I was a big time Prince fan back in the 80s. That means I loved all “Prince related” artists. I also was just starting out as a radio DJ. It was so hard for me not to play songs like this and Jesse Johnson, they just were not “on the playlist.” But on occasion I could sneak one in on a weekend overnight shift. It is hard getting today’s young people to understand just what it was like back then to be black in popular music. They seem to think that lots of black artists weren’t “good enough.” They don’t understand that most black artists were never given the chance to be heard by pop music fans.
But would you say the black music that gets pushed to the fore now is really best of the best? I think it's sad that the freedom and inclusivity has been squandered, black people have created the entire DNA of popular music, rock, R n B, blues etc it's sad that what we have today couldn't even hold a candle to any of the stuff created between 1950 and 1990 and all that black people have done for music was during periods in which they were not treated as equals or with the respect they deserved. These days instead of bringing artistic integrity with attitude they just bring only the attitude.
I haven't seen this video since the year it came out. Maybe I didn't notice back then cause it was the 80s but in 2019, the vibe I feel is Michael Jackson recording at Paisley Park Studios.
Mark, I just wanna thank you for creating one of the most funniest bad ass epic and I hardly ever use that word, songs I’ve ever heard. I’m jamming the 12 inch digitally transferred from when I bought this way back in my ride. I’m playing your bass parts as best I can on the steering wheel. I’m feeling the shit. It’s like it’s stimulates you have to cellular level and I think even takes away years from you know I’m heating power in this!. timeless masterpiece! I’m serious!
This song is off his debut solo album "Just Like That" (1988)....So this was right after the transition of PRINCE'S band from THE REVOLUTION to the group he had after PARADE ('86) to SIGN OF THE TIME ('87)...So B.M. dropped this project around the time PRINCE had LOVESEXY ('88)....Also WENDY & LISA had " ARE YOU MY BABY"....and BOBBY Z had a solo album as well.....Life after PRINCE was good for the whole band during that time....way to go BROWNMARK...!!!
@@JTThomas82 yes she's played drums/perscussion with literally every big artist of the '70s & '80s....But ironically, she wasn't always the actual drummer on songs for which she appeared in the videos (like "criticize") -- she simply looks super-hott behind the drums in music vids
