    Cracking episode again Sam. Mission impossible here perhaps. Some time could have been saved by having some soapy water in a lunchbox on the loft and forgo putting the motors back into the box, but still an unfeasible job possibly. Oh well, you could always restore it properly in your own time. A 1966 loco just is too precious to be left as scrap, we thought. Those are so simply brought back to life justly 🙂

    Hi Sam. I noticed at the beginning when you tried to test-run the loco, that the two metal rods (rusty, of course) on the Fireman’s side that come out of the cylinder casting were not parallel; this would cause the sliding piece to which the connecting rods were attached, to bind up on the end farthest from the cylinder. Even a good, brand new motor wouldn’t be able to overcome that sort of binding! Also, save that worm gear before scrapping the loco, and put it on one of the good motors you have (or a nice coreless motor with a matching shaft diameter) so you’ll have one ready to go next time! 😅 The binding is probably what killed the motor the first time; that’s why the commutator was all gunked up with carbon and oxidation - it got too hot. The weak magnets didn’t help the cause, either. 😢 I’d feed the motor, rusty side rods, rusty couplings, and the engine body shell to the evil scrap man, and keep the frame, wheels, pickups, and all of the tender. You can clean up the wheels later and use them in another 3D-printed (Hall class) loco project! 😀💙

    I'm not great at recognising model locomotive designs or names, but I'm pretty sure I had one of these Hall locos when I was a kid. The tenders look identical and was what gave it away. It belonged to my grandfather, I think the motor died around 1999, and since my dad didn't know much about servicing engines, we sorta just left it to gather dust. I do remember he removed the bogey wheels for some reason, but I'm pretty sure it had a dead motor...

    I feel bad for the so called "scrap man" everybody thinks he's evil but I think he's really just misunderstood. First of all that nickname is imposing, like his name is Jerry, c'mon you can at least let him have his dignity while he's being held against his will forever confined to a cabinet in your basement, made to be a puppet in your sick games for your amusement, profiting off his suffering. Sustained on nothing but the occasional broken model train, look at the guy he's clearly malnourished, he's barely able to utter out a few words before the door slams in his face, and those are the worst bloodshot eyes I've ever seen they're practically glowing might wanna get that checked out my G. I am utterly uphauled at the behavior displayed in this show, a perfect example of a cruel narcissist taking advantage and profiting off of the lesser man, whilst mascaraing as but an innocent model train restorationist. This behavior is downright unacceptable and I will be starting a campaign to free the scrapman from your captivity and thus the deplorable conditions he is being held in. I will see you my friend, in court! (THIS IS A JOKE) Please no hard feelings, I didn’t mean anything I said. I really like your videos.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 месяцев назад +3

      Definitely don't feel bad for the Scrapman - if he had his body, he'd still be destroying real steam locomotives. His occasional feeding is an act of mercy on my part, and I'm doing the whole world of railways a favour by keeping him in the cupboard. I take his custody very seriously, as I've seen first hand what he's capable of. Please reconsider the court case, you really don't know what you're saying!

    Such a shame it didn't make it. I recently got my hands on a Lord Westwood Hall and I restored it to working condition. She's as lively as ever. From my memory I never had a Tri-ang loco go out as you said, they were built to last. I do have a hint though. Recently I saw an American youtuber restore HO trains from being dead to working again. He used a fibreglass pencil to clean the commutator. I wondered if it works and bought one. I tried it on the Hall and it cleaned a very dirty commutator within 30 seconds. Prior to that I used cotton buds which worked well, but took a lot longer. Maybe if you consider doing another season of salvage and scrap you could get one to save a lot of time cleaning the commutator? It worked wonders for me and all my locos I cleaned with it run a lot better than those I used the cotton buds. Also, that last locomotive is gonna get interesting. It's a Lifelike Tea Kettle and it's an absolute dog most of the times. I was very lucky to buy one for 25£ in mint condition. Hopefully the last member of the season makes it out alive. Great video, eventhough we had one casualty.

    Would the motor re-magnetisation be able to cause this or is that something to do with the other motor related fault?
    For once the challenge was greater, establishing proper risk now, good. Sad that the specific model died but at least now i feel more tension when time happens to run close.

    The reiable X04 motors that I used in my scratch-built locos from 1966 onwards have all had to go in favour of modern can motors. On a modern controller the motors cut out every 30 seconds. Only an old analog controller.would work.

  • @davidballoid2118
    @davidballoid2118 9 месяцев назад +1

    I'm surprised you didn't submerge the connecting rods and valve gear into vinegar solution and use a positive and negative charge along with an anode rod overnight to loosen that rust it would have wiped right off. I couldn't tell the condition of the motor if it had rust or not but if it did, you could have soaked in the same vinegar solution as well overnight then magnetized the magnet and reassembled it the following day. Oh well you can't win them all in 20 minutes. 😉

    While the Tri-ang Hornby Hall is indeed a 1960s design, your particular model is rather later. The Great Western livery version (they were previously BR), with chromed wheel tyres were introduced in the early 1970s by Hornby Railways (post Tri-ang Hornby), and these had a very glossy finish. The 'satin' finish, and plastic worm wheels as on your model was introduced in the late 1970s and continued as such into the 1980s.

    As long as the worm has the same gear pattern, the brass ones will work in place of a nylon one. I have a feeling they were the same gearing. It's a shame you didn't get this going. I think if you'd had time to remagnetise it, the motor would have come back to life properly.

      the brass gear is a faster gearing, hence the earlier tri-ang locos running faster. This was a 1977-78 ish loco with coarser pitch gears which run the loco slower, to nearer scale speed. The brass gears work with brass / black plastic cogs, the black plastic worm with the coarse grey gear.

    Shame - given 30 mins you may well have fixed it. I had a Hall from the early 70s. It had that mechanical chuff-chuff sound box in the tender and and a heated oil reservoir mounted in front of the motor with a piston that sent puffs of smoke out the funnel as it moved - it was primitive but fun!

    Hi Sam, I just love your videos BUT as a 79 year old can I just say that I think you are going about things the wrong way with your salvage and scrap. Firstly get the chassis working properly first, then spend time on the body and tender afterwards, anything else is just a waste of time as proven by your results on this model. Eg cleaning the Body, Tender and Name plates. As for a time limit on a repair perhaps you can inform me as to the reason why? My view is it takes as long as necessary if you really want to repair the Locomotive. I have been into model railways since I was a kid. Regards from Ron 🚂👍🚂

    I think more time should have been spent getting the motor magnetised and ran in without any load rather than messing with cosmetics, but never mind a good effort was done!

      @@SamsTrainsI honestly wonder, if the engines are sent to the Scrap Man, does that mean that you repair them offscreen, without the time limit, so that the can work again? Or is that it for them, and there's no repairing them?
