    I remember spotting the trains on the lorries as a child on the way home from school with my mum. Also as my dentist is by Northwood station we saw a lot of them there as well. I’m glad you posted it to youtube

    In London, they'll scrap a train for simply being too short.
    Meanwhile in Scotland and Wales, state-of-the-art horse drawn wagons are being deployed.

    • @RCT3Crashes100
      @RCT3Crashes100 3 года назад

      Meanwhile on the Isle of Wight, they were running the modified 1938 stock until they simply couldn't run any more! By the time the 484s were announced to replace the 483s, only two of them were usable, with the rest in various states of disrepair and repair. Credit to the engineers at Ryde, they kept the '38s going until the very end. I'll be quite interested to see how the Epping Ongar Railway goes about getting the two 483s they purchased up and running again.

      In Singapore, the train will be scrapped after over two / three decades of service or when refurbishment of the train failed. Some will be preserved.

    Sad, but informative film. When they start withdrawing a class of stock it's usually damaged/defective ones that go first, quite often stripped of components. Sad to see this unit actually arriving under its own power though. The older views of the pre-refurbed C stock brought back memories too. As time proved, not even the example very expensively rebuilt after 7/7 was spared the scrapyard. They should've kept that one at least.

      Unfortunately, you can't save everything but thankfully, a C77 driving car has already been dispatched to London Underground's Acton Depot for preservation, while two others are known to exist elsewhere in the U.K. Also Zorrays J, the Isle of Wight's 'Island Line' only uses deep tube stock being as these trains have to negotiate the rather low Ryde Tunnel.

      LongStripeyScarf three cars have been preserved... I think they are all C77 versions, as the C69's had issues with asbestos. If someone had the space and the funds then they could have preserved a 4 car train, this being the minimum sized train that could we used - although they nearly always operated as 6 car trains they were actually built to be capable of 4,6 and 8 car formations.

I guess to us who love trains & machinery they are not totally inanimate; I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been known to sit in the power car of a class 319 just so I can hear the sound of the electric motors, the electronic control gear and (when on overhead) the transformer.

      I'm not sure about the C stock but the A stock were scrapped without any being saved for a museum because they had asbestos inside their bodies and whilst it was safe 'at present' there was a concern that in the future someone would damage their bodywork - which would allow the asbestos to escape in to the air -- a real shame!

    Very interesting. I thank you for sharing this. Here in New York, there would have been some slight differences in the procedure. Primarily, the cars would probably first have been taken to a maintenance facility where they would have been de-powered and stripped of anything useful or hazardous, like batteries, florescent tubes, and window glass. Then they would be towed to the scrap track by diesel locomotive...there are a few vids of this...

    • @iandale3674
      @iandale3674 8 лет назад +1

      Also, those cars don't look very old....

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  8 лет назад +1

      The rolling stock was from the late 1960's.
      The disposal of the old trains was carried out by a specialist company. I suppose that it means that all costs were known in advance so should an issue arise then its for the company scraping the trains to worry about - not the transport operator.

    • @iandale3674
      @iandale3674 8 лет назад +1

      +citytransportinfo Thanks. yeah, New York is also trying to dispose of 1960s equipment. But we had some stuff from the 70s that was in even worse shape. As a result, they had to keep about 280 cars from 1964-65- the R32s if you've heard of them. Anyway thanks for recording and sharing this video!

    If you want the nearest 'tube train' station then its probably Stanmore.
    However if you just mean 'London Underground' station then you can see Northwood in the video - both right at the start and when the low loader lorry drives past it.
    This station is on the Metropolitan line and in Zone 6, but since this uses subsurface trains and not tube trains so its NOT a 'tube' station..
    I filmed from the footbridge just beyond the southern end of the station & a road bridge a little further south.

    In a month or so wholesale scrapping of the entire C stock fleet will begin, with S stock trains replacing them.
    This train was scrapped a little earlier after it was damaged in a way which needed expensive repairs before it could be used in passenger service again.

    Might not be the end of the line for this train as Viva rail have started to convert the old C stock trains into hybrid diesel electric or fully battery electric trains to be re used on smaller branch lines or routes where a large Diesel unit is needed across the UK.

      To avoid drawing attention to myself I turn off all sounds on my cameras and if the camcorders have lights that illuminate when I am filming I also cover them.
      It was not so easy in the old days as SLR and super 8 film cameras made noises because they were mechanical.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  4 года назад

      that dent on the doors was so severe that they were deformed and hence would not open, and as the trains were about to be withdrawn it was cheaper to withdraw this train than repair it

    7:59 to 8:18 I thought that the C - stock trains would be recycled rather than refurbished. They wouldn't get used on the tube because they are being replaced by S - stock trains.

