So I got my uro about a week ago and you and the bloke selling me it has very conflicting ideas. Here is a list of everything he told me: 35 for basking spot 1-2 hides a water bowl that is larger than my uro Feed it rocket Tank thankfully is 120 Also he said my substrate made it so I didn’t need to use calcium powder, I threw out the bag and can’t remember what it’s called. Ik this vid has been out for a few months but is would be so amazing if you could help me out. I have a baby south Saharan and hope to have it for a while
For sure basking spot needs to be way hotter. This is extremely common knowledge that every uro keeper knows. Water bowl does not need to be that big but I guess it doesn’t hurt tbh so you can if ya want. By using substrate and not needing calcium powder are you using calcium sand? Definitely don’t use that as it’s horrible substrate. Basking spot needs to be around 48c-54c. Air temp can be 35c on the hit side. But the basking spot for sure needs to be hotter.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse thanks so much I have upped basking spot but should I do it slowly so it does not create a drastic change and affect it? It’s not calcium sand but I can see if I can figure it out. Thanks for the advice
@@K1TKAT. happy to help! No just go straight to the hot basking spot these guys love it. Mine like it at around 48c more than 54c. Some even like it around 47c-48c. Just depends on the lizard
Hey great video! I'm wondering were you got your Uromastyxs? im really thunking about getting one but can not get them localy. Have you ever purchased from backwaterreptiles before the claim that they get there animals through the general public. And are legal the way they do it. But then they say this on the page for the Uromastyxs (Here are our available uromastyx for sale, both captive bred and imported. These fascinating lizards are also called spiny-tailed agamas, dabb lizards, and mastigures. The various species are primarily herbivorous, and all are sun-loving. When you buy a uromastyx from us, you can rest easy knowing you are guaranteed the lizard will arrive alive and in great condition.) So im not sure weather i sgould purches from thm or not. They also seem to have really good reviews. Do you have any recommendations on where to get Uromastyxs from?
I got mine from expos. I will say I have heard tons of people get there’s from them in horrible condition. They used to be called black water reptiles but changed there name due to so many negative reviews. Look on morph market as well. Tons of breeders breeding high quality uromastyx.
I use some 1x2s and plywood. The ply wood is 23/32 inch I do have some guides on my bearded dragon enclosures which are very similar but I am working on a uromastyx video guide on how I built these
Appreciate ya. I feed him a huge variety of greens like arugula, mustard greens, turnip greens, romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, spring mix with spinach removed, Timothy hay, dandelions I find in my yard. Butternut squash. Much much more but this is what I can name off the top off my head
I have a 40 gallon ExoTerra... How long can a baby/juvenile live happily in that size enclosure, and how would you recommend going about lighting (UVB and basking), since they both have to be outside the tank? I have ideas, but was curious to hear your advice. Thanks.
If it was new born it could be in it for around 6 months but they grow fast. And they love to run around like crazy. For on top of a 18 inch tall enclosure like a exo terra a 14% will do good. May have to use two 75 watt bulbs. Or a 100 watt bulb and a 50 watt to achieve desired temps. It’s really hard to do in a 40 gallon
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse Thanks... I figured. Got the 40 gallon Exo Terra during a sale, with plans on putting a Hognose snake in it, but me and my son saw a Uromastyx at an expo and BAM!!! We didn't get one because I told him I needed to do research and would prefer to have the enclosure all ready and set up first... Thankfully "Analysis Paralysis" is my thing!!
Can you help me I’m confused What basking bulb do you use? I have 100w Arcadia is that all I need for 4’ x18”x18”? What led light strip can I use that I can find local?
Also get the uvb as well. You can find an Arcadia 12% at petsmart. The led strip I got at Walmart. If you can’t get the right basking temps you might need two heat lamps as well
Mines never drank water either and he doesn’t like many greens. Hes very picky. But he’s also never had a full shed and when he does shed it’s only in some spots like arms tail and stomach, but he’s got shedding stuck on his right eye, what should I do? He’s tried itching it off and rubbing on his rock and log..
