During this performance, some reactors wondered out loud if Diana Ankudinova was using Auto-Tune during this performance? The general consensus of many more vocal professionals, and recording sound engineers not just reactors are saying no; there is no auto-tune being used. What many may not know is Diana Ankudinova has mastered, and is using a vocal technique known as polyphonic singing which is hard to learn and do, and is an extraordinary accomplishment for someone this young. A singer who has mastered the polyphonic singing technique can create one, and sometimes two, different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones that can make it sound like more than one voice singing which many times can result in individuals mistakenly believing she is using Auto-Tune or some other form of electronic voice manipulation or is using pitch correction software when she is not. This performance was her second appearance on a talent show for disadvantaged teens called You Are Super which concluded with her winning the competition after giving this mesmerizing performance. In 2018, when Diana was 14 years old, and first competed in the You Are Super competition singing the Russian folk song, Rechenka in her native Russian language. It was during this 2018 performance of Rechenka that many voice professionals started paying close attention to Diana because she was showing low, rich, deep, and resonant sounds, and was displaying all the hallmarks of becoming a true contralto voice type, plus the musicality and stage presence displayed was well beyond her 14 years. It was no surprise when Diana was declared the 2018 “You Are Super” winner, but no one was prepared for the following year in 2019 for the full contralto sound she exhibited during her performance of Wicked Game that won her the 2019 “You Are Super” competition!
