General rule based on my experience, of the games I end up listing, 10% will be actually like a full-on success. 70% will be okay, not failures but they don't blow up. 20% usually fail, those would be games that get cancelled or die on launch. @@GamerZakh good point, but I think the issue is also that there are many, many good-to-great games that are also failing commercially these days. Alone in the Dark, Outcast 2 or even listed Thaumaturge come to mind off the top of my head. dope video. This is a long shot but do you remember a game from late 90's early 2000's, it was a bit like spell force having a main hero/lord and had other creatures to fight with you but you only had 6/8 slots in a formation around said lord/hero and i don't think you built buildings rather you explored towns, caves ect for resources extra monsters. ive been trying to remember from a vague memory for years
There was an isometic rpg, with bubblehead like view. Forgot the name now but that looks like a great one too. The guy was waiting a bettle like car to pick him in the trailer.
I generally don't cover Kickstarters. I have talked about and promoted Wayward Realms a great deal for years now. If it can't hit it's goal at this point then something is very wrong. Looking at it, it seems it'll hit the goal no problem. Beyond that, they need to be able to stand on their own.
"You have to be into dragons" - Zakh Who the heck is not into dragons?! Dragons are awesome! The staple of fantasy! The first thing people think of when they hear the word "Fantasy" are Knights and Dragons!
Hey GamerZakh. Have you ever covered the Daggerfall spiritual successor called The Wayward Realms? The Kickstarter only opened up a couple days ago and it's getting close to being fully funded!
Metaphor now has a release date on Steam of October 11th! I would also like to see more turn-based, party based, cRPGs, rather than all these flashy real-time almost shooter adventures! For Unicorn Overlord and other games like it, seem to use the "Me Go - You Go". This is the closest to real battles, as you set your army off, and then hope it goes to plan, and the enemy move where you think they will. The old game "Combat Mission" had this system.
Hmm relaxing city builders? Does it have to be city-building? Because I took a break recently and played through 3 years of Stardew Valley to relax haha. But if you're looking for a builder specifically, I'm not sure how relaxing you're looking for. Maybe Pioneers of Pagonia, Fabledom, or really Manor Lords can be quite relaxing for new city-builders. Sometimes I find going old school is pretty relaxing and I would boot up something like SimCity 2000 or SC4.
@@GamerZakh cheers, maybe I'll give Stardew valley a try, I've never really thought about it. But I think I'll see how Manor Lord's is like. But I guess it doesn't have to be a city builders, it's just what makes me feel happy when I make an efficient city with a good economy. You know emperor Rise of the middle kingdom could also work. Thanks man!
You know how difficult to do a title video like this? So much title involve many research and editting. Those who watch this better subscribe and give a like. You own Zakh that much.
Overall this is a great overview of upcoming RPGs. What I don't get though, is why quite some of the segments are outdated when it comes to releases. Example: you are skeptical about Last Epoch because it's been in Early Access for so long and you mention it might release in February 2024. But by the time you released this video (about a week ago), Last Epoch has long since gone out of Early Access and had a successful release. This makes some segments misleading. I get that it takes a long time to craft videos like these, and the world has changed since you started making this video. But it would have helped if you had edited the video and at least added textual information with updates on top of your spoken narrative.
Ah because I'm a solo creator and it takes me many months to make a video like this. I release parts as I complete them then try to update and compile a 'megalist' to cover everything once I finish the full list. I try to edit it with the latest info but it's a LOT. I actually edited and re-recorded many segments but it's easy to miss things. There's a reason no other creator does this, I'm trying to do what is generally impossible unless you have a team. Having said that, I did re-edit the Last Epoch segment and the only problem with it right now is that it's talking about the release in the future tense. I don't express much scepticism about it, I'm just saying it has been in early access for a long time and that it's releasing in February, and it did release in Feb so that's still right. I didn't have time to fix all the tenses throughout the video, but the content for Last Epoch is accurate outside of it went from 20K user reviews to 80K. If you infer a bit, then you'll know Feb was in the past and that it would be like watching an older video later. Basically, change the release date of this video to January and you wouldn't have a problem watching this today. I wish I could do this by January but this video exists like this or not at all. Because to fix every problem would mean I'd not be able to do anything else with my time and the list would be way too late. Rough estimate, it takes about 40-60 work hours to make a single normal list video, meaning this video is between 240-420 work hours. So that's like 3 months of full time work if I was doing literally nothing else and I can tell you, this video won't pay 3 months of rent lol.
for last epoch, you say "it will be released February 2024", wich is obviously passed. Similar things happen with a few other games. Are those games already released then, or were the delayed?
This video was made in parts over the course of months, so sometimes something I already recorded is phrased a bit off. Last Epoch did indeed release in February.
How much time does it take to make one of those lists? There's a few games in there that are already released, but I won't hold it against you since it's an awful lot of RPGs to research and list. If I were a game maker releasing a RPG in 2024 and I didn't even make any of your lists, I would feel really bad about my chances of success, lol.
