- About 25 years ago, when I was 18, I had an older girlfriend, she a much wiser 27. She was nice,... cool. She had a little flat right in the centre of town. Sometimes in the middle of the night we would sit at her window, smoking, looking down at the busy streets below. She had a cassette tape of Julie London's "Julie is her Name" album and we'd listen to it on rotation. This tune of course is a classic, but let's not forget the haunting "Laura", "Gone with the Wind" and "It never entered my mind" I was playing the guitar back then, just learning some jazz. I was blown away by the lovely guitar of Barney Kessell. That music will stay with me for the rest of my life, the girlfriend, sadly did not :-)
i love how you never go overboard & have the perfect amount of everything in your performance.

Those kind never do, but it can make some nice memories like these. Nice story, beautiful tunes.
Its made me cry a river - so many memories. I love it so beautifully played
Reminds me of Paris :) ,honestly some of the best smooth jazz I've ever heard.
Good sound and music.
I'm in sixth grade band I play the ten nor sax
fucking liar
Man I can't stop listen to you over and over again!!! I love your version!!! It's fantastic!!
I was sad i few hours ago and by listening this music makes me feel the real sense of life and happy again.
Rozumiem Cię🙂
Matthew, that was beautiful. You weren't just playing the notes, you were interpreting the Lyrics. You got the emotion of that 'lost love but I'll get over it' song. Great Tnr technique, & your sensitive use of vibrato really sold it. It is a lesson on how to play a Ballad. Very enjoyable. Thanks.
The story of your much older GF.. sure wonderful memories
Some say RUclips is bad for the music industry , but without it I would have never found one of my new favorite tenor sax players. I can't think of a better player for slow jazz songs.
I've been playing this song for a few years now, still enjoy it like the first time, cup of dark strong coffee and a damn relaxing cigarrete. Cheers.
Wiem o czym mówisz😊
Fantastic to rehear this number. Matthew is a star.
Just gorgeous... no doubt like that woman so many years ago. Cheer up, though. Today she'd still be almost 10 years older than you are and none of us is getting any younger! Joking aside, there is a depth of feeling to your playing on this one that is rare and wonderful and very real, borne, no doubt by the passion and, perhaps, melancholy you feel thinking back to those fine days at that window. One of my favorites of yours, so far, for sure!
PS: New specs! They look great!
Bit the bullit last week Selmer Tenor 1964 mk6 no damage stayed in the family this is the tune for me excellent!
Quite a few comments to talk about hear. I listen to Mathew a lot having bought
myself a tenor last Xmas after 65 years playing the drums ! No good listening to
Golson Coltrane etc (other than for enjoyment) guys like Mathew inspire me to
emulate them rather than hoping for the impossible.(A) its never to late to start
Im 80 (B) it neednt be expensive I bought my sax on Ebay for £150 (C) look and
listen to yourself (bathroom mirror is great accoustics are good there too) Practice
long notes to develop your tone. Dont worry about cheeks in or out etc being
comfortable blowing is more important to start with the rest will develop as you
progress.
Right on, just bought my first Conn around 1928. getting a good education hear.
Michael McDermott You guys might look up the difference between 'hear' and 'here'. Yes, I'm a grammar Nazi.
Just bought my first sax (Baritone, for 6oth birthday) ....and a Tenor sax a few weeks later, love playing both. Long way to go but it is fun! Lovin the tone of this Mathew.
Great comment talbot
Nice. Keep it up. I am 70 years old. I just started to practice. I listen to you often,
Magical moments. Love every nuanced highs and lows
Wooonderfullll. Beautiful your play sax. I love it very much your work musical. Amazing💎🎶💎💎🌹🎶💎
Now that's what I call a great tenor sound, very full 👌
Awh! Those fond found memories... The Sultry Ms Julie... 1:30 / 2:a.m. and didn't want to fold up shop, as yet anyway... ha! Thanks Matt - Your playing is "top shelf"... Your stimulating memories - well - "out of this world"... Thanks \o/
You're honestly amazing, I sincerely wish you the best on whatever remarkable journey's life takes you on. Best of luck and stick with it, you're doing amazing.
I have played the guitar for 35 years, still do. 3 years ago i started on the sax, first on the alto, for the last 2 years on the tenor. Damn hard instrument. I'm not giving up though! Nice playing and great sound!
I've been playing a clarinet since 6th grade even though all I ever wanted was to play the saxophone. I'm a junior in high school and the urge of wanting to play has come back. I've been contemplating on whether I should switch or not since I only had 2 years left but listening to you play made me decide to switch, thank you!
Music is a lifelong hobby. Plus if you know how to play clarinet, saxophone will be really easy for you to pick up. The fingers are pretty much the same. I would say go for a try. Never know unless you try.
Its been 2 years already so whats up
Yeah what’s up? I play clarinet and sax both are fun
Don’t contemplate, just do it. It’s loads of fun
vera yeah what happened ?
Great stuff.
Wonderful Tone
Keep it up..
Grazie
Interesting story. It's amazing how a song mark our lives, we spend situations where the music is more than a striking image.
This song is beautiful, I like very much, great interpretation, getting better and the sound of Reference forget it.

Wow. Thank you. I've been scouring RUclips, trying to find people with the touch and tone and emotion that first hooked me on the sax three decades ago. Now I've found it. My alto and me don't sound anything like you, but listening to you has given the buzz to pick it up again.
Fantastic, lovely deep mellow notes thanks for sharing
You have an impeccable sense of timing! + & soul! Thanks 4 sharing
I just love this. I've been listening to this for over a year now and just wanted you to know this is my favourite version on saxophone. Of course I really go for Julie London's vocal version.

Hello Mr. Stone ,just listened to it .Just great just like all your other tracks .I play it too but on my leaky 51 years old Hohner President now with a damaged neck after a bad fall. six months ago .Cant subtone like you do.Thanks for all your music.Hope I could meet you one day.
Aubra Graves passed recently. I heard someone play this song as a kind of tribute to Aubra today... I said what I said commenting his playing, which was not bad and at the same time it was obvious from the start that this song is too intimate to be able to reach beyond one's failures...hesitation who to love and who not too... and ... YT just listed your video. Analogue man vs second hand one. Fullfiled and satisfied listening to someone's story... a story of your life in that song. Bravissimo 😄
shephronqpan thank you so much, kind words! Sorry to here about Aubra, he had a lovely tone and a beautiful melodic way of playing
great and soft dynamic sound
