Cool lesson that brings back a lot of memories. I was walking in Berkeley California with my girlfriend summer 1986 when I heard a howling harmonica and overdriven hollow body sound coming out of some dungeon club, so had to take a look. And lighting it up was Little Charlie Baty, Rick Estrin, and the other Nightcats who were completely unknown to me at the time. I was gobsmacked. The night I saw him, he alternated between a Strat and an absolutely gorgeous ES-150. Here's a video very close to what I saw. ruclips.net/video/RfzMBUCtewE/видео.html

Does your CS Fender Strat have a 7.25 radius neck, and if so, do you need to remove it to adjust the truss rod?

    • @AlexFarranGuitar

It does indeed have a 7.25” radius, and yes, it needs screws loosened and to be tilted back in order to adjust the rod 👍🏻

absolutely the best lesson on the history, theory and practicals of getting that sound and style. As a fairly dedicated but OLD pianist , I commend this to EVERY younger player everywhere ...on ANY instrument at all actually . The lesson is simply perfect and done with a great attitude and no showing of any type of patronising or cool dude or ''teacher '' crap...... ...just the FACTS ! Molto , molto.... MOLTO Bravissimo ! Alex mate, that is fabulous and thanks you so much.

      @@AlexFarranGuitar oh heavens no!
I have a custom shop reissue 57 with a chunky V-neck. It’s a little too relic for me as far as a neck goes but the body looks great. It’s a like almost like gold foil paint over Sunburst heavy and I just think it looks cool as hell but that’s only 50. I have a couple 60s the 68 land out in the 63 land out, which are both awesome. I got a ton of guitars way too many all of them were bought used and I only have one real vintage guitar, which is my dark burst 65 L5 custom with a factory installed gold d’armond pup. it would be the perfect arch top guitar the next a little thin but once I play it for a few minutes, I get over that, but I really don’t pull it out much arch tops kinda give me a backache from reaching over the top of them.

Another Five Star video, Alex! I'm a big fan of jump blues and all the great players of that era. Excellent backing track and your guitar sounds great as well. I love the live studio sound of that era in recording history, as exemplified by all those wonderful King and Federal Records made in their historic Cincinnati studio. It's like you are in the room with them. The list on Wikipedia of all those King records by so many legendary artists like Earl Bostic and Freddie King is just amazing. As far as I'm concerned, I'l take that sound over digital any day! Back in the days when the music came first, not the technology.

Tour is a great metaphor for the extensions and harmonies embedded in the Jump Blues form. Less is more. It's what I listen for in blues guitar, as it feeds into so many other genres of playing, even re-imported into Country Blues (we conveniently forget Robert Johnson had a teacher). There's a lot to listen for here, and a lot to steal.
