Terrible Loss and so very preventable. RIP
😢 My condolences !
What I don't get is, the Marines and Army has a feature with their body armor (for amphibious operations) where they just pull a cord and their body armor becomes undone so you can lose all that weight if you fall into the water. Why wasn't that feature there? Going to have to look at the procurement chain as well.
Plus, they make buoyant body armor, it's expensive, but I'm sure the SEALS have it...
The mission set must have been unique.
From what i understand each squad of seals has the ability to plan their own missions after given a task. My guess would be they just didn't think about that unfortunately and used gear that they're used too using without thinking about it. Which could be likely considering how the other seal jumped in to try to try and help while having so much weight.
Don and Doff your gear. It will be interesting to see what the investigation turns up. If any wrongdoing was done, I hope accountability is administered. Too many of these investigations end up with no accountability. Sad . RIP Gentleman ❤🇺🇸
Those devices only work barely out of the box and with no actual equipment attached. It’s a check the box.
All interesting comments here! I was thinking, er'body has a knife 🔪 on em right? So cut a shoulder strap & a couple molex side straps all on the same side & peel that stuff off.
Or lighten the load & add a small floatation thing that'll make 50lbs feel like 15 or 20lbs.
But hey, it's combat! Ain't no guarantees on nothing!
R.I.P. fellas & thanks so much 😢 for your service & sacrifice. 🙏
So sad to hear this. Grateful for their courage and service to our country!! Prayers for the families.
Gear can contribute to safety issues. We had a Marine sergeant killed in a simple rollover accident of a light armored vehicle. Seems the seatbelts couldn't reach across the armored vests the guards wore. No one said anything about it until after the incident. I will never forget the funeral.
Os***** needs to upgrade their seatbelts.
common sense says that you can not swim encumbered by 80 lbs of gear. so did these guys have no common sense or is the story a fabrication?
Why didn’t they have emergency inflatable vest just in case??? I hope the Navy learns from this tragedy.
It wouldn’t work their equipment weighed them down
There are tactical neutral buoyancy vests which accomodate bulletproof plating, why the Seals weren't using it is yet to be determined.
@@dexterplameras3249 true but with the ammo and weapons on them plus the ruff waters, would they have made a difference?
Its a cover up. Probably anthore secret sttack on the hiuthi terrorists. You gotta keep OPSEC
@@nhjhbmkuy7173 Average weight of a Navy Seal is 179 pounds (81 kilograms), and all humans have close to neutral bouncy. Bouncy is determined by the amount of water displaced by the volume and the weight of the item displacing the water. So if the total weight is 239 pounds then to achieve neutral bouncy, 239 pounds worth of water would need to be displaced (this is easier in metric by the way as 1 litre of water = 1 kilo). If the vest's don't give them enough bouncy, then I guess they could do things such as more seals carrying less equipment. But I don't know for sure as I'm not in the military.
I randomly watched two specials on Navy Seal and SBS boat boarding about 1 week before the two American Seals drowned. They both highlighted how dangerous the boarding ladder phase was in every way. I noted the guys looked really heavy-- and appeared to have shed the frogman wetsuits worn in old seal photos of the 90's... When the two American seals were reported dead I knew right away what happened. Frankly they need to revert back to old tactics and it's irresponsible nobody saw this coming.
Hmmmm.... isn't it suppose to be... DANGEROUS ?!

Yeah because you can't report they were shot.
Pretty much
lol, you people are weird. I'm surmising there is video of the incident since it's extremely time detailed.
This is happening to all special ops forces as commanders don’t understand switching environments from cqb in a city to marops. Failure to apply correct tactical gear due to risk assessments saying must have Kevlar armor that can’t be ditched.
Rest in power. May god give your family comfort. Very sad. No military background but my god do I respect and look up to these men. My condolences

So let me get this straight...These Navy Seals JUMPED in the ocean with 50+ pounds of weight on their backs? Im confused as heck. Then the person trying to save the other, also jumped in with a bunch of weight on his back? More confused. Something smells "fishy" here
Nothing fishy. The report is listed in seconds elapsed which means there is video. First guy fell on the boarding about 9 feet into the water. 2nd dude jumped in after him only 11 seconds after he fell.
1st dude drowned within 26 seconds. 2nd dude drowned 32 seconds after he jumped in.
Rest in peace god bless
They went straight down. Never had a chance.
Didn’t they have the pull cords to drop their gear? I did in the army. Pull the cords and your tactical vest comes right off. I’m not saying they did anything wrong. I just don’t know if the Navy has the same vest that I had.
You should know better than to speculate then. An IOTV or plate carrier doesn’t weigh 50-80 pounds, so I’m assuming the “tactical vest” you are referring to isn’t the only equipment they were carrying. So, the pull cord alone likely isn’t the issue.
He is def. a hero that goes even beyond brotherhood sad. I can't believe no 1 had thought enough to think something like this could happen stupid. They should have a cord like a parachute to release gear in an emergency. Gear is easy to replace 2 seals are not. R.I.P. you 2 have tried to help make the world a safer place THANK YOU!!!!!!! from Canada