For this kind of list, it's put together over many months, which is why the phrasing is sometimes a bit off when this final version is finally made. I try to fix it with a few run throughs in editing. Generally though I still keep the curation updated and although some of these have already released I'm keeping this as a '2024' list, so even those that have released can stay. But games that released end of 2023 have been removed.
All I'm really interested in is another Planescape Torment, Disco Elysium, Deus Ex. Story and lore over combat. It's nice being able to resolve problems with violence, and it's nice not playing as a predefined character; that's why I'm not looking for adventure/puzzle games.
Damn Zakh. That's a long list. As much as I want a proper vampire RPG I have little to no faith VTMB2 will deliver anything of substance let alone hold a candle to the first game.
I had the video running in the background, and around @1:08:50 I hear "you're supposed to unite *whales* against the English [...] so it is pretty historical" I had to switch tabs to double check lol. It would be a cool game concept tho, uniting marine life to fight whalers and fishers. Kind of like the novel "the Swarm".
Surprised this list doesn't have Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance. It was still upcoming when this video dropped and now that I've played it a fair bit it's definitely in the running for GOTY for me. The demon recruitment and huge amount of resulting customization mechanically combined with amazing art design make it a must play.
@@HiddenAdept I don't usually list enhancements of games unless they're something more notable. Shin Megami Tensei V released 3 years ago, so it's not a new or upcoming game. Yeah Vengeance is an enhancement but it's not even to the level of being a remaster, plus I don't even list remasters as upcoming games either unless they're of a very old game. Gothic is here because it's a whole remake from the ground up of a very old game. I also list Age of Mythology in my strategy list because that's a huge rebuild of a very old game. Vengeance is just a sizeable update of a 3 year old game, I wouldn't say that's a whole new upcoming game.
@@GamerZakh Well the original release was Switch exclusive. For people with zero interest in the Nintendo Switch like myself it's basically the original release lol
@@HiddenAdept Haha yeah I get that, though to be fair for all I don't list new platform releases for other games too. Like I don't list the FF7 Remake episodes when they come to PC either.
You mean The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak? That released in 2021? 2023 on Steam. And Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance? That's just an enhanced version of the game that released in 2021. They're both old games.
I would love to play an anarcho-RPG for once, where the goal is to bring anarchy into the world instead of order and monarchical rule. For a change... you know...
A most magnificent list of abundance and greatness. Thank you for all the time and research in making this inspiring list of gaming happiness possible oh masterful GamerZakh friend to gamers the world over! ☕
I've seen dozens of games go through the process of "no worries" to "complete disappointment" over the year. Few updates, no real gameplay footage, long periods of silence. For something like that I can't give full confidence to because they aren't showing full confidence.
4:06 I disagree. It used to be that the number of weak titles per good one was much less than now. Digital distribution and platforms like steam make it easier for clumsy developers to publish their “works”. The best games are from the end of 90's and early 00's
You're not disagreeing with anything I said, I never said there are fewer bad games today or that the ratio is the same or better now. I said it wasn't all good in the 90s and before, and that there were a lot of bad games back then and even the good games had problems. I don't think you disagree with that? Because that's how it was. Yeah the ratio is worse now, but also the total amount of good games today is WAY above what it was in the 90s, but we're not disagreeing on anything.
I'm not sure why you seem to imply that Gameplay footage without UI is not actual gameplay footage. It's very easy to remove the UI of a game while you're playing it from the developer's perspective
Because gameplay footage without the UI is not gameplay, it's a machinima. 'In-engine footage' is not gameplay. Sure it's easy to hide the UI, what's difficult is having a functional UI to show off with real gameplay. If they just hid it, why is there no footage of showing it? Also, I've been listing games like this for over a decade. I could not tell you how many games were faking 'gameplay' in their trailers. Often they are just cinematics from the game, sometimes the game is severely underdeveloped and doesn't even have a UI yet, or worst case, literal animations of things that have not been implemented. There are so many trailers today where they are literally just an animation, like animated in video/animation software. Blatant ones even animate a mouse cursor moving around.
@@GamerZakh while it is true that there are plenty of purely cinematic trailers with only animation. There were plenty of examples in this video where the game was show gameplay without UI, and it was definitely actual gameplay 😅 UI is easy to show. The only hard part about it is making it intuitive for the player to understand (that's where UX comes in) which is part of why I imagine game devs tend to leave it out of trailers (but also because UI isn't really appealing from a showcase perspective). Either way, it is very easy to tell when you are looking at real gameplay vs. a cinematic or animation
@@Luis-Torres Yes, I have worked in game design. I have a close friend who is currently a UI/UX professional. And it's not about whether the footage being shown is from actual gameplay or not. It's that without the UI, it's not gameplay in my books. The UI is part of gameplay, hiding it makes a nice cinematic experience, but you're not showing gameplay, you've made a machinima. If a game has shown literally zero full gameplay, I don't owe them the benefit of the doubt. I criticised AoE 4's "gameplay" trailer because it was a cinematic. I criticised Homeworld 3's "gameplay trailer" because it was a machinima. You can have a cinematic trailer AND a gameplay trailer. But look at something like Fable (the upcoming one). Zero gameplay has been shown. Some point to the character throwing the fireball at the bandit, but is that actually from gameplay? Maybe, maybe not, but I don't owe them the benefit.
