The premise and ending of HIMYM is based upon the novel "Love in the time of chollera by Gabriel García Márquez, which is Ted's favorite book. Florentino bows to wait for her and does for more than 50 years, and meanwhile he has a long list of lovers, just like Ted's tells their kids about all his hookups in his youth. Finally, when Fermina's husband dies he shows up at the funeral and proclaims his neverending love for her. She rejects him at first but then she realizes that she has done her duty as a wife and as a mother and gives Florentino another chance. I watched HIMYM growing up but just finished watching the whole show in order and I really don’t think any other show in the same vein has struck a chord with me like this one.
@@meep-hw1xp it doesn't make sense if Tracy were alive. Where the fuck was she in the Bob saget timeline the entire 9 seasons of the show lol? I think its a little goofy the way they got Robin and Ted back together, but I think I'd they had spent less time at the wedding weekend and more time with everything after, it would have played out well and no one would be mad The people who want the story book ending, just cut to black happily ever after - miss the whole perspective of the show. That's not ever what HIMYM was supposed to be. It was always about flawed characters making decisions that stuck with them, and the notion that things dont always turn out as expected - and that's just life. It can still be beautiful even if it doesn't go according to plan and often can be even MORE beautiful when things you didn't plan fall into your lap Tracy herself was NOT an important part of the story. She's just a face for "the woman I plan to spend the rest of my life with" whom was always unquestionably Robin anyway which as Penny so accurately points out that 'this was supposed to be a story about mom and you went back almost a DECADE before you met her....' Given the time to play that out properly, it would be a perfect show So yes I would have liked a few episodes of Ted and the kids dealing with Tracy dying, and set a tone for what life was like for Ted and Robin, individually as well as a couple, so that we could see that they were A. Still in touch B. Part of each other's lives, and C. Any reason particular reason why Robin would think it's finally gonna work with Ted instead of just "Aw he did a romance!"
Maybe a controversial opinion, but I watched a lot of HIMYM when I was younger, and Marshall might be the only main character I actually like and care about
I think a lot of fans might feel the same way. Personally I think Jason Segal is the reason the show kind of went off the rails at the end, but Marshall is hands down one of the best characters in the entire show.
While hands down Marshall is the best character, the only character I hate is Ted for being a complete idiot. I can't see the hate for lily, I know there a lot of it, but I've always had a celebrity crush for Alyson Hannigan. Especially as a horny teenager when American Pie came out.
My Favourite Show And The Whole Show Can Be Described In This One Sentence. Because sometimes even if you know how something’s gonna end that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the ride - Ted Mosby
This is what people don't get lol. It's SUPPOSED to be dark and sad and reflective of real life where not everything is tied up nicely with a bow. So disheartening that people can't see that. Glad there's a few of us
How I Met Your Mother is not a sitcom. It's a long con. I still feel robbed. I still feel cheated. I still feel deceived. I have never before seen a show get so very close to perfection, to absolutely NAILING the ending then DESTROYING EVERYTHING THEY BUILT FOR NINE SEASONS! Worst series finale ever, even LOST doesn't retroactively render the entire show's point redundant. If I could sue the creators for the money they made off the time I spent watching this show then I would because I don't feel they deserve it.
@@bryndone I overheard some of my family thinking of watching and I warned them off of it saying that of all the show's ever watched, this is my biggest regret. You know the biggest disappointment is that it's NOT a badly written show. In fact, it's a well written show and because it did such a good job of convincing us that Ted and Robin don't belong together (and that Barney & Robin & Ted & the Mother do belong together) for the majority of their show, they should have known that ending would be the worst decision ever.
I feel you brother I LOVE THIS SHOW but as i get closer and closer to season 9 on rewatches every time i lose a lot of interest because since we all know the ending season 7-9 just feels so pointless now and that SUCKS cause there are some BANGERs of episodes
@@ElvisRose_ That's a mentality I can't share; while for many people the ending is one of the worst ones ever, I would never say I regret watching this show nor would I tell other people it's a "waste of time" because the whole ride through those 9 seasons was pure gold
That 2008 writers’ strike was brutal the the show “Lost.” It happened during season the 4 and you could tell by the writing that there was heavy uncertainty behind the scenes. Huge bummer!
