay to watch something they don't know what it is.
It's really interesting to see how ball sports morphed in different areas. The same mother sport lead to Rugby league and union, Asso. Football or Soccer, American Gridiron Football and this. Hope to one day watch a game over there.
Went to Australia 2 years ago and AFL was on TV in all the bars. Unfortunately my friends I went to visit weren't into it so they couldn't tell me the rules. Now that I have a rudimentary understanding it seems interesting.

These sportsmen are by far the most athletic in football games. First saw footie in the early 80's on ESPN. Then they stopped airing it. Recently I purchased a sports package that included Fox Soccer Plus. I'm not much of a soccer fan but it shows plenty of rugby and AFL. I'm hooked on AFL
It makes sense why this has shadowed football in Australia. This looks absolutely amazing and easy to understand. Unfortunately, football is to dominant in Europe so we do not really get to focus a lot in side sports.
I remember me and my friends accidentally watching this on Eurosport when we were 7-8-9 years old. We were amazed: Tackling, hand balling, oval ball and pitch; unlike anything we had seen before. After that I haven't thought much of it, until today when I for some reason suddenly remembered it. This led me first to Wikipedia and second to this t´youtube video. Next Im searching for a match to see it again for the first time in 35 years.
Im an American who has been watching Aussie Rules since I was 8 years old...and still follow it today (and Im in my 40s). Alot of us enjoy watching Aussie Rules, but the problem is that you hafta find it on certain sports channels on cable that you get if you pay for the larger/expensive packages like Fox Football Channel.
I'm an American living in the USA and have a subscription at watchafl.com.au Love it as I can watch all games either live or replay. The pre-season is free, sign up for that and see if you like it. The 2018 AFL pre-season starts Feb 24.
Robert Brown, buy the international package from the club you support and you'll save a little and get some bonus goodies. I got watchafl for $US134 through the Pies, along with the annual book and a bumper sticker and a black and white scarf. Watchafl at the highest bitrate in HD on a big screen looks great.
This game is nuts!!! I'm an American and played football, basketball, baseball my whole life and just got done watching f rugby 7s trying to figure the rules out....thinking that was nuts. But then I found myself channel surfing and coming across Hawthorne vs Carlton AFL on FS2....I had to look up the rules. This looks like so much fun!!
If you're outside Australia, like I am, you can watch online at watchafl.com.au The women's season just started and I believe you can sign up and watch that for free. The men's preseason is also free. Pick a team, cheer for them, and you'll likely get hooked.
+the 6ix god Its hard to reach a nation dominated by NFL, especially the fact you don't have stadiums big enough to host a match, remember you can fit 2 NFL fields into 1 AFL ground.
This is a lot more fun than American Football. The problem I have with American Football is that the game stops every second and a half. Once every blue moon someone scores a touchdown, which is the only time you see a little action. In Australian Football, the action never stops. The bigger field makes it super interesting, as well as the Mark rule. Well done Australia
@@johnl5350 You're wrong. Soccer is great, despite the con artists who fake fouls. American football does suck to me. Australian football seems to have brought some life to that boring sport. But it's OK if you like American football. Props to you. You're not alone. But I honestly can't stand it.
There is less than 13 minutes of actual game play in a college pro US football game of you time all plays from the time the ball is hiked and the whistle blows the play dead. So it takes 3+ hours to complete 13 minutes of actual game play.
@@timsummers870 I love both American Football and Soccer but don't act like soccer is more exciting simply because they don't stop play very often. 90% of the game is just meaningless passes between teammates at midfield. At least in American Football, every play is played at full speed and counts.
Yep, its a great game. Its very exciting to watch. The good thing about AFL too is that anyone can play, if you're really tall or short, it doesnt matter , there is a position on the field for you, but you need to be fit. Some AFL players can run up to 15km's per game.
+GamingWithMtS It's just that its unrealistic in today's game, as games where 250 points are scored are getting extremely rare. I think we can all agree that the higher scoring footy games are almost always the better ones, which is a shame
I grew up on this game when there was only 12 teams. I was also the sport we played at school on Saturday''s with real coaches, it was a game you take all your frustrations out on and boy energy and go nuts.
I came here from watching The Biggest Loser AU. Coming from Canada I have never heard of this and after seeing this video I know for sure this may be the only sport I can manage to watch. Loved the video, very informative and those angles were amazing, made me feel hype with those screaming fans. The mixture of the what I call the 'boring' sports into one melting pot and out comes probably the most entertaining and daring sport out there. Now all I need are tickets to Australia and Melbourne Cricket Ground. #newgoaloftheyear
