  • This is a special TNF game on ABC Sports, as the (6-2) Chargers take on the (4-4) Raiders. Oakland can come within one game of San Diego in the AFC Western Division. If it turns out the other way, then the Chargers would take a 3 game lead over the Raiders, which could make it tough for them to make the playoffs.

    Thanks for this rare upload! Great to see the 1979 Raiders clicking on all phases. With the emergence of Lester Hayes, Willie Jones and Mike Davis in this game we got a little preview of how awesome the following year would be.

      The Raiders secondary was a great example of what a fine Defensive Backs coach Willie Brown was! R. I. P. Original #24!

      @@shanetrimble9265 I was fortunate enough to see Willie Brown play in person in 1975 and he was always communicating with and pointing to where he wanted his fellow DB's to line up before each play, it was like having a coach on the field in the middle of every play and of course, Willie Brown intercepted a pass in that game.

    1:21:03 - The Chargers were still in the game after this touchdown. They just couldn't get it done in the final quarter of play. The Raiders were in a zone that night.

    This was a great game. I swear to God if Coryell isn't inducted next year when they could have up to 20 enshrinees at Canton then he will never get in :(

    • @davidcobb2693
      @davidcobb2693 4 года назад +1

      Coryell's regular season coaching record of 111-83-1, a .572 winning percentage should merit induction, but 3-6 in playoff games hurts and his 22-34 record in his final 4 seasons doesn't help his cause. His 1974-1976 record with the Cardinals was 31-11 and with the Chargers from 1979-1982 he was 39-18, 47-22 if you add his 1978 record after he took over in Week 5.

    • @SingleTax
      @SingleTax 9 месяцев назад

      Except for 1981, the Raiders *owned* Coryell's Chargers. No game demonstrated this more than the Monday Night game those teams played in 1982.

      Not to offend you, because you are clearly a Coryell fan. But no way does Coryell belong in the HOF. Without a doubt, Coryell was an offensive genius. But a Hall of Fame head coach has to instill discipline, and Coryell - whether in St. Louis or San Diego, coached the most turnover-prone, penalized teams year in and year out. He was the antithesis of Bill Belichick, whose teams made few mistakes and finished every block and tackle.

    • @SPTO
      @SPTO 11 дней назад

      @@joeleicht5764 I can certainly see that argument however the offense that he created was one of the most forward thinking offenses of all time and the concepts of said offense has been a key part of the football playbook since then.
      That said i'm glad that Coryell finally got into the Hall as he was deserving of it IMO.

    I was wondering if #26 Clarence Hawkins, and #27 Frank Hawkins who played for the Raiders a couple of years later are related. They are built the same, and had the same style of walk. Frank Hawkins got his Super Bowl ring in SBXVIII.

    According to Dan Moldea in his book "Interference", this game was rigged for the Raiders to cover the point spread. The referee in this game was implicated for fixing games, although the NFL never made this public information.

    The year San Diego got shut out by the innefective Denver Broncos 7-0 at Denver because of lack of kicker. San Diego missed 3 field goals. Using that has been, Roy Gerala. Seattle would knock the Raiders out of the playoffs 29-24 last game of the season. Chargers as usual would flop in the playoffs to a quarterback named Gifford Neilson. They had homefield advantage throughout the playoffs with a 12-4 record.