Narrator Ted is an unreliable narrator. I always took Barney's escapades (especially the ones earlier in the narrative) as wildly exaggerated by narrator Ted.
@@Keyh I think that's what makes the show work. The premise isn't a group of friends living in NY. The premise is a guy recalling his glory years. So anything unrealistic is probably just his exaggeration. It's brilliant, really.
I’d read that the Brooks quote started off with “Tragedy is when I scratch my new wristwatch.” Which I think works better because it juxtaposes the pettiness of a material loss with the supposed ‘comedy’ that involves, you know, someone actually dying.
These network (your local channels) sitcoms have to thread the needle and one of the hardest types of entertainment out. Needs to be funny, surprising, yet staying the same so the viewer will come back each week to check in with the characters they enjoy. The characters need to progress, but too much learning from past hijinks could be considered change and sitcoms are supposed to be comfort food. Something you watch at home and forget all the bad things outside and laugh at your television friends and the things they get into.
Though I can appreciate how the deleted scene could have helped bring it back around, for me the perfect ending is when they meet at the train stop and fades out with the song.
I've never understood the extreme hate for himyms ending. I understand it's a failure for having so many people disagree with it. But I don't think changing just the ending would have done any good without changing the whole series. 1) if they wanted to end it in another way they already screwed up by introducing the mother so late. The pilot was all about Robin, the series was all about Robin, so it makes sense it was all about Robin in the end. They already foreshadowed in the first episode when older Ted said "and this is how I met... your aunt Robin." 2) Robin and Ted both start with having very flawed, shallow, immature problems in their dating life, so it makes sense they could only be happy together later in life after maturing. 3) Ted never setled for his wife! She was unrealistically perfect for him and he loved her. But her dying is a methaphor for how realistically it would have been impossible for him to find that perfect of a person. It is a dramatizied version of a more boring story (realizing you don't really even know what's perfect for you + shallow details never count as much as you think + romance doesn't equal happiness). 4) Robin and Ted always had two main conflicts: ted wanted kids and robin wanted to travel and focus on her career. It's natural that when they are older and those and already achieved those things they would be a very good match.
I'm not mad that the mother died so quickly (even though I think they could have made a lot of great episodes with her) I'm just mad that we had a whole season following like 1 week. It just felt like they were killing time.
Loveeee and appreciate you guys giving us this honest love letter to HIMYM and appreciate you guys giving HIMYF its flowers too. It really picked up in season 2 and I’m confident season 3 would’ve been where they found the groove. I’m glad we at least got confirmation on one couple but really wish we could’ve seen the journey there.
I have youtube premium so I skip ads - you actually stopped me in my tracks with curiosity and I rewound it not just 2x but 3x to screenshot the code. That's s huge compliment from me 😅😂
Josh Radnor is a good man for saying they needed to cut a lot of stuff in the final season so that's why they cut that scene 😂 that last season was rough and I agree with you that scene changes the context in a good way
I really appreciate your view on RobinxBarney and RobinxTed! I've never understood how people can ship Robin and Barney, since their relationship was really messy, an annoying back ad forth plus a whole last season showing how incompatible they are. And that RobinxTed always have been more reasonable and logical love story when you keep the narrative of the show in mind!
Even though we all are aware of the heart breaking counting down episode.. I didn't realized that it ended on "Time Expired". Wow, that hits deep. Again.
It's hard to ruin a show with an ending, but this shows wrecked itself in the final episode. Also, all the incels who were watching the show to admire Barney's game, saw that just outwaiting and then grand gesturing, and the "female" obsession they have will throw themselves into their arms... 😢
My favorite episode, Season 7 episode 3 Ducky Tie is also written like a mystery, thriller or crime drama. The two on-going mysteries in that episode are what happened to Ted and Victoria after their unexpected reunion, and whether or not Barney spent years masterminding a plan to touch Lily's boobs. It was totally brilliant, and suspenseful every single scene.
