Can somebody explain what's the strategy at the beginning of a snooker frame before the potting starts?

The main objective is to hit a red while getting the white ball to safety to force the opponent into making a shot that fouls or leaves and easy pot for you to start making your break. As long shots are harder to hit, the white ball is preferably left at the top/baulk cushion after hitting a red