@@hirobarcodefabia766 100% uvb is only from the sun so there is no uvb at night. So you are mimicking natures light more naturally by turning everything off
I don’t use probe dimmers I just dial it in just right. However a dimmer I know a lot of people use is herpstat or the repti zoo dimmer. I work from home so I don’t have to worry like most people do. How I would place it is in on the outside of the rock or even tape it down onto the rock. So the rock heats up if you taped it near the edge of the rock or slate it’ll transfer that heat and let the thermostat know it’s too hot
I got one a week ago and it is a red one. It is around 14 inches and everything looked good and pointed at captive bred with the whole tail thing and he is eating out of my hand already. But, he does have a couple scars on his head that I hadn't noticed at the expo that I got him at, and he is a rescue. I hadn't asked if it was wild caught because he looked really well. Would do you think?
He sounds like he is a wild caught most captive breds rarely have scars but as long as his tail fat is good and he’s eating then he’s doing great will be a great friend for a long time
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse I've never had one before. Just dragons. I've never even come across one at a show in real life. The only thing that holds me back is that uro's are more prone to kind of hide. I like dragons who roam.

Arids only sells ornates, tikis geckos sells some ornates and Egyptians as well make sure it’s CBB as they sell wild caught as well. Morph market is a place you can find some as well
I just got my uromastyx two days ago and he comes out to bask but sleeps in his hide curled up all day. He’s also a baby. Is he just scared and is still getting acclimated or is something wrong. He is eating
As long as he is eating that’s a really good sign. He may just be getting acclimated. If he stops eating is when you should worry but as long as he eats nothing to worry about.
hey sorry if someone has asked this already. but i’ve had a uromastyx for a while now and it’s been living with millet substrate for as long as i’ve had it, cuz that’s how i was sold it. but i’m wondering how i could switch the substrate to a gravel type like you described. the people i got it from said it’s hard to switch off millet cuz they can eat the dirt gravel or whatever and it can clog there organs. so i’m a little worried to swap over to a rock type substrate just in case that happens. do you have any tips to help with that.
No they live on it in the wild they are perfectly fine with rocky type substrate. Also the millet thing is more sanitary issue as well. Plus since it’s like quicksand for em can stress them out.
Captive bred are definitely increasing but wild caughts are most of the market for now. I think the future is great been seeing tons more start breeding uromastyx. For United States at least
Take it out. They do poop a lot mine poop like twice a day. But yeah I just get a paper towel and grab it with all the surrounding substrate the poop touches and throw it away.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse I don't know if my Yellow Uro is wild-caught or captive-bred, I got him a couple months ago from his previous owner. He appears to have gotten some poop stuck in his tail but fiercely resists being handled so I can clean his tail with a q-tip. Do you have any suggestions? thanks!
@@Nicklemeister he most likely is wild caught but he seems healthy if he’s been with you for months. You can use a q tip for sure. I use a tooth brush lol.
That’s not really true. It all depends on the species. U. Geyri are mostly imported because the countries they’re native to don’t have a lot of regulations. Other species (like my Moroccan for example) aren’t allowed to be exported so breeders are able to make money without having to compete with cheap (and often sickly and parasite infested) imports. Dragontopia in North Carolina and Arids Only in Colorado are two great breeders in the US.
@@MarioLuigi-vb3rp are you sure about that? Are you in Uk? If so that explains why. In the United States every one you see in a shop is most likely wild caught even if they claim it’s captive bred they are usually lying unless they have photo proof. I live in San Antonio and learning as much as I can about Beardies and now Uros before I offer myself to be adopted by one. I grew up in the Florida Keys with wild/tame Igies and King snakes. My questions to you is this: If I use local ground elements (rock/sand/gavel), how would I sanitize/sterilize it? I believe in well ventilated environments. How "clever" are each as far as being escape artists (screen gauge)?