Rest in Peace Brothers! That’s part of their pact! If one goes in another goes in after him or her! Great Job! It’s very sad though having lost 2 incredible lives!❤ Supposedly a bunch of weapons on their way to Somali! Of course they still finished the mission they were ordered to do! The guilt will stay with those guys forever which is awful..😢 Being part of many deployments, I have been going to counseling for 10 years now! Was going every week for 10 years and just now started going every 2 weeks! God Bless!
There has to be some way to add some type of liferaft to all their gear. Like pull a certain cord and a life preserver pops out and inflates, or a quicky mechanism to pull off a substanial amount of gear off in case of emergencies
RIP😥
What a trip!, I was just thinking about this story this morning. I thought the same thing that it was preventable

Navy Seals are probably the most-intelligent, best-trained, and most well-prepared individuals in all of the military; I find this story very difficult to believe.
If they started sinking they would just take the gear off right? The news is either lying or they got the story wrong.
Absolutely agree, I’m familiar with a few individuals that served and they would not by any means die from drowning with 50lbs of gear on! Never in a million years. It’s called drowning proof training for a reason.

I don't see Somalia in it's entirety being worth two Navy Seals. What are we attempting to gain in Somalia that is both practically accomplished and worth the lives of two good men?
Navy never heard of Mogadishu?
This seriously suuks... I don't understand why they were not trained or able to literally cut away from their gear!?! I know diving is almost always a delivery mech to get them where they need to be.. Same goes with chutes into water.. I KNOW SEALs are not trained in deep technical diving and dealing with hardware issues while going deeper and deeper.. I just cannot understand how they couldn't cut away from their rigs / gear... I hope the Navy figures this out.. There should always be a "rip cord" with gear.. Varying degrees, of course.. Dang.. R.I.P. Soldiers.. Or, don't if you are busy on the other side.. RESPECT
Still doesn't make sense. They're elite. Highly trained. They could've just let go of everything and swam up to the surface. They're not telling someone.😢
Man, it's like conspiracy people are too lazy to read the actual report and rather make up reasons.
Read the report. The whole incident took 47 seconds which means they have video.
🙏
With polyethylene plates and specifically made gear (Mustang survival SOF) for these types of operations, drowning should have never had happened. On some of these belt worn buoyancy devices they even have auto-deploy features based on water pressure. I honestly thought from the start that it was going to be a propellor accident. Sad to see this was preventable.
LOST 2 HERO
All that training didn't work
of course, they would sink with all that weight. Like throwing a rock in a lake or ocean. DUH !!!
God Bless our 🇺🇸 Troops 🇺🇸🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
For any maritim operations they have quick release plate carriers, one tug on the tab and your gear will fall off. The "official" explanation doesn't add up.
Also are issued co2 bags that attach to the battle belt used for emergencies. Definitely more to the story not be reported.
@@chazw6023it said preventable meaning they have the emergency gear but the 2 seals probably did not put them on thinking it was not necessary. I watched a docu on a Navy Seal on a different mission in Iraq and he said in the interview that they wont put on full armor because sometimes they think it is not necessary. No back plates etc. And he even said, I hope my family does not see this.
I had one of those and they won't always work. Especially if they had rifles slung across their chest, which can still hold the plate carrier there even after the cord is pulled
What navy get trained how to swim
It’s cover up
did you not listen to a word that was said? they had 50-80 pounds of gear on them 🤦🏻!!

Bro what?

No quick release on the vest? Wtf?
Deplorables per Obama
They didn't have the proper gear to climb wet hulls, railings, that stuff slick like baby oil & too heavy. They have too much protective gear on for speed, too heavy instead of donning a co2 inflatable vest. Na, it's just a charged co2 snorkel vest & spare air, commando your rifle
Deep six in a few sec. Layers work shoes socks skibbies, rash, full suit but it's just an auto inflatable buoyancy device, cartridge & snorkel vest for weight good for 100s of lbs. Times basics are easier & get the job done. Anywhere around water, spare air, even though not recommended for life saving Es like that, I pass that for last resort E immersions.
😮
This never made any sense to me. Water operations is their specialty, surely someone must have thought at some point in the seal history, what happens if we have 80 pounds of gear on and fall in the water, what do we do? That question was never asked? Seems far fetched. I know if I put a backpack on with 20 pounds and jump in my pool its going to create an issue.