Deede Chai there’s a Canadian who played in the grand final for Sydney the grand final and Anzac Day 25th of April are probably the best games to go to Anzac Day is probably easiest to get tickets to tickets go on sale before the season starts
Obviously as an American I watch NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL, because that's what's on TV. But this AFL stuff sure looks like fun. I've made it my life goal to at least try AFL, cricket, and rugby. Right now they don't make much sense but it doesn't seem too hard to learn
A midfield player would routinely run about 17 kilometres at quick pace in a game whilst also getting battered by opposition. Not a game for the feint of heart.
I personally don't think I could get into this. But it is pretty interesting. Above all I appreciate the scale of the sport. I know there's a group of guys playing it in my country.
As an American who is a big American Football fan and understands the basics of rugby, I really appreciated this. Thank you. I get the sense that a bunch of guys in Australia decided that rugby was too boring, so they created this. Very interesting. Looks like you would have to have seriously good cardio, among a bunch of other skills. One question: what is the advantage of passing the ball by hitting it with your fist as opposed to just passing it normally? I assume it would take quite a while to get good at sending it very far with any accuracy.
The advantage of handballing is it is generally faster, and easier to do under pressure. Trying to get the ball down straight onto your boot while being tackled is a lot harder than moving it on by hand. It's good for in close and tight passes, where kicking is less practical. Sometimes it's also used to help with fast ball movement- where it's likely a kick would be smothered or not get up and over an opponent to a loose team mate. One tactic or way of moving the ball is called overlap run, where your team runs the ball in waves and draws tacklers in before handpassing it out to loose runners adjacent or just in front or behind the ball carrier. It's not that easy to kick it accurately to somebody running 5 metres out to the right or left of you while running, bouncing, and trying to suck in opponents towards the ball enough for them not to be able to affect the next receiver.
@@BrandonjSlippingAway Thanks for the explanation. Thats interesting, and it makes perfect sense. Actually, I watched this again after I commented, and I realized that i didnt notice that it was the one of the only ways they can pass the ball.
Yeah man, AFL seems boring to people because of all the points and goals that are kicked but some unique great goals are always fun to watch, there was one last night!!!
Mate - I know trolling is fun, but you just look like an ignorant fool. You know its not an imitation of rugby, just as baseball is not a poor mans version of cricket... Oh wait...
Im Filipino but I gotta say I enjoyed watching the games. 1 1/2 year so far of knowing the sport and sometimes still confused regarding the flow. Thank you Aussie friends.
Afl is like an action movie. So entertaining and you can never get enough of it. It’s great that I’m from an area of Australia that’s embraces this legendary sport so well! And btw, Manchester United is not allowed to reply to this comment if it’s something to do with soccer being the greatest sport on earth 😂
+randomuserlfc I thought the exact same thing.... why get a yank to commentate on an Australian game. It's so lame... yet so something the AFL would do.
Damn, this is badass as all get out!! I live in Texas and everyone here thinks they're so tough bc they play American Football. These Australian guys would kill any American Football player w 3 punches or less, they're huge!! When you get guys that big over here in America 999 out of 1000 will be slower than a very fast 8th grader and as coordinated as a hyper dog! Guys that big in America are straight up just used to hit other big guys or to get rebounds, you put one of those Aussie teams in the NFL I guarantee they win the Superbowl by their 2nd or 3rd year in the league (very possibly their 1st) and then they'll win every Superbowl after their first one lol AFL is def my new thing
Checking out Aussie Rules! 🇮🇳 Huge fan of Australia - your sports culture is electric! Cricketers like Warne, Gillie, Ponting, Cummins etc. - absolute legends! Aussie cricket is like a cultural export, and it's made a real impact in India. The MCG, SCG, Perth, Gabba, Adelaide Oval - legendary! Since Aussies are so good at cricket, I figured their favorite sport, AFL, has gotta be something special. And wow, it is spectacular! Keen to watch and follow more. 🇦🇺
I'm American and I enjoy AFL very much for the discipline and effort the players display. They don't stop every 10 seconds to cry to the refs like most of our sports here or act like divas that the NBA and NFL have become.
I just started watching it today, it looks like a much more exciting version of punting. If I was an nfl scout, I'd be looking at these guys for a punter. They are trained in punting accuracy. Plus not afraid to put a lick on someone if the returner breaks one, and know how to move around to avoid a blocked punt and quick reaction.
@@thecensoredmuscle563 agreed. I've definitely noticed a big wave of Aussie punters in NCAA football and some of these guys are fairly dynamic and can do those extra little things to get a punt off or put some creative spin/wobble on the ball.