I use rocks from outside and don’t sanitize it and haven’t had issues however you can put it in a deep pan and bake it at 250f for an hour and that will sanitize it
Could u do a small video on tail shed what it should look like maybe?
great video! Where do you recommend buying a uro? Years ago I purchased from Deer Fern Farms but he is no longer doing that.
Thank you! You can look on morph market on Facebook there is a group called uromastyx club and they also have breeders in it. There’s breeders for every species and it’s getting close to baby season so soon you should be able to purchase many different types of uros!
I have a breeder friend who has quite a few Ornates for sale. Let me know if you’d like his info!
I love these. I dont want to own one but i wish i had a friend who owned one so i could visit it lol. Theyre my favorites because their eyes look intelligent to me.
Do you need to rinse the play sand? Im trying to set up an enclosure and the humidity is way too high I used play sand which we rinsed and reptisoil but i cant get the humidity down to a reasonable level so im not sure if i should start over or try and dry it out
This is a great video! Do you sell captive bred uromastyx? I don't want a wild caught one :(
thank you! I wont have any until next year and only Geyris and ornates. however if you join the uromastyx club on facebook breeders are just now getting eggs so you should be able to grab one around july or august
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse oh that's amazing, thank you!
where can i adopt one instead of buying from a store or breeder if I live in Calgary, Canada? I searched online for shelters and rescues in the city for birds and reptiles but most i have seen don't have any
Would u recommend setting up an arid bio-active terrarium for Uros?
Yes I have a couple uro enclosures that are bioactive
So I got my uro about a week ago and you and the bloke selling me it has very conflicting ideas. Here is a list of everything he told me:
35 for basking spot
1-2 hides a water bowl that is larger than my uro
Feed it rocket
Tank thankfully is 120
Also he said my substrate made it so I didn’t need to use calcium powder, I threw out the bag and can’t remember what it’s called.
@@ChiefSweetsUniversethe substrate is a tortoise Mediterranean mix
It’s seems very similar to top soil but will small rocks
@@K1TKAT. happy to help!
Is it okay to feed a Uromastyx dandelions if my neighbors spray their lawn with pesticides?
No don’t feed them that.
Would you put pesticides in your body?
what do you use to build your enclosures? I would like to build my own so i can customize it to my liking but don’t know where to start
I use some 1x2s and plywood. The ply wood is 23/32 inch I do have some guides on my bearded dragon enclosures which are very similar but I am working on a uromastyx video guide on how I built these
I have a question what is a good size enclosure to start a baby uro in?
I start all my babies in 4ftx2ftx2ft tanks. www.diycages.com/
Not bad. Good info, nice work.
Thank you very much Nicholas!
Your the best on here on uros my man thanks ..what do you feed your egyptian
Appreciate ya. I feed him a huge variety of greens like arugula, mustard greens, turnip greens, romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, spring mix with spinach removed, Timothy hay, dandelions I find in my yard. Butternut squash. Much much more but this is what I can name off the top off my head
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse thankyou sir
There's a Saharan Uromastyx at my local Petco. It's hotspot is 80°F😢 I want to rescue it but it's listed at 400 bux.
you can tell the workers the correct temperature,
I have a 40 gallon ExoTerra...
@@Kill_OrB_eats I know the exact feeling! Now I will say you can’t pass up a exo terra 40 gallon on sale you just gotta get it 😂
Can you help me I’m confused
What basking bulb do you use?
I have 100w Arcadia is that all I need for 4’ x18”x18”?
What led light strip can I use that I can find local?
Also get the uvb as well. You can find an Arcadia 12% at petsmart. The led strip I got at Walmart. If you can’t get the right basking temps you might need two heat lamps as well
My uromastyx was an escape artist lol
Haha I feel that
Can you send me all the link of the led and the light bulb?
Mines never drank water either and he doesn’t like many greens. Hes very picky. But he’s also never had a full shed and when he does shed it’s only in some spots like arms tail and stomach, but he’s got shedding stuck on his right eye, what should I do? He’s tried itching it off and rubbing on his rock and log..
