Hey great video, i have grown many peppers indoors and here to give you some tips.
You can put seeds directly in hydroton? I've never used it. You started using Maxigro at 2 tsp per gallon? If your leaves were dark green then it was too much. You switched to flora micro? Where are the other 2 bottles? I think you need to mix 3 together. Next time use Maxibloom, its the only thing i use.
Each pepper flower has all parts needed to grow fruit, just gently shake them. I think what killed them was the roots needing more air and your nutrient mix being wrong. Good job keeping 2 plants alive in a small jar. That is a challenge

  • @spicymcspice9122

My best guesses as to why the plant health problems appeared:
1)Not giving the nutes a fresh refill as often as you should have. Pepper plant roots tend to take what they need and leave everything else behind. So if you see something like the nutrient solution not being uniformly clear with some white floaty things floating around, it might be time to flush everything out
    2) not enough air going to the roots. Maybe the water level was too high for decent air intake from the roots
    3) the root ball got too dense that they started choking eachother or denying water and air to eachother. I think this was the case and the best way to combat this is to prune the roots and then prune the plant as well to accommodate for the lack of intake it'll be getting. After pruning the roots give them a nice rinse bc it's kind of like cutting hair in the sense that there will also be lots of debris left in the root ball that'll drop into the water supply

No jalapeno microgreens. 😂 Two plants are probably fighting for nutrients from the reservoir. Peppers and tomatoes are self pollinating, all you need to do is tap the flowers or shake the plant a bit to make the flowers drop the pollen. Unless you want to cross pollinate then you would hand pollinate from a different pepper plant. Did you fill the container to the top? If so you may have been drowning the roots. PH is critical with fruiting plants like peppers and tomatoes so they can take up the nutrients properly. Ph should be 5.8 to 6.0 for hydroponics. At least you were able to get some peppers. Great job, I did the kratky radish grow with mixed results, they are still growing if you want to check that out! Will probably try it again a bit differently. 🌱

Kratky can be tricky especially for crops that take the full season to grow. From the video it looks like the demise was due to rootrot, wilting happens when roots cease to function :)
If you plan to grow another pepper i`d recommend a basic flood and drain bucket (no pump required) which i know you have the skills to make from your fogponic adventures. The longest i`ve had a pepper in the same bucket of hydroton is 5 years. the trunk of the plant was like an old oak tree. Being in a bucket you can place it outside in the summer so its super productive. When it gets cold outside you simply cut it right back and bring it in for the winter.

    • @brandonmakridis1565
      @brandonmakridis1565 3 года назад

Can you help point me in the right direction; what kind of flood and drain bucket doesn't use a pump? Unless you're talking about manually flooding and draining it multiple times a day . . . which seems too tedious and easy to make a catastrophic mistake that kills the plant.

      Hi Brandon
I only flood twice a day, morning and late afternoon. The trick is to locate the drain (15mm john guest tank connector) a couple of inches above the bottom of the bucket which creates a reserve for the plant to draw on.

    • @dennismac3466
      @dennismac3466 2 года назад

@@brandonmakridis1565 Drain into a tray/tub below the container. Use a bucket or cup to water. If you use a coco/perlite mix in the bucket, once everey 1-2 days is enough, depending on how big container and plant are, and air temps. Multiple times per day are totally unnecessary. For only a few plants, it is actaully easier that setting up return lines and a pump. Flood and drain in individual containers might also be called dutch bucketsIt works better than kratky for me, mostly because I fail to watch water level in kratky enough. Outdoors, I just water enough daily, or every couple days and let excess run off to ground. In cooler temps, I can go 4-5 days, and if you let excess drain to ground, if it rains, it flushes the media for you. After a few times, you learn how much to water to avoid most of the 'waste' . Another method for small spaces is simple containers sitting in a shallow tray of nutrient solution, with a media in the containers that wicks up enough moisture. Just refill the tray when it gets low. Something like a washing machine tray with sides 1-2 inches tall works to hold several plants. You may be able to go multiple days, maybe even a week using the bottom watering, and it is so easy to see the water level.

I think the roots had not enough airation, a common problem with the kratky method. Staying with kratky you could keep a lower water level later in the grow allowing a larger portion of the rootball to breath.
Considering nutrient concentration it is better to have too little nutrients in the water than too much, so you can slowly readjust the levels. Too much nutrients can cause abnormal growth with deformed flowers, leafs etc.
Also, like you said, seperating the plants early on into different jugs should help.
But very nice, considering you do this in your closet 😁

@@radnatalie another thing I just thought of, your plants might have experienced nutrient lockout (explanation: originhydroponics.com/nutrient-lockout/ ).
What you can do if you suspect this to be the case is, take the plant out of the nutrient water, wash the roots with clean tap/rain water, then change the nutrient water and reduce the nutrient level in the new batch.
I had similar problems when first growing tomatoes in an ebb and flow system.

