Luke would be known as the biggest douchebag if he had missed those torpedoes all together... He had the vent locked on his computer then he switches it off to trust in the force instead. He shoots the torpedoes but instead of the torpedoes doing a turn down the vents as the computer was to guide them, the torpedoes instead keep flying off straight and off to the void as Luke didn't yet know how to use the force to lift things let alone guide two torpedoes being shot.
If Luke was simply shot down by Vader before he could make the shot, I think it's a safe bet that the Rebel fighters would've been overwhelmed and destroyed (maybe even Han and Chewie), and the Death Star would have blown up Yavin IV - effectively wiping out the Rebellion, and with it, the knowledge of the Death Star's weakness. The Empire would have been able to rule through fear of the Death Star, which wouldn't even need to be used again (as it was fear of force rather than force itself that was the idea behind it), and the Death Star would look supposedly unstoppable. Most likely scenario.
But here is where the problem lies: Yuuzhan Vong invasion. Even if there's not rebels, the empire might not be strong enough to defend their empire from them.

Without any Jedi to rescue them, Leia and the resistance are forced to make a final stand against the First Order as Hux launches an invasion to destroy them once and for all.

Ep2: What if Yoda let Anakin and Kenobi die so he could capture Dooku? What would Palpatine's plans be then? Ep3: What if Anakin spared Dooku? The Count would have ratted out Palpatine so everything would be chaos on Coruscant.
So in this scenario, we can assume that Wedge and the other surviving Rebel pilots from the Death Star attack were either KIA, MIA or have been taken prisoners by the Empire? Luckily Mon Mothma and Admiral Ackbar were both absent from Yavin at this point (According to Legends), so I'm sure they can continue to lead the Rebellion, right guys?
