  • A quick and fun, Wet into Wet demonstration of a Pond in Mist painting. Easy to follow and learn.
    This wet in to wet demonstration was done in a smaller size, allowing the viewer to get in closer to the painting and better see my techniques. The same techniques I use on all of my large paintings
    My videos are great for beginners and seasoned artist alike. These demos are intended to show my techniques and not a finished work of art.
    Paint: Winsor: Newton Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine, Sepia, Yellow Ochre
    da Vinci: Quinacridone Fuchsia and Phthalo Blue.
    Paper:
    STRATHMORE
    Strathmore 500 series Mixed Media Sketchbook.
    This is a smooth, off white paper made from pure cotton rag.
    Colors appear deep and saturated on this luxurious paper.
    I almost always use 140lb paper
    It is less prone to wrinkle when saturated.
    Brushes: 1/2" and a detail brush.
    I use less expensive brushes when
    painting on location and for my videos
    They hold less paint and are easier to clean. And,
    tend to have stiffer bristles. Good for lifting paint.
    Thank you for Watching!

    Hi Perter. I’m fairly new to painting and I was honestly getting nowhere. My art always looked childish and well, awful to be honest. I’ve only recently discovered you and I can honestly say that my work has come on in leaps and bounds since watching your videos. Thank you so much, I’m now beginning to be proud of my work and loving the end results. Thank you again and again ten fold, your talent is endless. 🙏🤗

    It was startling to me how the painting changed after you added the grass. It had looked very undefined - as you named it, in a mist - and then putting those grasses in - POW! It became three dimensional. I want to try this.

    I just attempted this piece and I'm happy with how it turned out. I didn't have the same colours as I'm a very early-on beginner, but my substitutions turned out okay. Very much looking forward to checking out some of your other videos!

    Thanks Pete. I enjoy your videos so much. I have a small painting from someone else but I want to do it the way you do your grassses. I think this was more helpful to me. I have done other small paintings by you. I'm an absolute beginner. I'm a taking an ink and pen class this semester through my local community college because of you and Chris.

    When I was starting my watercolor journey I would watch your videos religiously. Now that I've grown I find that I am more critical of others work than I used to be. (Trust me, I am much harsher on myself.)
    I would love to see you branch out beyond 5 by 7 inch wet in wet, with inking to assist you with finer lines, and into other areas of watercolor. I love your style but it feels like you really just stay in your own comfort zone and down budge much from it.
    That being said, I still really enjoy your videos and you certainly have perfected the techniques that you do show us on camera. I was also impressed that no pen was used this time, and an actual rigger was used fir the fine lines instead. Keep up the great work, and please. Show us what else you can do with that amazing talent of yours!

    • @PeterSheelerart
      @PeterSheelerart  4 года назад +1

      Hi. I wouldn't call these little paintings my " comfort zone", but more my niche on youtube. I hate to admit it, but I'm simply not interested in making bigger and longer videos. I do this for fun. I have always worked in many styles and sizes. If you're interested the following link might give you an idea. www.flickr.com/people/7331668@N08/

    Beautiful images and great videos Peter. I'm just starting out and your limited palette and use of a flat brush is inspiring. Maybe I will have a go and see if I can avoid making mud for a change.. thanks for sharing. Look forward to more.

    • @PeterSheelerart
      @PeterSheelerart  8 лет назад

      +Stephen Foster . Thanks so much Stephen. I think a limited palette is the way to start. You learn haw those few colors interact with each other. Then, add new colors into the mix. Also, Learning what makes mud is very important and is learned best when you ruin a good painting.

    • @StephenFosterUK
      @StephenFosterUK 8 лет назад

      +Peter Sheeler I know from experience that too many choices will result in poor results for me in anything :) I am fortunate enough to be aware of why I create mud and what I should do to prevent it........then I pick up a brush and unfortunately any good intentions go out of the window along with my 'art'.
      On the plus side I enjoy trying.. I will get it!! Thanks

    I watched this and some of your sky videos when I first started water Colours about 2 years back just rewatched one yesterday and ended up watching a whole bunch again as well those I hadn't seen earlier .I still think they are brilliant and you are such a good artist you make them appear easy and effortless and also give us something we could try to re create .Your recent ones are mostly pen and wash and I realised that was the reason I had stopped watching ....why don't you make some more in just water Colours

    Thanks for your prompt reply:-) But just got to say again, fantastic stuff! ideal format for others to learn from, and i have watched a few, yet most will say how to paint such and such, then leave everything important out! What the.....heck?
    it's not the length of time that i mind for any video, but how that person guides you.
    So i'm hoping you keep this format for the future:-)

    I'm very impressed with your color mixing techniques. I've been studying your work and you've been very consistent with the same colors for over 2 years!! How did you, and how long did it take you to settle on your palette?

