- One of the most beautiful destinations on the west coast of Italy, 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐞 is a picturesque town famed for its narrow medieval streets dotted with brightly colored houses. This walking tour takes you to some of the finest sites in Portovenere and allows you to explore this Italian Riviera town from a different perspective.
𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐞 is often referred to as the "sixth" town of the more popular 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞.
It is usually less crowded than the nearby villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, which makes it the perfect choice for those who want to experience a Cinque Terre-like town and enjoy a memorable day trip in the region of 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚.

Thank you very much for this walk, which inspired me greatly. Today I have realised my dream, I am in the region and I have walked the same path in Portovenere. It is absolutely awesome, the views are stunning, the nature is fantastic. Highly recommended for everybody's list of tourist destinations! I was born and spent my childhood in a town just north of La Spezia, which is right next door to Portovenere. All my relatives have their wedding photos taken at the church of San Pietro right on the hill above. So homesick.

@@Voyatours Yes, there is an extraordinarily beautiful one, an alpine lake of glacial origin but with a mediterranean climate, overhanging villages and dizzying views. It is Lake Garda, it has the breath of a small sea, pleasantly squeezed between the plains and the mountains. The Lake Garda has such a variety of natural landscapes that only a complete tour of the lake allows you to appreciate them all. The southern locations are reminiscent of the islands of the south while in the north high peaks surround the lake making it look like a fjord.

Isn't there an ancient little cemetery somewhere in the vicinity of the Doria castle? I remember walking around in it when I was there some 25 years ago. Surely it's still there and worth a look? Maybe next time? Anyway, many thanks for this wonderful virtual trip down memory lane. Back then the Hotel Paradiso was affordable and very well managed. I would go out of my way to stay there again should I be so lucky as to get to visit Italy again. Ancora una volta, grazie mille!

Far north shore: Riva del Garda has in every era been one of the major meeting points between the world north of the Alps and the Mediterranean. Excellent base for staying, for experiencing the lake, for exploring the surrounding mountains. Absolutely not to be missed is a visit to the magnificent Varone Waterfall, which in 20,000 years has dug a very deep cave inside a mountain.
Western shore: Limone del Garda, a splendid small town, starting point to admire the overhanging cliffs of Tremosine, Campione, Montecastello (Tignale).
South shore: Sirmione located on a peninsula, thermal town, place sung by Catullus, where there are immense ruins of a Roman villa. There is also a spectacular Scaligera fortress surrounded by water.
Eastern shore: Malcesine whose castle was described by Goethe and a starting point to go up to Monte Baldo (1900 m) by a rotating cableway, unique opportunity to discover the beauty of Monte Baldo and to admire the entire lake from above.
Raffaele this is exactly what we were looking for! We will carefully review your top list on Lake Garda as it looks great.

You're right Alexander, it's quite difficult to handle this format without proper equipment.
My husband and I went to.protovenere in 1971. Looks much more developed and commercialize today. We bought a sandwich and drinks and sat in the back of the bar. I was excused as being there as I was American woman. Would not have been tolerated as an Italian. It is a wonderful town but visit the cemetary and the old castle.
Delfo what a beautiful story! So many years have passed since 1971! 😉 Today Portovenere welcomes tourists from all over the world and eating a sandwich is more than tolerated, of course 😄 We hope we've been able to bring back good memories about this town nestled in the Mediterranean.

We highly recommend you to visiting the Cinque Terre coastline with its 5 towns, Lerici, Portofino, and (of course) Portovenere! 😄 Our viewers also suggest visiting the little towns of Tellaro, Camogli and Varigotti. From portovenere to that nearest town I can go easily by bus or train within very short time like 40 minutes or 1,2 hour .. please suggest only one town .So that I can stay 2 night in portovenere and one night on your recommendate town and that town should be close to portovenere hope you understand,as I can't walk much and can't climb hill much so vernazza,marola are not good option .Is it possible to reach monterosso beach by train / bus from portovenere ,and after spending couple of hours we can catch the train from monterosso for returning Rome ,but I can't skip portovenere from my travel plan , it's a must ..
Yes, it's quite good. You can take the bus from Portovenere to La spezia and vice-versa. Bus from La Spazia depart and return every 10-30 minutes, and as you said the duration is about 30 minutes.
Once you arrive at La spezia station you can go anywhere you want in a matter of minutes!
Your travel plan sounds great to us:
Portovenere -> La Spezia (bus) -> Monterosso (train)
Monterosso station -> Rome station
YOU MUST ! GO SEE PALMARIA AND TINO ISLANDS... THE BOAT FOR HIRE WILL DO IT 30€ 30 minutes of you can hire them for transporting anywhere REGULAR, 15 minutes apart boat transport from Portovenere dock and the main boat landing ( next to a fabolously good mini restaurant ) are like €10 ... or DO IT LIKE A PRO WOULD DO... SWIM !!! ( BYRON USED TO DO IT ..)

@@Voyatours yes they are magnificent both as naturalistic havens for plants and animals as well as truly spectacular sightseeing and archaeology BUT next time do carry hiking gear and water as it truly is wild and steep ( but at least NO wild boars ! )