@@GamerZakh Well we do agree that you shouldn't give a game trailer any credit that doesn't have gameplay. I'm not disagreeing on any of that. I only disagree on what constitutes "gameplay". Gameplay is simply that: gameplay. There are actually some games you can play where you can literally turn off the UI as a player. Does that suddenly not count as gameplay even though a player is actually playing it? I'd be hard pressed to say that it isn't. Gameplay has nothing to do with the GUI (I think at this point we should at least be more clear on the terminology). I don't think a trailer needs to show an in-game HUD to prove that it's gameplay. That's all I'm saying.
@@Luis-Torres If you want to get into specifics, specify the games and trailer footage. Each one is an individual case. I've written dissertations on interactive media, so I could get into it, but a RUclips's comment thread is a bit of an uncomfortable place to have such an in-depth discussion. In this video, I bring up my scepticism in some cases because of context that isn't always communicated. Maybe I don't say it for other games because those have shown additional footage I didn't use. Or maybe I say it because the publisher has faked footage before. Or maybe I see something that is or isn't there that I didn't mention specifically. Unless you specify a part in the video and clarify with me what I mean, then you might not even know what I'm talking about.

Who the heck is not into dragons?! Dragons are awesome! The staple of fantasy! The first thing people think of when they hear the word "Fantasy" are Knights and Dragons!
Can't wait to play new arc line I'm a big fan of arcanum
Hey GamerZakh. Have you ever covered the Daggerfall spiritual successor called The Wayward Realms? The Kickstarter only opened up a couple days ago and it's getting close to being fully funded!
I have covered it quite a bit, there's a short mention of it in this video too. I'm very curious about how it'll turn out.
Impressive compilation
Thanks!
O great Gamerzack. I have recently gone into my exam session and i feel drained. Have you got any good and relaxing city builders to play?
Thanks man!
Great Content!! First time seeing the channel! Commenting for the algorithm!!!
Best vid EVER.
You know how difficult to do a title video like this? So much title involve many research and editting. Those who watch this better subscribe and give a like. You own Zakh that much.
Thank you! That's really kind of you to say.
I subscribed for it.
" i dont want game mechanics to be copyrighted" oh boy did this line age well ... xD
How long did this take to import to RUclips?
Do you mean how long did it take me to make this?
Swordhaven looks pretty awesome, im withdrawing from BG3 still...
Wuthering Waves came out last week. Note; there's no freedom about it in the game apart from it being an open-world gacha game.
for last epoch, you say "it will be released February 2024", wich is obviously passed. Similar things happen with a few other games. Are those games already released then, or were the delayed?
This video was made in parts over the course of months, so sometimes something I already recorded is phrased a bit off. Last Epoch did indeed release in February.
@@GamerZakh thanks for the clarification!
nice video
@@Welther47 The classic RPG section would be for you then, most of those are trying to do that.
Damn Zakh. That's a long list.
As much as I want a proper vampire RPG I have little to no faith VTMB2 will deliver anything of substance let alone hold a candle to the first game.
Guild Saga looks sweet
Crimson Desert resembles BDO, which it is... huh neat!
I had the video running in the background, and around @1:08:50 I hear "you're supposed to unite *whales* against the English [...] so it is pretty historical"
I had to switch tabs to double check lol.
It would be a cool game concept tho, uniting marine life to fight whalers and fishers. Kind of like the novel "the Swarm".
That's a lot of games to look forward to, jesus christ.
You should see how many I didn't list.
Subbed
Your vid is very awesome! Much thanks, such appreciation!
Hopefully New Arc Line will be less buggy than Arcanum was.
Gigguk makes game videos as well?
35:05 Dragonhold team please I don''t wanna ride a Dragon I want to BECOME ONE.
I just want to finish Unicorn Overlord and Eiyuden Chronicles before Refantazio drops lol
Haha keeping up with all the games releasing is a challenge itself
What is your fav first person (shooter) RPG game? I have always liked games like Mass Effect, Deus ex, Cyberpunk 2077.
in this list, can we find a game mmorpg too ?
@@user-ed2io2dg6i Not here but I'm working on a separate mmorpg list.
@@GamerZakh perfect tag for me
mmorpg - sandbox - openworld - isometric
Where is Trails through Daybreak and SMT V Vengeance?
You mean The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak? That released in 2021? 2023 on Steam. And Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance? That's just an enhanced version of the game that released in 2021. They're both old games.
very coool video
I would love to play an anarcho-RPG for once, where the goal is to bring anarchy into the world instead of order and monarchical rule.
For a change... you know...
A most magnificent list of abundance and greatness. Thank you for all the time and research in making this inspiring list of gaming happiness possible oh masterful GamerZakh friend to gamers the world over! ☕
Never forget how Bioware stole money and abandoned Anthem
Crimson Desert looks like something PA definitely could pull off. It's very far down in my list for worrisome games
There were plenty of examples in this video where the game was show gameplay without UI, and it was definitely actual gameplay 😅
UI is easy to show.
