"Silvesterchlausen" winter festival held in Switzerland
Tradition is a tie to the past, and in a tiny village in Switzerland, people make sure to keep their roots by celebrating a winter festival every year.
Locals in the canton of Appenzell, call it “Silvesterchlausen”. Although few documents exist on the origins of this New Year procession, one thing is clear and that is the steadfastness of the local people in celebrating it since the 16th century.
Every year on 13th of January, three groups of performers wearing special costumes, come out in the cold to sing and dance and cast out the evil spirit. The three groups are called the ugly ones, the beautiful ones, and the ugly-beautiful or nature ones.
All masques are traditionally men. The "beautiful" wear richly decorated women's dresses, the "ugly" ones shaggy twig coats and demon masques, and the "ugly beautiful" or forest-nature spirits wear a mix of both.
All of them carry bells: The "Schelli" wear large cow bells (the bells weigh up to 30 kg. The "Schelli" carry them around all day, quit a demanding task), whereas the "Rolli" or "Rollwieber" (Rolli women) wear smaller "bullet-bells" on two leather straps in the front and back of their torso.
