Object 140 was actually designed by Kartsev, the one who would design the T-55 and the later T-62. The Object 140 was basically what was supposed to be the successor of the T-54, but Kartsev realized that several of the design choices would have made it hard and expensive to mass produce and maintain while delivering little improvements in comparison to the T-54. He decided to write a letter to the Central Committee to recommend the rejection of the tank which was agreed without him being punished for having wasted 16 millions of rubles in the project. Instead, he started working on what would become the T-55. The tank wasn't a total waste of time because many of the ideas and solutions used in the Object 140 would be repurposed in the T-55 and T-62.