I am an Indian, and we already compete in cricket with Australia, Australian cricketers are very much liked in India. Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting introduced the game to India, and at the moment it is becoming very popular, especially in the eastern parts of India.
Us Aussies love Indians for their passion of Cricket, always such common ground between the two nations! Right on brutha
I like that cricket is something that draws India and Pakistan together. Two great nations brought together by their love of a game. Sure there is intense rivalry between the teams, but it's something people from both nations can agree on, without becoming political.
Awesome
I didn't know ricky bought it here. I would love us to have a league
The only reason I’m watching this is because I’m from Australia and my boyfriend plays this so late night studying

I as a Canadian have been saying we need a sport focused on a single ball that is go-go-go like Soccer but also engaging and interesting like dodgeball and requiring brutality like rugby and the directives of volleyball. So people told me to come here and I must say it doesn't disappoint...
Pick a team, follow all their games in a season and you'll be hooked. WatchAFL.com is for us footy nuts outside of Australia.
Looks like fun! And that field they play on is HUGE!! I'd love to try sometime

just seen the entire match for the first time, amazingly spectacular game, I wish it was played worldwide, I'd like to see the world cup, to me it is not only a mixture of soccer & rugby, I also notice elements of handball, volleyball & basketball 😀👊
+jessie md it's shown on TV every year
uTubeDude I'd figured it was on TV, I just don't know what network shows it. Never really seen it on the usual footy TV stations like Seven, but it could be that Fox Footy broadcasts it, being a football-only station in terms of Rules, I suppose.

Exciting times for Swans fans now with Buddy back in the side. The style of football being played is a lot more attacking than what Sydney used to be renowned for. Enjoy.

I recently found out that my Mom traveled from the U.S. to Australia when I was in the womb to meet her father for the first time, who was an AFL player back in the 60s (Mom was born in 1969) He unfortunately passed away before I ever got the chance to meet him. As an American, I approve this sport.
as an american, AFL is meh.
why does the rest of the world think that running around like 5 year olds is fun to watch? that's why americans don't like soccer or rugby and afl is no different...its just a bunch of grown men running around like 5 year olds.
thank god we have the NFL where every play is planned, every person has a specific assignment and the team works together in unison to achieve an objective, 'MURICA!
notice Americans are the only ones who think so your NFL is for soft cocks wearing full body armour

1. NBA - $4.58 million
2. MLB - $4.17 million

if soccer is as popular and selling out more than NBA and NHL, where's the money going?

I'm from the UK. This sport needs to go global it looks amazing
I just bought a ball in the UK

These sportsmen are by far the most athletic in football games. The ability they show to bounce and shoot, the braveness to jump over 3 meters and fall with the ball, the speed, resistence to tackles and even to get somebody else’s foot on their backs is just astonishing.

Hey don't you know about Brisbane lions so scored 130p in round 23 2015. And won by 10p
+dabooda49
Not sure why that's a problem.
A game where 250 points are scored simply says there was no defense played by one or both sides
+GamingWithMtS It's just that its unrealistic in today's game, as games where 250 points are scored are getting extremely rare. I think we can all agree that the higher scoring footy games are almost always the better ones, which is a shame
+dabooda49 Scores are coming back up again; we had 6 games this weekend where there were scores over 100.
I grew up on this game when there was only 12 teams. I was also the sport we played at school on Saturday''s with real coaches, it was a game you take all your frustrations out on and boy energy and go nuts.

The mixture of the what I call the 'boring' sports into one melting pot and out comes probably the most entertaining and daring sport out there. Now all I need are tickets to Australia and Melbourne Cricket Ground. #newgoaloftheyear

just learn it and it would become easier, u should come down to australia and watch it, it seriously is a very good and hype game
Fascinated by the stamina of the athletes and of how spectacular the game looks!
A midfield player would routinely run about 17 kilometres at quick pace in a game whilst also getting battered by opposition. Not a game for the feint of heart.
I miss footy... I used to play and watch it when I was in Australia. I wish there was a footy league here in Spain
Wow, thats more fun and dynamic than soccer where players score only 1-4 times a game or american football where the game stops every minute
Yeah man, AFL seems boring to people because of all the points and goals that are kicked but some unique great goals are always fun to watch, there was one last night!!!

When you get guys that big over here in America 999 out of 1000 will be slower than a very fast 8th grader and as coordinated as a hyper dog! Guys that big in America are straight up just used to hit other big guys or to get rebounds, you put one of those Aussie teams in the NFL I guarantee they win the Superbowl by their 2nd or 3rd year in the league (very possibly their 1st) and then they'll win every Superbowl after their first one lol AFL is def my new thing
have a look at one of your fellow Texans www.collingwoodfc.com.au/video/2019-03-12/mason-cox-the-story-thats-hard-to-believe

AFL is the best sport by far
boring