She’ll definitely figure out how to shed it off. You don’t have to do anything. It always eventually comes off.
Chief!! Is it safe to turn off the uvb/basking light at night time? Like 10 hours.
Yes I turn all my lights off including the uvb at night.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse even in winter season? Is it ok?
@@hirobarcodefabia766 100% uvb is only from the sun so there is no uvb at night. So you are mimicking natures light more naturally by turning everything off
@@ChiefSweetsUniverseI may have missed it, but when you turn off the lights at night, do you turn off the heat rocks as well?
With the dimmers on your heat fixtures, how do you deal with the probe? Where is your probe placed where the Uromastyx do not move it?
I don’t use probe dimmers I just dial it in just right. However a dimmer I know a lot of people use is herpstat or the repti zoo dimmer. I work from home so I don’t have to worry like most people do. How I would place it is in on the outside of the rock or even tape it down onto the rock. So the rock heats up if you taped it near the edge of the rock or slate it’ll transfer that heat and let the thermostat know it’s too hot
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse I found the dimmers, Thank you

I got one a week ago and it is a red one. It is around 14 inches and everything looked good and pointed at captive bred with the whole tail thing and he is eating out of my hand already. But, he does have a couple scars on his head that I hadn't noticed at the expo that I got him at, and he is a rescue. I hadn't asked if it was wild caught because he looked really well. Would do you think?
He sounds like he is a wild caught most captive breds rarely have scars but as long as his tail fat is good and he’s eating then he’s doing great will be a great friend for a long time
Great. Now Im torn about whether to get a Uro or another dragon LOL.
😂 I know what you mean! I am a fan of uros myself so I say go uro!
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse I've never had one before. Just dragons. I've never even come across one at a show in real life. The only thing that holds me back is that uro's are more prone to kind of hide. I like dragons who roam.
Yeah they are pretty rare. They are also skittish but once you tame them they are very active. Way more active than my dragons 😂 make my dragons look like rocks.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse Hilarious that you used the word rock. I have referred to one of mine as a pet rock sometimes. I told a neighbor if mine ever escaped to be very, very careful if they came across him. Because he might stare them to death.
I have a few dragons for sale if you’re interested 😊…
I have 100 wat in both of my lights and that equals 200 so is 200 degrees okay for my uro
I am very hesitant to choose which reptile is better, can you tell me which one requires less care?
Depends really
Which animals are you looking at
The only reptiles I have cohabbed was when I used to bread leopard geckos the key to doin it us size of enclosure I make all my enclosures and this one was huge I kept 2 females and 1 male they all need there own areas but never put 2 males togather they will kill each other but I never had any problems and they actually thrived and had many many eggs over the time I had looking at getting 1 of these I have wanted for while only thi g I have at moment is hognose snakes that I breed but I do want 1 of these
Exactly my uros I actually have some females housed with males but I know how to sex them. New people I definitely don’t recommend since they usually don’t know much
Sweet. I live in oklahoma. I might use dry clay and gravel
That’s exactly what I use haha. Works amazing
Where would you recommend buying a captive breed uro from?
There are some great breeders in the uromastyx club group on Facebook.
So helpful!!!!
Happy to help
How much should i feed a uromastyx like 3 leaves of lettuce or untill they stop eating
And I feed them everyday right
Wild caught even if you get it from petco? Is anything from petco ever wild caught?
Oh yeah if it’s at petco it’s wildcaught tons of stuff from petco is wildcaught. People buy tarantulas from there and they are pregnant and end up with 500 tarantulas 😂
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse oh dang that’s crazy lol hey thanks for the reply man!
So I just got everything set for a uromastyx and i was wondering if you had any good websites that i could order some from because every pet store near me does not sell any uromastyx.