      Thank you. This limited group of colors was chosen for my urbansketching. Simply those I used most often from my larger palette. I added a couple more for these videos and now stick with this group for consistency.

    Peter, I am assuming the board is laying flat or at a slight angle? I have been enjoying your ink and watercolor demos. Thank you. You got me excited to getting back to watercolors.

    Another fantastic painting! I love your ink and wash but I love your watercolors even more!! You inspire me....I want to paint your beautiful clouds and this misty scene....so beautiful! What kind and size detail brush are you using? Also...I'm guessing you go back and clean up your paints afterwards?? I don't mix my brush in different colors like you do...guess I'm afraid to get them dirty or contaminated...so I wind up with too much water in my paints!! I'm going to try it your way! Thanks so much for sharing!

      +nknana3 . The paint is worn of my detail brush so no idea. Get mixing and make a mess. Only way to learn, and have fun ;)

      +Peter Sheeler I did it!! I painted all three of your watercolors....and I love them, especially the misty scene. I can't wait for you to post more!! Thank you so much! One more question for you....the paint in your palette...you have it on paper (how is it stuck to your palette?), do you spray it with water before you start painting to revive it? It doesn't look like fresh paint but it also doesn't look very wet. (Trying to find my balance between being too wet and too dry!). Again, many thanks!!

      +nknana3 . Two sided tape. But the tap is ruining my palette so may come up with different idea. My paints and brush are never very wet. If I need it wetter I'll wet the paper. Congratulations, sound like you're really having fun. Peter

    Very beautiful. I found something which you forgot :)
    You never used the pen in this pen and wash :)
    Another interesting thing about this painting is that it has warmer distant horizon and cooler proximal foreground.
    I had painted few paintings like this few years ago with gouache. Don't know how to share them here.
    I realize how difficult it is to paint those grass blades, without overdoing them and attracting too much attention.
    You have shown you are a master.

      +Dheeraj Kattula . Yikes! Thanks for the heads up on the title. Guess I've just typed pen and wash too many times and now its automatic. By switching the warm and cool I feel it gives more of a sunny morning mist feel.

      +Dheeraj Kattula . Hi Dheeraj. I think those paintings look great. We're always our own worst critic. When posting a comment Dheeraj, please don't reply to any comment string older than a day. Start a new one as this appeared way back in comments and I almost missed it. Don't mean to sound rude, but I'd hate to miss one and not reply to you. Thanks, Peter

    Thank you for taking us through it all in real time...and the music is lovely , as well. You mentioned this is a piece that you downsized for the sake of the lesson...what size do you normally work in? And...what paper do you use...as in weight?

      +photonmom . Thank you very much! I work from very small to about 4 x 5 feet. I do watercolour on canvas and hope to do a tutorial on this in the future. I use 2 papers. Arches 140lb hot press and Strathmore 90 lb 500 series paper. Both cotton rag papers. Peter

    Hi Peter, I have enjoyed your videos for quite a while and, only recently, started painting watercolors... I am a total beginner and when I tried this, which seems quite simple, I had a few issues:
    - the colors spread out much faster than yours creating a mess... I use 140lb Arches cold press with W&N artists pan paints, so I assume the problem is either that I soaked the paper more than you did (hard to judge from the video how much water you put on the paper) or I am putting too much water on my brush when I paint the strokes of the background bushes and trees
    - I have been getting a lot of back runs on the edge of the foreground grasses, I wonder if the 20 degrees angle of my paper board is one of the issue, where water from the mid section of the painting comes down quickly into the foreground
    - I don't have a sap green - I tried to simulate it with some Indian yellow and ultramarine blue, and that didn't work so well - is there a better way to mix a nice vivid light green like the one you used?
    Do you have any advice?
    Thanks and congratulations on this wonderful channel!

      Hello Francesco. Sap green is hard to mix. try adding a little yellow ochre to your mix.
      Knowing how wet/dry to keep your brush and paper can't be taught on a video. Every paper absorbs differently and every brush holds water at different levels. Even the humidity in your hone will have an effect. It's something learned through practice and experience. I recommend practicing on a sheet of paper with different levels of moisture from top to bottom.

    Peter: Am I correct in thinking that you use pan colours as opposed to tube? I seem to be seeing pans on your palette.

    • @PeterSheelerart
      @PeterSheelerart  8 лет назад

      +Tony Cook . Hi Tony. They're tube paints squeezed onto slips of paper.
