    This match is the turning poing of sri lanka cricket. This is where SL start to believe themselves and start attacking in power plays.

      Yeah then after that in the Benson and Hedges tri series that was "IN Australia" in the group stages SL came without Murali and defeated Aus 2-1 in group stages matches in australia and aussies were really tough that time with warne,mcgrath,waugh,ponting even even tho Aus won the 2 finals in the end it was still 3-2 in Australia without Murali which really gave SL confidence cuz and then they were tougher than ever when Murali came back not only defeated Aussies in the WC Final and won the WC also met the Aussies again in a final in another series and then defeated them again and also defeated India like 7 times in a row that is probably the strongest side SL ever had

    Original Lankan team was born after this confident chase n then they became chase masters and won most matches while chasing including WC96.

    If ever there was a rare gem of an upload, then this is it. I haven't watched it yet as I post the comment but I think Hashan Tillekaratne starts vomiting towards the end of the game, and gets caught at mid-wicket while trying to hoick one off a fast bowler. Let me watch the video to validate my memory!

    I think lara played a blinder. But in those days scoring 300 was a huge thing and 333 was definitely a huge score. Lanka put their guts out. It was incredible. Sign of things to come for them though.

    I remember this game well. Lara scored 169 runs. But he was dropped by Kaluwitharana at the begining of his innings and was a costly miss. There was another instance where Sangakkara missed a simple stumping chance against Andrew Symmonds when Austrailia was struggling during 2003 world cup. He scored more than 90 rund and took the world cup away from Sri Lanka

    • @sachintendulkar3556

      Lara made 169 of 127 balls and yeah andrew Symonds made 93-120 balls. Sri Lanka were winning that match, Gilchrist walked, ponting, martyn hayden all amde low scores but that was the Aussie team. if one guy plays poor then someone else will stand up.
      Good memory

    Lara scored 169 here, and could have well broken the then existed world record score of 189 for ODIs held by ViV Richards, but he was bowled by Kumar Darmasena with quite a few overs still to go. Chanderpaul provided them with a good finish too, hitting two consecutive sixes off the final 2 deliveries of their innings, hence they reached 333 quite comfortably. Sunil Gavaskar in the commentary panel mentioned at the end of WI innings that Sri Lanka simply had no chance, the most would have agreed that too. Still the Sri Lankan batsmen seemed to have had determined to go for it, 100 run mark was reached in 10 overs. Kaluwitharana had been promoted up the order from No. 07 to No. 04, may be for the first time in the national team, had made a quickfire 30+ innings, and set the tempo. Sri Lanka lost their way somewhat in the middle, still the partnership between Hashan Thillekerathne and Chandika Hathurusinghe (batted at no. 07 in this game) brought Sri Lanka back into the contention. Then that partnership was broken, then came Dharmasena who too contributed decently before being runout. So, in the end, Hashan Thilekarathne had been left with only the tailenders to provide the finish. He almost did it quite single-handedly scoring his second ODI hundred (his first one too had come against WI during the Hero cup held in India in '94), only to be caught at the boundary with only 4 runs to get. It had been a proper dismissal/catch, though there had been some confusion whether it had been a catch or a six due to the (limited) angle of television coverage. The West Indian attack for the series didn't include the fearsome duo of Ambrose and Walsh, Ian Bishop had returned to the side instead with several new comers like Ottis Gibson, Hamish Anthony, etc.. Though Sri Lanka lost the game by 4 runs, that chase still looked remarkable and provided the base for them to win the title by defeating the same team WI in the finals, which had been Sri Lanka's only second title win involving 3 or more teams and the first of such held outside of South Asia (the first being the victory of Asia Cup in mid 80s - '86/87). While this had been going on in Sharjah, a confrontation had been going on back in Sri Lanka near Colombo during day time on the same day, and certain schools had been closed somewhat earlier too (, so we reached our homes somewhat earlier to watch this game when WIs were batting with Lara going great guns...). A few LTTE cadres/terrorists had entered the Oil Refinery at Sapugaskanda, and there that been the confrontations/firing taken place between them and the Sri Lanka forces.... When we look back into our past, these had been the bittersweet memories we used to have as youngsters/teenagers here in Sri Lanka, these videos still send us back in that memory lane even after more than 25 years from those incidents....

    could have been the then record highest chase in ODIs, so near yet not. Can someone tell me if Hashan Tilakaratne vomited during his innings due to heat and dehydration? I heard he completed his innings with an upset stomach through the middle of his innings.

    • @anuradhaabhayawardhana3860
      @anuradhaabhayawardhana3860 4 года назад

      True. He vomited during his inning. And I reckon the last catch was a six as the technical system is not that developed those days. Anyway it was a gem of a match. The game was on for both sides till the end of the game. And loving memories of Mahanama, Hathurusinghe and Hashan. Thanks for the T20 matches it could hardly possible to see a game like this nowadays...
