    Great video! I would like to share this opportunity to share a little more insight on the conquistadors, memorable survivor series performance. Needless to say, they were used brilliantly!! When the WWF wanted to execute a double heel turn. The double turn took place prior to the final elimination. So bear with me for a minute Demolition were heels and were counted out of the ring. And then they proceeded to attack Mr. Fuji making them faces. The powers of pain helped out Mr. Fuji making them heels. Seems simple, right? Keep in mind at this point the match was not over. So the powers had to go in and finish the match. Now, if they finish that match against one of demolitions other partners, it would not have turned out the same. Like imagine if they went in, and pinned the hated Bolshevik’s or Fabulous Rougeau brothers? Both teams were established at heels and had a lot of heat. And if the powers pinned one of those teams last the fans would’ve liked it to some degree thus negating that heel turn. So they needed a team that the powers of pain would have no problem beating on the side of evil, But not hated enough where the fans would be satisfied to see them lose. And that’s where the conquistadors fit in perfectly! Whoever thought of this was a genius!
    Also, which conquistador was known as simply “the conquistador?” I remember when I first started watching, there was a jobber that was just called the conquistador. And then gradually they had 2 show up lol

    Original Smash getting called out as Moondog Rex is one of the understated urban myths of the 80s.
    In 1987, there was no widespread Internet, there wasn't a bunch of smark fans that could see through the makeup and recognize Rex instantly, and Rex was on the house show loops far more than on TV.
    Randy Colley was simply a stopgap until Barry Darsow was available. It's that simple. No proof of "Moondog" chants because it didn't happen. Period.

    • @wrestlingsgreatestmoments
      @wrestlingsgreatestmoments  4 месяца назад

      So you're saying this is one of those instances where a story has been told so many times, it's taken on status as fact? I'd like to hear more because this is the first time I've heard this.

    • @oldandbitter
      @oldandbitter 4 месяца назад +2

      @wrestlingsgreatestmoments I just believe the smark Internet era of the 1990s has rewritten history a bit.
      In late-1986/early-1987, there weren't enough smark fans to recognize a non prominent enhancement talent like Moondog Rex under all that paint and get enough of a chant going to make the booking team rethink the idea of Moondog as Smash. I watched every WWF program in that time period. Rex didn't have a near weekly role at TV tapings like a Steve Lombardi, SD Jones, Iron Mike Sharpe, Jose Luis Rivera, etc. Further, TV tapings had moved from the intimate confines of the Pougheepsie Civic Center to arenas making it even less likely than a fan revolt that small would be fully audible to Vince and his bookers.
      To date, there is no video evidence supporting the "Moondog backlash". Further, Bill Eadie (Ax) built a good rapport with Barry Darsow (Smash #2) in Mid-South. It's very possible Eadie felt Darsow would be the better fit when he became available after fulfilling his NWA obligations.

      @@oldandbitter As someone interested in historical fact rather than folklore, I am always willing to listen to people who make an argument questioning conventional wisdom. I see where you're coming from and I encourage you to keep raising points like this. Let me share one with you I just found out. For decades, the report was that Mike Farkas (the pilot flying the plane Ric Flair was in that crashed) supposedly went into a coma and died less than a year later. However, Tim Hornbaker notes in his bio on Ric Flair that Farkas lived for several years.