    Regarding "DOOMED TRAINS" At one time in my life, I was a driver on "London Transport" buses, driving the 207 route, Uxbridge to Shepherds Bush. I was sat at traffic lights, just before the Ealing Broadway junction, coming back from Shepherds bush, when a load loader came round from my right, WITH A TRAIN ON IT!!! JUST MISSED ME BY ABOUT FOUR INCHES!!!! JUST IMAGINE "THE ACCIDENT REPORT" WHAT HAPPENED????? WELL, THIS TRAIN CAME AROUND THE CORNER!!!!!!!

      @CitytransportInfoplus  6 лет назад

      Trains often travel by road, I know its crazy but it is often cheaper and easier to arrange this way! Especially for irregular / one-off journeys.

    They should have sent them to the Isle of Wight, island line would have got another 40 years of use out of them. Come to think of it, island line are in need of some newer stock, their 1938 stock is getting just a bit on the old side - even by their standards!

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  8 лет назад

      +100SteveB alas, they are too big... the Island Line has a tunnel which used to flood and whilst steam trains did not mind too much this was not at all ideal for third rail electrification, The adopted solution was to raise the floor level and whilst this works it prevents full size trains from passing through the tunnel!

    • @100SteveB
      @100SteveB 8 лет назад

      Ryde tunnel, i knew about the size problem, but did not realise these were above the height limit. Maybe some 1970's Victoria line stock should have been earmarked for the island, that would fit in with their tradition of getting 'new' stock that had already been in service for 40, 50 years elsewhere. Sad to say, but without further ex underground stock of some kind, i cannot see much of a future for island line. I did hear talk of converting to trams, but at the same time heard that cost would be too high for that.
      I just hope something is sorted, and the Ryde to Shanklin line survives as a fully operational railway.

      Victoria line stock (67 Tube Stock) was specifically designed to be ATO trains, controlled by Coded signals from track level equipment, lacking such luxuries as deadman controls. Manual driving was at caution speed in "Shunt" or "Series" operation only.
      The similar bodied 72 stock which operated on the Northern and Bakerloo lines were externally identical in appearance but were designed for conventional operation, but were horrible machines, the Rheo brake could be very notchy and noisy, I prefer the EP brake from the 59s and 38s I have driven, many units didnt even accelerate smoothly

    Got any pictutures or videos of the Yellow Pages or Back the Bid C stock trains also any images of the oringinal square moquette that they had until 2001-03 when the spatter moquette took over.On the whole I will miss these trains they have been in service for 43 years and they've always been good to travel on even thought they get very crowded. RIP C stock :(

    They aren't really getting scrapped some D stock units were taken to be refurbished into class 230 trains, but in Hainault depot there's some scrapped D stock and 1972 and 1973 trains but those are unpainted versions which are hard to find (Idk why they are at a central line depot
    edit: they also got some other old trains from 1960 but they got graffited.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus

      I am baffled about the trains at Hainault depot, especially the subsurface trains as they cannot get to here - they are far too big to fit through tube train tunnels and all connections with the mainline railway have now been removed.

    One of my job's, in my working life, I am retired at 66 years, was a bus driver, for London Transport. I was sat in my cab, on the 207 route, a Routemaster bus, at traffic lights, when a low loader truck came around in front of me. No probs so far! On the back was a FRIGGIN' TRAIN!!!! IT PASSED ME AT, LESS THAN TWO INCHES!!!!! If it had hit me, imagine the accident report......WHAT HAPPENED? WELL, THIS TRAIN CAME 'ROUND THE CORNER!!!!!!! ALMOST EVERY WEEK, a car crashed into my bus, at a bus stop. I got so fed up, I transferred to The Underground, I THOUGHT YOU CAN'T FIND ME DOWN THERE!!!!!! WRONG! SOME DUM DUM DROVE THE TRAIN THROUGH THE SHUTTERS TO THE TRACK I WAS WALKING THROUGH!!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

    The worst unsteady footage was edited out. This includes a moment when the camcorder in my right hand almost completely lost sight of the train!
    I would have used a small tripod on the bridge parapet, but I was concerned in case I knocked my camcorder and it accidentally fell over the edge! One day I'll get myself a chain which I can attach to so that if this did happen I would not either lose it or pose a safety risk to anyone (or a train) below the bridge

      ND78S There's nothing like a good scrapping. The way they would probably scrap this, is to smash the shit out of the superstructure with a grab crane, and the bogies and frames would be sliced into small pieces with cutting torches.
