- Here's a very awesome commercial for Akira on the original Sci-Fi Channel, before they ruined it and renamed it to 'Syfy'. This is from 1998, I remember this is how I originally found Akira when I was 11, seeing this commercial made me want to see it. I am not really into anime to be honest, but I love horror and gore.
This is a great S-VHS source copy, thanks to a friend who supplied me with this from it's original airing back in '98, with a DVD-R full of incredible commercials. This came from one of the Star Trek: The Original Series Sci-Fi Channel Special Edition episodes.
Enjoy! And more to come, eventually.
I was in the third grade when I saw this commercial. I told my mom it was a cartoon and that I really wanted it. She knew about pokemon, and dragon ball z. So she figured what the heck. Then they started coming in, one by one. Each month.... Akira, Roujin Z, Geist, Record of lodoss...... changed my life forever. Thank you for being a typical 90's mom, mom. I love you.
Same. I thought cartoons were cutesy and funny.
I saw this and was like... JESUS CHRIST.
She didn't know what she was getting you. They often didn't. Or else they wouldn't have bought it for us.
@@michaelclark2097 But those anime have their cutesy and funny moments (Except Akira)
Cool to hear but she sounds more of an opposite of what a 1990s mother would do though. Pretty neat though and wish I had those then (mainly because they weren't peak my interests yet in that time.)
Bro, same!! I started my anime journey with things like Akira, Tecnhoman, and Ronin Warriors, as well as Robotech. So I saw Akira in third grade before Pokemon Came to the west.
Several years later, and Akira would wind up being aired on Toonami.
THE OFFICIAL TBONE2004 it's just a theme of Mortal Kombat movie!!
Yep
Along with the Japanese anime Pokemon movie trilogy (1998-2000)
@@brandonreina5461 I'm referring to when they aired on the Adult Swim era of Toonami. And yes, they did give it the TV-MA rating, but censored a LOT of stuff!
Wrong. That was many years later, and by then, Toonami was a late night thing for adults who had grown up with it.
Old-school anime is the best. I used to record the features shown on Sci-Fi Channel's "Saturday Anime" every week.
Don't forget that they also show Kaiju movies and Zeiram (which is part of Iria)
Me too. Also, Cinemax would show Anime late night back then too.
Ah yes the VHS era!!!
Yep. Starz had a lot of stuff too.
@@spacemanmonster23God bless 27 dollar, 4 episode dub tape and 30 dollar 4 episode sub tape
This ad always intrigued me as a kid. And my dad was enough of a sicko that he might've ordered it, had I the courage to express my interest/fascination with it (To put things in perspective, he rented and let us watch Faces of Death when I was just 6 or 7). At any rate, it is easily one of the most memorable things I've ever seen on daytime television. I watched the film many years later, based solely on the memory of it. It's one of the few commercials I can recall distinctly from childhood memory, despite not having seen it since then, until now.
This had to have been the inspiration behind the Every Angel Is Terrifying ad in Dawn FM
This shit SPEAKS TO ME. I love it, and I love the one who shares this with the community. 10/10, king.
bruh the weeknd’s every angel is terrifying
Classic 90's ad.
"EVER HEAR OF ANIME?! THIS SHIT'S GONNA KICK YOUR ASS AND YOU'RE GONNA LOVE IT!"
obeythemelon brings me back man
エバン小室 Komuro it's better than Cartoon Network and TNT!!!
Back in the 90s, any anime regardless of the genre, is considered for "mature audiences" only. I noticed that Project Ako was shown in the commercial, and that is equivalent to at least a PG-13 movie. Times sure has changed.
To be fair A-Ko had quite a bit of nudity in it so I guess that may have been shocking for a cartoon in the 90s. Can't say the same for Record of Lodoss War, which is about as "provocative" as Lord of the Rings, and Slayers, which they showed a bit of in the 2nd commercial, is straight up a kids show.
But akira is seinein a demographic aimed to adult men
@@HeruruMeruru and don't forget Iria, since it's also a prequel to Zeiram (which Sci-Fi channel itself have aired then. Which is probably when they shown the commercial)
ok I like the idea of Kiki's Delivery Service being "Too Mature" b/c it's anime lol
@@heisensaul5538 it was a marketing tool in the 90s and early 2000s used to sell shit.
Listen to The Weeknd's "Every Angel Is Terrifying" - think he was a fan of this ad.
The weeknd after life album.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤
Man, I remember this commercial. I got it on VHS while recording something else, back in the day. I was actually looking to see if anyone had put it up on RUclips a couple years earlier, but never found it. Nice to see it again.
I was 12, this advertisement changed my life forever. Akira was my first true dive into anime and it set the bar HIGH, a fact I am grateful for. I’m happy I stumbled across this video
I remember watching this in 4th grade on a tape of some educational program my PE teacher recorded on tv. I was the only kid in the room who knew what anime was and everyone else was like wtf? Oh the days before anime went mainstream here Lol good times..
Abel saw this as a child 😍
Every Angel is Terrifying
every angel is terrifying
I've been looking for this commercial for years thank you sir. This got stuck in my head for a long time back then.