Arids only sells ornates, tikis geckos sells some ornates and Egyptians as well make sure it’s CBB as they sell wild caught as well. Morph market is a place you can find some as well
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse thank you so much you have been a big help in all of this I really appreciate it

These are great lizards! Definitely recommend buying captive bred. But great great lizards.
How did you make your humid hide?
I do have a video on humid hides
What is a proper size terrarium for a uromastyx?
Most are 4x2x2
Im looking in to getting one. What size should i get for a adult. I find some sources saying a 40 gallon to a 60 gallon.
For a adult 120 gallon is what you need. Go with a DIYcages.com they have. A great one for $300 perfect for uros
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse ok thanks
how often do you clean there enclosure??
Whenever they poop but sometimes they do hide there poop under rocks so once a month I have to lift up all rocks and stuff and look for poop lo
Hey I just got a 4x2x2 tank and I have 100 watt heat lamps but I don't think that they provide enough heat
I don't think it's the lamp I think it's just the distance from the top of the enclosure and the bottom
Should I get a 150 watt or what
Yes this can happen you can use the zoo med 150 watt basking bulb
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse oh ok thank you for letting me know
hey sorry if someone has asked this already. but i’ve had a uromastyx for a while now and it’s been living with millet substrate for as long as i’ve had it, cuz that’s how i was sold it. but i’m wondering how i could switch the substrate to a gravel type like you described. the people i got it from said it’s hard to switch off millet cuz they can eat the dirt gravel or whatever and it can clog there organs. so i’m a little worried to swap over to a rock type substrate just in case that happens. do you have any tips to help with that.
No they live on it in the wild they are perfectly fine with rocky type substrate. Also the millet thing is more sanitary issue as well. Plus since it’s like quicksand for em can stress them out.
thanks for the quick response i really appreciate it love the videos and can’t wait to see more of them on your uromastyxs
@@xcannon1378 oh yeah plan to do about 5 in the coming two weeks. Thank you very much!
very few fun USA are wild caught. Been this way since 2017.
Captive bred are definitely increasing but wild caughts are most of the market for now. I think the future is great been seeing tons more start breeding uromastyx. For United States at least
What do you have in the one set up with what looks like a clay wall?
It’s a custom background I made myself spray from them sanded grout painted with drylock.
Mine lays down half the day then run around the rest of the day is that still healthy
Yeah that sounds like Uromastyx behavior
Can they live with bearded dragons?
They cannot. They actually will get sick if they touch dragons so it’s good to keep them in separate tanks
Can you use aquarium gravel
Yeah you can add sand with it will be nice
Can you recommend shelves for reptile enclosures☻
Yes heavy duty shelving at Home Depot 48x24x72 5 shelf shelving unit
Thank you!
What do you do about poop in the enclosure?
Take it out. They do poop a lot mine poop like twice a day. But yeah I just get a paper towel and grab it with all the surrounding substrate the poop touches and throw it away.
How often do you bathe them?
I only bathe the wild caughts for up to a month. About once a week.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse I don't know if my Yellow Uro is wild-caught or captive-bred, I got him a couple months ago from his previous owner. Whoa! Haha that’s expensive
Why are they mostly wild caught in the USA?, why aren't you buying from breeders, in the UK we buy from breeders.
There are very very few breeders.
You think you could lend me a 4x2x2😭😭
Hahaha. You could build one for cheap.
can they live in a 20 gall tank ?
Noooo. These guys need a 120gallon 4x2x2
Why does it have to be T5?
That’s the newest and best t8s are old school and aren’t as strong as t5s
I want a uromastyx now…
Haha I know what you mean
I’ve seen nothing but captive bred for sale
@@MarioLuigi-vb3rp are you sure about that? Are you in Uk? If so that explains why. In the United States every one you see in a shop is most likely wild caught even if they claim it’s captive bred they are usually lying unless they have photo proof. Sucks that it’s that way but it is. Ask any other uro breeder they will tell you the same.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse I only looked online but the places that sell them online are all captive bred. I live in California btw. I never owned a lizard before but interested
