    goodvideo thanks! We have had a sword just like this hanging in our basement for all my life, 60+ years. my siblings and I thought it came through our dad's family, but mom said her uncle served in the South Pacific in WWII and may have brought it home. How it ended up in our basement on display next to dads gun rack is a mystery

    I’m looking at purchasing a sword. I’m joining the Navy as my parents before me, when I join it’ll mark me as the 7th naval generation of my family. I’m excited but most importantly I want to make my parents proud. My great uncle passed away at the attack of Pearl Harbor, which led my family to join the navy after his passing. It wasn’t totally a bad thing tho, my parents both joined the navy and boarded the kitty hawk. Which if you don’t know was stationed in Japan and that’s where my parents met ironically enough. I mainly want to purchase a sword as a gift and symbol of honor to my parents and their serves to our country. If you got any advice I would love to hear it:)

      @@thesamuraimonkey42 well I watched the video and you said the original Type 95's were truly meant as a weapon and were made to last. I'm wondering do you maybe know if there's any replica's of it that are just as well as made as the original? I'd love one to practice cutting with that closely mimicks the original since it would be a waste damaging a $1500 sword.
      Universal Swords makes a Shin Gunto replica for $150 made out of EN9 (similar to 1055 steel) but I have no idea how that steel compares to the one used in the original Type 95's.
      The only other option I've been able to find is the Yasukuni Captain's Gunto
      from Hanwei made out of 1095 steel.

    • @thesamuraimonkey42
      @thesamuraimonkey42  3 года назад

Also why was it only until 1935 that the government started producing katanas for officers? We know that katanas have been in Japans history for centuries, so why 1935-1937?

    To be honest, these WW2 era swords are of a horrible quality with the cheapest steel available to the Japanese troops at the time. So even as a present they are rather poor.

      I would disagree, these are very well made. Of course thr quality drops after producing and end of the war. You should check the originality of the sword

      @@thesamuraimonkey42 Its not bad, but they were made from cheap industrial metal, even during the best years. Only higher ranking officers had real hand-made swords, or reformed-older high quality swords. The cheap metal ones were mass produced for ceremonial purposes, even Kamikaze pilots always had one with them in the plane when they prepared to crush into something. Japan does not consider these cheap metal knock-offs as a real thing, so after WW2 and up to this day they are eradicating these types of swords.

      Yea I’ve got an officers Katana made in 1943 It’s signed and I’ve got paperwork on it. It’s absolutely in mint new condition and the quality is very different from the NCO unsigned mass produced Katana. The prices also reflect the difference.

      @@craigthescott5074 Yep, the ones that were signed were legit made by hand for those men, or the older blades that were reformed. I was specifically talking about the industrial streel mass-produced ones.
