- World heritage Shirakawa-go 撮影：201３年2月9日 日本の冬を代表する白川郷は五箇山と合わせて合掌造り集落として、1995年12月にユネスコの世界遺産（文化遺産）に登録。冬には雪景色になり雪深い里とで合掌造りの民家は、冬は外界から閉ざされたような白銀の世界に変わり、合掌造りの集落が 1メートル以上の豪雪に覆われた姿は、まるで水墨画のよう。 豪雪地帯特有の気候に対応するために生み出された先人の知恵や工夫が 今なお引き継がれており、日本の原風景が見られる。

A village community in Gifu Prefecture that was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its thatched-roof farmhouses in 1995 has been a tourist magnet for years.
As Shirakawago is located in a mountainous area, it gets a lot of snow fall.
Gassho-zukuri houses feature a unique architectural style designed to keep the forces of nature, particularly in winter, at bay. The houses, in fending off the heavy snow of this mountainous region are the prime reason people living in such places have been able to survive so long living in a traditional manner.
The Shirakawa-go has over 4m of snowfall in the winter months.
During this time the gassho-zukuri houses in Shirakawa village are illuminated for several days between January and February and these picturesque houses stand atop the snow landscape to fascinate visitors.

外部者が見ると、確かに夢の世界に見える。住んでいる人は、この壮大な住居を村全体で維持する努力が大変だ。最近では、中国人等の観光客がふえて、生活が脅かされているようだ。一人1,000円程度の入村料をとって、入場者制限をかけて、建築物や村の環境を維持しては？