Great video. It could have been the concentration. I'm sure you've studied the Kratky method. If I refill a container during a grow, I try not to go more than 50 percent to leave space for the air roots to get oxygen. Submerging the air roots will definitely kill the plant.

Biggest container you can fit in your closet is best. Once water level gets to around half full, try to keep it there. Add a little more nutrient solution to bring back to level at a time, rather than letting water level drop low and adding back in a lot. In a small container, that may mean daily. You saw how well it grew in the beginning, there is no reason it can't go on like that for a long time- nearly two years for a jalapeno. Every 3-4 refills, empty jar a fill back up to half full. Hard to do with big plant, but you can prune plant, or add a drain to the bottom or siphon out old solution if you can't empty with plant in place. Peppers are one of the best plants to grow using kratky method in my opinion. If you grow the right variety, you could have plant growing for up to 15 years!!!! And I thought plants that produced fruit were female but you keep referring to plant as 'he'

Can you point me towards info on this other type of air roots?
Why is it bad to add air after starting a grow? Vs adding it from the start?
Air should be added to keep oxygen available for the roots, especially during respiration, and to fend off anaerobic bacteria from colonizing creating those awful smells and root rot.
How are hard big bubbles beating on roots similar to aeroponics?
Aeroponics in my understanding was misting the roots and keeping humidity high while not disturbing the roots to aid in air root development to also increase root surface area. Air roots are very fragile in all my experiences and everyone I've seen on RUclips.

Just found your channel- realized I watch- listened, rather- to one of your other videos and I wanted to give you a couple of tips that no one else- IS going to "inform" you OF!
    1]
"Khang Star" is another RUclipsr who does a TON of "grafting" stuff but he uses "hydroponics" for a growing method. He does a LOT with explaining the "WHY'S" & the "HOW'S" of why to do things and why NOT to do certain things!
Idk if you "pruned" either of these- but NEXT time your grow a pepper plant- ANY type/kind, you should really watch a few of his videos and you'll get WAAAY more info than most [so-called] "gardeners" will TELL you!
    2]
When trying to figure out "how" to plant specific plants- a HUGE "tip" that goes a LOOOOONG way, is to research the "TYPE" of plant you want to grow- BEFORE you attempt to grow it...
THIS WAY, not only can YOU learn about the mistakes that others have already made- (so YOU don't HAVE to make the same mistakes before you learn the lesson-) but ALSO, so that YOU can get a better understanding of "WHY" specific plants grow the way that they do.
For a couple of examples to start with...
Herbs: have very shallow root systems and can be grown in literally- ANY type of "container" or "jug"- (I know bc I've tried- I've tried SOOO much crap that "other" "people" SAY- "you CANT do thaaaaat!"
.....ugh, IF I had listened to them- I wouldn't have the herb garden, that I have NOW- sooo... yeah!

    - does NOT "NEED a police investigation" in order to "view", what YOU ARE "viewing", "searching FOR"- (even if its a typo/auto-correct- its ALL, being "saved"/"monitored", btw)
    - does not "NEED" YOUR "permission" to "view" ANY THING YOU DO- through using the "Google" platform!
    Sooo... if you're wondering,
"Why the hell is something I looked up on "Google", showing up as "AD's" on websites I visit?....
..I'm sorry to tell you- but THERE'S👆 the "WHY?" and the "HOW does 'it' KNOW..?"
Every time you "research" something on "google"- take note:
There is ALWAYS, SOMEONE- trying to SELL YOU some thing!
"Google" is an "advertisers" platform- which, is what a lot of "people" ARE "figuring out" in between learning the lessons of "marketing"!
Through "googling" the "species" of plant and using the "species" of plant to learn "HOW" the plant grows-
I PINKY PROMISE YOU, that you'll figure out what you need to know.
    Regardless, I think you're doing FAN-friggin'-TASTIC, btw!

Drooping lol pepper plants like dry not hydroponics yes they grow but they do not like it to many bites use less way less it’s much more productive and safer for consumption use fresh water for at least 7-14 days before consuming it’s easy to harvest before it’s safe

looked like root rot to me. Try a lower water level, easier obtained in a bigger reservoir. Also aeration can help with preventing root rot, Pythium wont do as well in a oxygen rich environment. Well done anyways, hydroponics is a constant learning progress.

its really hard to grow long season crops in kratky... you can switch to dwc to allow for easier long term growth.

I am suffering together with that plant. It is a miracle that plant it even survived this treatment. Please, before trying "things" with plants, do your research. Starting with the importance of oxygen for roots.