The barney character never suffers the consequences coz thats how in reality it happens..playboys rarely suffer the consequences of their actions untill they see their lonelyness n suffer but then theyll go back to being a playboy or they get married but rarely have a happy marriage(They suffer the consequences much much later in life)
I think the writers were trying to show Ted’s second chance, just like how Ted was Tracy’s second one in a million lottery ticket. The writers should have blended Tracy and Ted’s story more to make it make sense. At least that’s how my brain interpreted it
I generally disagree with the assessment of the end. I do not view it as Ted “settled” for Tracy. I viewed it as he basically ended up with the life he wanted, as did Robin. Ted got to achieve his dream of building a sky scraper in NY, met the perfect woman who understood him without forcing anything, and got the 2 kids he always wanted. It was unfortunate the mother passed but Ted was always seeking love and a companion, after 6 years without it, he was finally ready to move on. Being a single widower in your 40s really doesn’t sound great. By that point Robin had achieved everything she wanted to as well in her career which was her main focus. They weren’t necessarily made for each other like Ted and Tracy BUT they were almost always willing to try and make it work for each other. Additionally, if Robin were to marry Ted, he never could have the 2 children he wanted. The entire story truly focused on Robin from day 1. It is weird to me that people thought the ending was farfetched. I will concede the ending was rushed… the made the final season go over like a 5 day span, and then the last 2 episodes went over the next 15 years. It would have been nice to spend some actual time with Ted and Tracy but the ending pretty from the start was clear.
@@Vetrarland appreciate it. I have always felt like one of the few whole actually appreciated the way the ending with Robin. The way I usually phrase it is. Sometime you meet the right people at the wrong time. That was the Ted and Robin situation. However, because of their constant friendship, they ended up being the right people at the right time.
This is for sure my favorite sitcom but my biggest problem with it is that they failed to make me like Robin. I think she's a terrible friend who rarely does thing for others but herself. She's so mean and yet the show acts as if she was the perfect woman. Everytime Barney or Ted do anything for her I was wondering "How can you love that person so much". If Robin was likeable, I would have been at least able to appreciate the ending.
Totally agree, she was never written as that funny(most of the humor surrounding her is derived from her job, personal history etc. not her own wit), kind or even that charming. She's written as this elusive femme fatale whom all the guys adore for no particular reason.
I'll never understand why great shows can't have the lead characters be in a happy relationship? This is a trope I see all the time in literally every show I've seen. But in himym you see lilly and marshal - perfect together and happy and it works perfectly still being funny. I understand himym couldn't stay on TV if he met the mother but in so many other shows - like gilmore girls or scrubs they can't be with the person they're meant to be with because the writers can't write a lilly and marshal situation
HIMYM is my fav show of all time. I watch it the same way Ted watches Star Wars. In sickness and in health, etc. And frankly I didn’t really like HIMYF… but I still really wish it was given more of a chance. I mean do yall remember the first season of The Office? It’s standard to tell new people to just not watch it. It’s a wholly different show from season 2 onward. And it just wasn’t as good as season 2 onward. It’s just not realistic to expect a long form show like a sitcom to be perfect in only one season. Especially with the shorter standard season length that’s so common now
The same woman who was working with a character who is so purely unlikable (they all are) to then going to make a movie that broke basically every box office record It's wild
Marshal’s character is totally off in season 9, I agree but saying the sitcom wasn’t interesting from season 1 and 2 was wrong. I enjoyed all the seasons except 9
Marshall is just like Tim Allen’s neighbor Wilson, minus the fence. Always there for Ted... well except at Ted and Barney’s most important moments. One of the best fraudulent friends!
Completely disagree it took HIMYM 2 seasons to find its footing. I’d argue seasons 1-3 are _easily_ the three best seasons. Once you get to season 4 it’s more up and down because it felt like the writers were trying to - this wasn’t really a thing then - but go viral. Or hit the zeitgeist. (Which started the back half of season 3.) It was very “stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen” There are still plenty of home runs in the first 64 episodes but way fewer strikeouts. Although the 7 episode run in season six (Glitter to Last Words then Oh Honey) might be peak HIMYM. But the other 16 episodes in six were ehh
The strike was not only great for every actor and employee of HIMYM having better residuals, benefits, etc. it also created a large moral boost which motivated everyone to make many more great seasons to come. Why shit on the strike, labor rights and well being of himym employees? for no reason… u literally said their return from the strike had the best ratings yet. Ur never gonna be a fox ceo, ur never gonna have a multi million dollar bonus at stake. Knock off the scab behavior it doesn’t benefit u or the fans.