All these people remembering the commercial from Sci-Fi. I remember when Fox Detroit was airing the commercial during the day time and i remember it being outlawed in my house simply cuz of the commercial. Kinda like Heavy Metal was outlawed by my parents cuz it was "too bad" and yeah, nowadays you'd see this run as a normal program on like Toonami or Teletoon.
That's crazy lol! I don't remember it being shown on WJBK but then again I was very little during this era.
Yeah, to my recollection I saw it late at night on MTV while watching Aeon Flux and Liquid Television. I didn't even have sci-fi channel back when this commercial aired.
I remember as a kid asking my dad to rent Fist of the North Star for me from Blockbuster video.
I was curious how a 'cartoon' could be 18+ rated. Boy, was I in for a shock 😂
mature audiences only.....pfff if it's good enough for the youth of Japan its good enough for any youth.
Back then I feel their voice was not strong enough in a way unlike today with social media. the 90's was great as the parents were limited in their nagging to be heard. Mortal Kombat was the exceptions since Uncle Sam butted in ;)
Lieutenant Yoshi It better than the FOX 32 CHICAGO in the 90's!
Well not as long if you seen it on Adult Swim
@@lieutenantyoshi5704 LOL do you know that akira is a sainen manga right?
LoL!!
good old scifi channel I caught all the anime they showed one of the few ways I could watch!
Well there's also Toonami, Crunchy Roll, and KissCartoon
Hailey Shannon that's nowadays but back then was very different dude
Weeknd"s
every angel is terrifying
Around this time, anime still catered to about 10%-15% of the market outside of Japan, a very dedicated part of the market but not huge. Little did anyone know that around this same year, a little show called Pokémon, would explode that to mass audiences. Thanks to that show (which success is mainly thanks to two Game Boy games that were released), Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball Z, anime is no-longer a niche thing.
Thank you for uploading, brings back memories:)
Awesome commercial, I have the exact same Akira VHS tape. The box is in kinda of rough shape and I haven't watched it yet but, it's still cool to own a copy of Akira on VHS.
Thanks for uploading
Akira was one of the first anime I ever watched, in a late night airing on the Sci Fi Channel, and it was the moment I knew I was hooked for life. I know the Pioneer dub is the better of the two, but I'll always prefer the original Streamline Pictures dub because it's what I saw first.
I love the streamline dub because i grew up with it
It's like something outta my Japanese Animes...
You have a girls name opinion irrelevant
I actually subscribed to this.. AND the second one... It was the way I build out my collection alongside suncoast video.. It was my high school years, and I paid for it with my after school job.
So one of them started with Akira, and the other I believe was Ninja Scroll, and you'd get one a month (or in my case 2 a month), and it always felt random enough that you'd get something different every time, but curated so you never got the same thing twice, and you actually, eventually, did get a few full series. I had a lot of slayers and lodoss war, and some random movies. Today, it would have been the crappiest deal ever, and back then... Well, after a few years it kinda petered out. Better stuff kept coming out (heading towards the golden age) and anime became more accessible, but in that brief window of time, it WAS useful to get exposure to more unusual things.
They must have had a deal with RIghtStuff or Manga Entertainment and Central Park Media, because that was the bulk. But then again.... M.D. Geist right next to Ghost in the Shell, so...
I remember this, my intro to Anime. The Good ole days, end of the "Golden Age".
I was 10 when I saw this commercial on tv. Some scenes here engraved into my mind forever but it made me want to watch those shows/movies especially Akira
The classic move of "first installment 4.99 PLUS 3.95 S&H with subscription of 19.99 per month after PLUS shipping." My Dad saw that and said... "Let's just go to the video store and you pick out what you want." The good ol' days. Started with Akira, then Ninja Scroll, then Ghost in the Shell, then stopped after that because... that's really the only anime anyone needs. lol.
Before this ad, my knowledge of anime was limited to the stuff on Nick jr in the late 80s end early 90s, and whatever else was on daytime TV, including sailor Moon. I think this ad was the first time I saw a name and country of origin attached to that particular style. I bought an animerica magazine shortly after and convinced my mom to let me watch it, arguing that it's as broad and diverse as any other medium. But this ad was pretty revolutionary
I remember seeing this on our satellite’s Fox channel one time. I couldn't have been no more than 12 or 13.
So, show of hands: how many people were like me and mistakenly thought “Akira” was the guy on the motorcycle back then?
Woah I can't believe that The Weeknd actually made a reference to this commercial ruclips.net/video/kMXs99tPkcg/видео.html
Yes i remember this commercial one summer i spent a week in ft polk Louisiana at my brother's barracks civilians weren't allowed but managed to sneak me in the entire week ,as soon as I walked in long and behold the entire Anime 📼 set next to his tv snd VCR . I'll never forget my first exposure to 90s anime 😮😂
I saw this when I was 5 or 6, except the one I saw had footage from Akira, Fist of the North Star, and Genocyber. That one was brutal.
AKIRA MAKES BLADE RUNNER LOOK LIKE MALCOM X
Brings back memories.
