"A dulcitone is a keyboard instrument in which sound is produced by a range of tuning forks, which vibrate when struck by felt-covered hammers activated by the keyboard. The instrument was designed by Thomas Machell of Glasgow in the 1860s, at the same time as Victor Mustel's organologically synonymous typophone,[1] and manufactured by the firm of Thomas Machell & Sons during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most of the early models are tuned to sharp pitch, or the diapason normal of a 435. Some of the late models use an action suspended on a system of leaf springs, which is considerably quieter than that illustrated." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulcitone
Yeah Kady! Really cool to hear about your approach and to hear how into sampling you are. They are definitely passion projects for a lot of us and it's amazing getting to share them with such a supportive community.... led by the talented, generous, and genuinely enthusiastic, Christian Henson. I'm looking forward to your future sample packs and to checking-out the music you're producing. Cheers!
Welcome back, Christian!!!! Such a great video. Great to see the interviews with Sage and Kady (and also to hear more about Evergreen State College which I knew only as the birthplace as Sleater-Kinney). Also: that dulcitone sample is gorgeous.
Finally got around to watching this after I received a surprise email saying my new sample library was ready you download. Thank you for using my music, and for the sample library. I was looking at getting that one anyway, so I guess it's time to write some music!
I can't thank Spitfire, LABS and all of the talented contributors enough. If ever there was an example of a gift that keeps on giving then it's all here.
Great seeing you back at it, Christian. I hope you had a good break! Such a pleasure talking with you the other day and it's so cool to hear your chat with Kady, too. Thanks again for the interview, the inspiration, and the good vibes! Cheers!!!
Eyyy, welcome back, Christian! Perfectly timed too, as this morning I came to your channel to watch your last videos before new years. Missed the rants and constant forceful search for inspiration. Your uploads keep me on track and keep my head on my shoulders! (Creatively speaking... So probably actually keeps my head in the clouds with the fairies or something.. I don't know..) Thanks for what you do, man! :)
Fazioli grand pianos are amazing, way more interesting instruments than modern Steinways. The concert grand has the option for a 4th pedal, which essentially lowers the hammer action so it allows you to play incredibly fast very easily. Wonderful instruments!!
Interesting, I use Reason and they did a great job about 12 years ago sampling a Grand piano, which I still use alot. I believe they where the first to use multiple mics and offer that as a Realistic sounding piano.
Really great seeing you back on RUclips Christian. I have been following you for a while and you have inspired me and taught me more than you could ever imagine. Because of you and the rest of the Spitfire Audio team, I ave not only followed my passion to be a composer but I finished my first score and the music director of a TV film just earlier today. I saw the premier of the LABS Glass Piano and got it the same day. I actually ended up using the Anthem patch on it for one of the scenes and it works soooooo beautifully. Thank you for all the incredible work that you do and what you provide to the media composer industry across the globe. Your resource are truly invaluable
Those interviews are a fantastic idea, absolutely loved them both! All recent Pianobook submissions are so damn high quality, hard to pick a favourite. I'm so proud of this community
Oops, I got distracted by the Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultra in the rack in the background there... Nice! Looking forward to some guitar tone shaping from Christian using that one day...
See you've ditched the huge monitor and added a UF8 now... Any thoughts on the UF8? Love your work Christian... you've been a revelation during isolation ❤🇦🇺
Dulcitone! There is a brilliant one I have used in a few scores in your Spitfire Sound Dust vol. 1. Just brilliant alternative to the celesta (and a proto-celesta). AKG c414 are my own favorite mics. Thanks for the pianobook highlights.
Hey Christian, I've lost access to my Pianobook & the email I set it up with. Thinking it's a long shot I can get back into it now somehow, maybe by just knowing the email it was set up with? I might just create a new account with the same or very similar user name if not. It should be evident I've not logged into it for a few weeks. Fantastic sounds, amazing community. Cheers! :)
4:00 in my family a mother and daughter were bidding against one another for something to gift the other. After a few rounds one of them actually suspected that and on called the other to confirm.
Hello Christian, is there any chance that you or someone at Spitfire could make a video (for idiots) to show how to use the mod wheel after the fact to automate dynamics in real time. I work in Logic and would really like to use both hands on the keyboard as I'm playing in the parts. I've tried all the videos on youtube I could find, which tell me to put it on Latch, but it still just records over my original midi performance. There's probably something switched off somewhere in Logic but I've no idea what that would be. If that video (for idiots) already exits, could you or someone please reply to this with a link? Thankyou.
That’s funny, just before watching your video, I’ve make a live composing session on twitch with this subject : « Writing a piece of music with only piano book sounds ! »
@@TheCrowHillCo Thanks. Hope to have a crack at some more concert grands this year that most people don't have access to... Oh, and if you get a chance, correct my name in the video's notes - "Dore" not "Kore". Thanks again!
I find it a little ironic that Kady talks about the cost of access to musical technology, but the Evergreen piano is only available in a format that requires a proprietary, non-gratis applicaton (Kontakt) to play it, rather than utilizing a format that would allow people to use it at no-cost (e.g. SFZ or DreamSampler). Maybe that will change in the future, but it's a common theme where people fail to notice the impact of certain products that they take for granted. Arguing against Kontakt format raises a lot of eyebrows, despite Kontakt really being fundamentally inimical to open access to the work of samplists. Oh well. Pianobook is still lovely, and so is the Evergreen piano.
Hey Paul, I absolutely feel your frustration with the high cost of entry into the Kontakt format. I've used it as the engine for my libraries because of the customizable interface and the ability to include your convolution reverb impulses, but I've been working on versions of the Evergreen suite for the completely free DecentSampler engine for a while. It's a massive project because there isn't full feature parity with Kontakt (and I'm not very familiar with DecentSampler from a development standpoint), but rest assured I am working on it and this piano (along with every other Evergreen library) will be available for DecentSampler soon!
@@skyscapeparadise Thanks for the reply. To be honest, I'm less concerned about the cost of Kontakt (though that's definitely an issue for some people) and more its non-availability in native form for the only computing platform I use (Linux). Will look forward to hearing about your progress.
What right do you have? Every right. What right does things which have already happened and gone have to control your activity? "But I want it to." That's you wanting, not it having rights. Constrain yourself ... if . . you . . want.
Christian... I presume all these recordings are made using PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) Samples not PDM ( Pulse Density Modulation) If the samples were PDM and DSD This surely would give a more ANALOG SOUND? Why not talk on DSD Sonoma and Gus Skinas.
When I’m talking to camera with my back to the rig I’m being micd by the two mics over the Dulcitone? They’re quite widely spread so if I move a bit the stereo spectrum shifts.
@@TheCrowHillCo that could have been it then. It pops out at me right away, even when I was watching on my phone. Vocals/voice over just sound very out of place like that. Either way still a great video and happy I pressed on :)

10:43 you just described Jeff Buckley’s famous guitar tone. A smaller verb into a larger verb. Makes it super lush.
That intro made me laugh so hard!
That theme at the end with the Celeste sound and the Dulcetone reminds me of the score for an Argento movie.