I have one point that no one ever seems to make about How I Met Your Mother... the slap bet is the most toxic, abusive, and UNFUNNY long standing bit I've ever seen on a show especially the episode where they tie Barney down. I don't remember what supposedly obnoxious Barney did to Marshall but I certainly ALWAYS REMEMBER the supposedly adorkable Marshall assaulting his friend for years.
I found everybody on this show to be an annoyin douches, especially Ted's whiny ass. I found it funny that out of all of them, Barney despite his flaws was the most likable person I would foreal hangout with. Imo.
11:12 - FALSE. BArney is a great person, with amabdonment issues, coming from his father. This is a coping mechanism. "if i leave peoples first they cant leave me" - i have the same mentality from BPD.
@@zahrakassam2559 I know what modern means. The term retro applies better, as it's typically used for media 15-20 years old. Then vintage for 30-100. Antique for 100+. I mean, HIMYM is pre iphone! The world has changed SO much since 2005.
As someone who has never watched this because it looked unfunny and cringe... I thought watching this analysis may change my mind but it seems so mediocre still
A simple test is to listen to S Club Party by S Club 7. There is a part towards the end of the song - you’ll know it when you hear it … If you find it funny, you’ll like HIMYM. If you find it cringe or offensive, you won’t (Also if you have no idea who S Club 7 is you _probably_ won’t like it.)
the whole last season was so bad, but maybe i HATE IT, because i binged it on pandemic, so i just straight up wathec the whole season in like 5 days... it's very exhausting storyline, and poor script, i definally think that were thousands of ways to write and exacute the last season better...
I didn't watch this show during it's original run. I'm playing catch up through reruns, syndication and sometimes via RUclips. Two takeaways thus far : can't keep my eyes off Robin, played by the captivating Cobie Smulders. Secondly, I can't stand Ted. The most annoying character since Ross on Friends....
1:42 sorry, but you are completely wrong. In original quote it's "Ружье Чехова", which translates to Checkov's SHOTGUN. Anton Pavlovich was talking about shotgun. P.S. I know it's not the point.
i’m always so frustrated by people’s inability to enjoy art when it’s wrapped up in a comfort blanket-the sitcom. the entire show was about ted and robin. but she could not be the mother. and art reflects life. and life doesn’t get a happy ending, most of the time! it is a beautiful story and you have to realize it would make LESS SENSE for the show to just give the happy ever after. but life is not a fairy tale! and this story shows how you can make a beautiful life, and i can fall apart for whatever reason. cancer IS a real thing that happens! it feels really dumb that ppl feel this entitlement to a happy ever after and refuse to appreciate any other version. all that said ted is a huge jerk but that’s irrelevant to the point. edit: as seen in the video - “loss is a part of life”.

I watched HIMYM growing up but just finished watching the whole show in order and I really don’t think any other show in the same vein has struck a chord with me like this one.
They don't exist lol. Best show ever
What did you think of the finale?
@@meep-hw1xp it doesn't make sense if Tracy were alive. Where the fuck was she in the Bob saget timeline the entire 9 seasons of the show lol?
I think its a little goofy the way they got Robin and Ted back together, but I think I'd they had spent less time at the wedding weekend and more time with everything after, it would have played out well and no one would be mad
The people who want the story book ending, just cut to black happily ever after - miss the whole perspective of the show. That's not ever what HIMYM was supposed to be. It was always about flawed characters making decisions that stuck with them, and the notion that things dont always turn out as expected - and that's just life. It can still be beautiful even if it doesn't go according to plan and often can be even MORE beautiful when things you didn't plan fall into your lap
Tracy herself was NOT an important part of the story. She's just a face for "the woman I plan to spend the rest of my life with" whom was always unquestionably Robin anyway which as Penny so accurately points out that 'this was supposed to be a story about mom and you went back almost a DECADE before you met her....'