Brings back so many memories
But Yeah, I Still Remember Checking Out It's Block Ani-Monday Back In '08. Some Great Titles Straight From The Manga Entertainment Library. Like Read Or Die, Dead Leaves And Especially Gurren Lagann (Though It Was Dubbed By Bandai Entertainment) Just To Name A Few.
I was 16 when I saw this commercial
"Akira makes Blade Runner look like Disney world".
Can't say I agree with that statement, but it is catchy marketing. I miss these kinds of commercials.
First DVD I ever bought was Ghost in the Shell.... went back the next day for Akira and never looked back 😆
OMG I remember this so much!
Yup definitely subscribed to Columbia House for this back in the 90s.
What a time it was to be alive.
Literally how I was introduced to anime.
these tapes, Dragon Ball Z, Samurai Pizza Cats, and also playing the first Goemon N64 game is what made me a massive otaku when i was a fifth grader, went strong through to high school. "I'm not watching cartoons! It's called anime! It's more mature!" me and just about every other grade-school otaku had a big chip on our shoulders back then.
god damn those old anime clubs, I never got my invite.
This makes me miss being a kid
I know it says 1998 in the copyright, but this is close to the exact same commercial I used to watch in 94. Maybe just throw in a few of the newer releases.
When Anime had balls!!
Ohh wicked city!!
Oh wait that was the other promo.
@@spacemanmonster23 I remember that promo my mom bought a couple of vhs from that
@@spacemanmonster23 I want to see that promo again
Only $4.99 man that's a Damn good deal but, now the VHS goes up to about $500
Like the original dub or the sub or what?
Can somebody anybody tell me the name of the anime at 0:15 I’ve been looking for it for at least 20 years, that monster/demon specifically
its Iria:Zeiram the Animation. its a 6(?) episode ova. its a really cool and unique anime. you should check it out.
What is that song. It's fucking awesome
4.95 wow
I was always fascinated by this commercial. Of course these movies were sinful, so I could only watch this one minute Montage with guilty curiosity.
Anime For The Win, Dude. Whoo!
I remember when i frist saw this commercial and i was surper intrigued especially that tank round..nothing could compar to what i was looking at at the time...nothing.
This awesome, I remember seeing this commercial when I was 11 on the Sci-Fi channel in the morning. I asked my dad to buy it for me lol he said said no, ugh had to wait until I had money to buy them myself, but I got to see all of them on Saturday Anime over the years
music? it would be swell to know what the track was
It's some type of version of 'Twilight Zone' by 2 Unlimited
It makes Blade Runner look like Disney World xD
Sonya, Sub-zero, Jax, Kano, Liu Kang, Scorpion...CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY!
do you know if this is the commercial that got you a box of random anime tapes after the akira purchase?
Funny the first anime I saw was the blue girl yeah 😂
whoa.
I remember
I remember this commercial and there was also another one but it had wrath of a ninja that's what my mom signed up for she got wrath of the ninja (that was the first gory anime I ever saw) and project ako
I thought Iria was the coolest anime ever when I first saw it on Sci-Fi channel. I don't recommend revisiting it.
When Anime were truly graphic, exciting, amazing and beautiful. And Akira was on the nose about the Olympics of 2020... Unless the committee gone to Tokyo intentionally because of Akira.
What's the name of the music that's playing during this commercial?
It's some type of version of 'Twilight Zone' by 2 Unlimited
Song?
"Record of Lodoss War"-Future out of Control
...
Well, I mean, DND could be set in the future, but last I checked, Lodoss is set in a fantasy world with some very very low tech and it is for teens.
After reading these comments I realize that not all of my peers were fortunate enough to have a mom awesome enough to buy them the subscription for these vhs editions..... Not surprised really. But please, if anyone else was effected by these anime at a young age. comment on your experience!
Classic
This commercial is cheesy as hell in retrospect but could you seriously imagine watching shit like Akira as a sheltered American teenager in the 90s? Must’ve been fucking mind-melting
I never liked the word “cheesy”, I never use it
But you didn't warn me.
que pasa si llamas a ese numero?
Toonami should do aired all of these old school violent, adult, gory anime on Adult Swim.
Who agrees with me on that idea?
Shit. I need to stop off at Hogan's Video and rent that movie. If they don't have it I'll swing by Blockbuster on my way home from work at Hardee's. Blockbuster has everything. Don't let me forget guys.
KANEDAAAAAAA
Amazing times in the 80's-90's. Back when just about all the Anime was for mature audience. Now we have a "PG culture" that products like this would be shamed to no end.
The Weeknd is a genius
What the heck is happening to the guy in the beginning? Looks like his whole body let out a huge fart.
Spoony send me here
the end theer sound sliek 2 unlimited mortal combat tribal zone twilight zone lol
Joel Perez anime
Could you imagine if the Streamline dub of Akira being aired on NBC back in the early to mid 1990's and the Pioneer dub of Akira being aired on ABC in the early 2000's?
if this were an NFT id buy a pack
back then, commercials showed people's head's getting blown off. I miss the 90's
I remember this commercial like it was yesterday
"Makes Blade Runner look like Disney World" wow lol
Ironically Blade Runner would get a CGI anime in 2021.
