I’ve never been able to articulate it. But when my mum asks me why I love Jiu Jitsu so much, the best way I could explain it is that it’s just 2 hours of my day when nothing else matters, no stress from life, work or relationships… I just get zoned into my next move and my opponents next move. It’s a beautiful thing, fighting for your life.
The forced mindfulness has been big for me. At class, there is only time to think of bjj. No work issues, no home issues. I might pick my worries right back up after class but the hour+ away from them gave my mind a break, and the problems themselves always seem smaller and more manageable after rolling.
Jiu-jitsu is literally the only thing I look forward to. I love being there in the room working out problems and trying new things. I hate missing class. I’m a 4 stripe purple belt and it drives me crazy when guys in my position say they “lack motivation” like what!?
As a fairly new White Belt, coming from numerous adrenaline fuelled sports the mindfulness and going into theat flow state is the reason I am enjoying BJJ. I can connect the flow mindset I would get into from rugby and MTBing to BJJ to help roll better and can feel myself perform slow and robotic when I don't get into that state. I love the gentle punishment of it. Compared to other sports (obviously partner dependant)

All I know is after 5 mins of bottom side control from the 49yr old purple belt with monkey strength, life doesn't seem so difficult.