Given the time to play that out properly, it would be a perfect show
So yes I would have liked a few episodes of Ted and the kids dealing with Tracy dying, and set a tone for what life was like for Ted and Robin, individually as well as a couple, so that we could see that they were
A. Still in touch
B. Part of each other's lives, and
C. Any reason particular reason why Robin would think it's finally gonna work with Ted instead of just "Aw he did a romance!"
1hr+ of Nerdstalgic AND HIMYM?? Its a good day!
@Nerdstalgic you can understand his desire to branch out and do other stuff, he was great as David Foster Wallace
While hands down Marshall is the best character, the only character I hate is Ted for being a complete idiot. I can't see the hate for lily, I know there a lot of it, but I've always had a celebrity crush for Alyson Hannigan. Especially as a horny teenager when American Pie came out.
@@TheBaldr credit where it's due, Alyson telling Marshall that his dad died is the single best acted moment in that show
Marshal was the best!
My Favourite Show And The Whole Show Can Be Described In This One Sentence.
Because sometimes even if you know how something’s gonna end that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the ride
- Ted Mosby
Of course that’s a Ted Mosby line…
This is what people don't get lol. It's SUPPOSED to be dark and sad and reflective of real life where not everything is tied up nicely with a bow. So disheartening that people can't see that. Glad there's a few of us
I think the lows are every time Robin and Ted are together
How I Met Your Mother is not a sitcom. It's a long con. I still feel robbed. I still feel cheated. I still feel deceived. I have never before seen a show get so very close to perfection, to absolutely NAILING the ending then DESTROYING EVERYTHING THEY BUILT FOR NINE SEASONS! Worst series finale ever, even LOST doesn't retroactively render the entire show's point redundant. If I could sue the creators for the money they made off the time I spent watching this show then I would because I don't feel they deserve it.
HIMYM was my favorite show during its initial run, and after the Finale, I haven't gone back to watch a single episode. It just feels pointless now.
@@havelthedeadinside1799 Can you imagine how many of us would've tuned out after the very first episode if we'd known Ted does end up with Robin?
@@ElvisRose_ That's a mentality I can't share; while for many people the ending is one of the worst ones ever, I would never say I regret watching this show nor would I tell other people it's a "waste of time" because the whole ride through those 9 seasons was pure gold
LONG BUT A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED ONE!
That's definitely a nice way of looking at it.
@@Keyh I think that's what makes the show work. The premise isn't a group of friends living in NY. The premise is a guy recalling his glory years. So anything unrealistic is probably just his exaggeration. It's brilliant, really.
Why does this make me think of how he was deliberately trying to make Barney look bad so his kids are more supportive in his pursuit of Robin?
@@LadyJuse good point. I hadn't thought of that.
@@LadyJuse except he doesnt? Theres several times where Barney isnt "bad"
Im not the only one who never noticed that was bob sagets voice right?
I’d read that the Brooks quote started off with “Tragedy is when I scratch my new wristwatch.” Which I think works better because it juxtaposes the pettiness of a material loss with the supposed ‘comedy’ that involves, you know, someone actually dying.
thankful for this video i’ve been rewatching so much of the show and this analysis is awesome
58:30 I hate that reality. Things are so fast paced, you never get to slow down and enjoy the moment.
Gee, I sure hope that blonde girl from "How I Met Your Dad" found some work after the pilot wasn't picked up.
Marshall saying "I'm not ready for this" really resonates with me 😭😭😭
The fact that I just started a binge on this currently on season 6
Legendary
Though I can appreciate how the deleted scene could have helped bring it back around, for me the perfect ending is when they meet at the train stop and fades out with the song.
I've never understood the extreme hate for himyms ending. I understand it's a failure for having so many people disagree with it. But I don't think changing just the ending would have done any good without changing the whole series. 1) if they wanted to end it in another way they already screwed up by introducing the mother so late. The pilot was all about Robin, the series was all about Robin, so it makes sense it was all about Robin in the end. They already foreshadowed in the first episode when older Ted said "and this is
how I met... your aunt Robin." 2) Robin and Ted both start with having very flawed, shallow, immature problems in their dating life, so it makes sense they could only be happy together later in life after maturing.
I mean we also have to remember that this is a story being told by Ted we can assume Barney always wins or Ted just thinks he does
Man, I gotta disagree with your take on the slap bet, that was one of my favorite running gags in all of television.
