It was Weighandt's mistake for running the wrong route. The defenders just watch Messi when he has the ball, and forget that they are defenders, and not knowing that Messi was expecting Weighandt to run his route correctly.

Messi overestimated Weighandt, and so it's also his fault. One of the commentators said that Messi gave the ball away. Another one said it was Weighandt's mistake. As an ex footballer, I saw it as Weighandt's mistake. Because every midfielder was covered and if Messi had passed it forward, it would have been intercepted, resulting in a counter attack, and we would have seen the same outcome. The defense as a unit is awful. They are not on the same page with eachother. The pass was intercepted outside the box. Why was there not a single CB still back there near the keeper? We'll never know. But at least he made up for it with 3 gl contributions. Loll.

Of course we said that with Pele, Di Stefano, Eusebio, Cruyff, Van Basten, R9, Zidane, Ronaldinho, etc. I still think Messi and CR7 elevated the sport to a whole new stratosphere. They are the gold-standard.
From now until the end of time, they are the two to beat. Messi in particular, since he's not only an alien with magical abilities, but the way he is still involved in every aspect of attacking play and carrying the ball from the midfield. It's something extraordinary to behold.
CR7 is still banging in the goals, but what Messi does is far more difficult at that age. Not to mention Messi still scores plenty of goals to boot. It's just a joy to watch.
When they finally hang up their boots. Football will become lesser for it. I hope a day will come when we can pin our hopes on another potential GOAT, maybe two. I just don't see it. As much as I enjoy Yamal doing what he is at that age. I can't see him doing it for 20+ years.