Barney stenson is a my favorite character in How I Met Your Mother. He's great! 😂😂😂
Cool way to put other videos together!
I have youtube premium so I skip ads - you actually stopped me in my tracks with curiosity and I rewound it not just 2x but 3x to screenshot the code. That's s huge compliment from me 😅😂
One of the greatest...
Marshall's arc with Marvin dying is one of the most poignant moments of emotion during a Sitcom, on par with the Dr Cox park scene in Scrubs.
Even though we all are aware of the heart breaking counting down episode.. I didn't realized that it ended on "Time Expired". Wow, that hits deep. Again.
Please make a Video like this to the Office, really would like to see this
Coming Soon...ish
@@Nerdstalgic Nice one, i will be there🙌🏼
Let's goop
The barney character never suffers the consequences coz thats how in reality it happens..playboys rarely suffer the consequences of their actions untill they see their lonelyness n suffer but then theyll go back to being a playboy or they get married but rarely have a happy marriage(They suffer the consequences much much later in life)
Unlike Game of Thrones, the bad ending doesn't ruin this show for me.
I watch HIMYM every night to fall asleep. It’s my comfort show
OH WAIT ITS NOT A NEW VIDEO, NOT SO BANGER NOW
75 minutes of BGM... thanks
BGM?
Honestly the best description I've read
@@Vetrarland appreciate it. I have always felt like one of the few whole actually appreciated the way the ending with Robin. The way I usually phrase it is. Sometime you meet the right people at the wrong time. That was the Ted and Robin situation. However, because of their constant friendship, they ended up being the right people at the right time.
Realy good video, keep it up
Great video
LETS GOOOO BANGER
Hot take: I didn't actually find any issue with the ending.
It’s funny because I don’t really like the “best episode” at all and the “worst episode” is one of my favorites.
Wow, I didn’t know Sarah Chalke had two love story cliffhangers extended due to the writers’ strike.
i think still its the greatest sitcom ever created, despite the ending. nothing top its writing in my humble opinion
You know the show is good if that is your worst episode.
great video, maybe in the future cut the in video advertising out for future compilations
Howd you know I just finished a rewatch
I never noticed the countdown gimmic. Wow.
long form video 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
Anytime I show someone himym I show them slapsgiving 😂
HIMYM is my fav show of all time. I watch it the same way Ted watches Star Wars. In sickness and in health, etc. And frankly I didn’t really like HIMYF… but I still really wish it was given more of a chance. I mean do yall remember the first season of The Office? It’s standard to tell new people to just not watch it. It’s a wholly different show from season 2 onward. And it just wasn’t as good as season 2 onward. It’s just not realistic to expect a long form show like a sitcom to be perfect in only one season. Especially with the shorter standard season length that’s so common now
The same woman who was working with a character who is so purely unlikable (they all are) to then going to make a movie that broke basically every box office record
It's wild
Marshal’s character is totally off in season 9, I agree but saying the sitcom wasn’t interesting from season 1 and 2 was wrong. I enjoyed all the seasons except 9
Loved the show growing up but it has not aged as well as some other sitcoms from that era.
Anyone else throw up a little when he referred to Ted as "quintessential beta male"?
This was the last great sitcom, and arguably the best.
Marshall is just like Tim Allen’s neighbor Wilson, minus the fence. Always there for Ted... well except at Ted and Barney’s most important moments. One of the best fraudulent friends!
Are you serious? Did How I Met Your Father really get cancelled?
How I met your mother was a brilliant sitcom…. Until the final season
I loved this show but hated the ending.
No no no they held slapsgiving for the first time
I'm so glad How I Met your dad didn't work so Greta Gerwig could direct some serious banger movies.
They were on a break!
(Which started the back half of season 3.) It was very “stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen”
There are still plenty of home runs in the first 64 episodes but way fewer strikeouts.
Although the 7 episode run in season six (Glitter to Last Words then Oh Honey) might be peak HIMYM. But the other 16 episodes in six were ehh
Yeah only vid I've ever not liked is the slaps giving one. 1000% disagree, love this otherwise
I haven't seen this show in years but I'm pretty sure Ted was always a huge jerk
Nora was the best
