i'm currently retraining my voice,... well i do every day but getting back into the REAL swing of things.. this video is super helpful actually and a great stretch for your vocal cords.... The advice you gave is top notch for real. especially keeping it light and just sort of allowing it
One thing I'm seeing is that when you start on the top note, the first note which is also the highest, your tongue is high up to give it more brightness, and it gradually lowers as you go lower down the scale. I think that that should be mentioned as well.
I'm a Male Soprano and the note you hit at 4:41 to 4:45 I harmonize above you! I love to sing in the 6th octave! I enjoyed your video! Keep them coming
This is very similar to what my classical teacher had me do this week! Really helps to clarify and a good guide to practice with. Awesome. Please keep the opera series coming, Freya. Love the content!
Hi Debbie wheeler., Have a wonderful day ❣️., Can I ask you something a favor with hug tight from you and support my channel to subscribe 🙂. Thank you and GOD blessed you always 💕🙏🙏
Well, I'm a soprano but I'm still learning on how to use my voice correctly, and I kinda struggle a bit because I just don't know what to do exactly with my voice, if that makes sense. 🤔
I'm learning too and maybe u need two find a teacher! Good luck! R u an opera singer I am singing it on my own from videos of famous opera singers with songs like Pie Jesu and Ave Maria and enjoy it!
as long as you have a stable job, you can do anything you want with your voice. The software will do the rest. And opera is dead anyway, so don't go there. just have fun for yourself with what you can do
Very good video. I'm a Countertenor and this help a lot I have a tendency to strain my voice. Nice to see good techniques to prevent me from damaging my voice.
I could reach high with the way you teach here. It's very helpful, thanks a lot! Would you give a talk about how to add vibrato when it's high at A5, B5 or even higher? This has been bothering me for a long time.
I tried this and my voice doesn't sound that great, really... But I think it's a norm when you don't get something from the first try. Practice makes perfect. Thank you for your lessons!
i’m in a chorus class and i have been for years but we have this opera solo we need to learn for mock auditions and there is a high f i just can’t hit without strain or running out of breath
Hi, Ms. Freya. I've been practicing any chance I get for months (I do admit that sometimes I won't get the chance for a week at a time but I still try to at least do warm ups and sing easier pieces)and really want to hit that E6(high E) at the end of "Phantom of the Opera" but still can't. I'm super frustrated. What makes my frustration worse is that I can sing every other single note up to that point. The sustained C6 (High C) just before hand is no issue. I try for the last note and it comes out croaky and squeaky and just absolutely terrible. It's maddening. It's like my voice is saying "Ha ha, you can have all the notes but that one" I have "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" and "All I Ask of You" (both also from Phantom of the Opera) pretty much mastered and they both have some high notes (although not that high). Any tips/ advice that would let me hit that note right off? I'm feeling super discouraged but I know there must be something I'm not trying or doing right. I relax all the muscles in my body, and do everything else that is recommended. I even spend at least 10 - 15 minutes warming up before attempting to sing. I can post recordings if you want/need. Thank you.
I've heard that the worse you can do is get scared of the note because it causes tension? Also, I can sing with vibrato but not straight toned. Is that normal?
Yup. I know for me, when I get scared of higher notes I cut off all of my air and close the space in the back of my mouth 😔 Oh! And about the vibrato: that’s good! Vibrato is a sign that your voice is nice and relaxed 😄
My goodness... the highest note she sang is almost too high for me... and I can sing quite a bit over the highest note in O Holy Night (soprano version, like really soprano. is it mezzo soprano? I forgot). I guess it's just my voice today. Also I never scream so I can't really relate to her. Was trying to find a vocal teacher to help me with my high opera, but everyone is so expensive. It's really a bummer to cause RUclips doesn't help at all.
Yep you are right Sara. Nice as these clips are, I found out you can't learn to sing from youtube. I think if you have had some lessons, these clips work well along side. why don't you ask freya for some Skype lessons.
when i try to do the exercises around 1:06 my voice keeps making clunking noises and sort of flipping. I also dont really have a head voice so that might be part of the problem! I just mix until I cant go any higher I never really change into a lighter free head sound I dont know why I just never have
Work out before you sing. Vocal tension can be your biggest enemy. For me, I had to be physically exhausted to undo the vocal tension I had become accustomed to when I sang. After undoing that muscle memory it improved my ability greatly.
So helpful. I am a dramatic coloratura soprano. my high notes have always been the same sort of thickness throughout my entire register, I felt after my Eb6 upwards it felt tense and really hard to sing all the way up to my highest note which is around an Ab6-A6. thanks so much.
my screaming voice sounds absolutely nothing like yours. I can scream high very easily and without much effort but it doesn't sound operatic. How do I make that sound operatic.
Oh that clarifies everything! For me singing with vibrato spin etc is nothing like screaming. It feels really different. But I have an easy Loud sound as well that also sounds like a scream. I use it to call my dog at the beach etc. When people have talked about controlled screaming recently I though they meant something entirely different to the way I normally sing high - ie more along the lines of the way I Call my dog. From your opera videos which I just found last night, I realized I'm actually going alright up in the high range after all. I've been in such a world of confusion lately and you've really helped me clear all that mess away. But I have a teacher and its to do with him teaching me the middle voice and bla dal. Thanks Freya.!!
Appreciate that you, yourself, sing soprano, thus the title "soprano edition to distinguish it from your other oh... no other editions. Ah. Were you intending to add other editions either from yourself, or collaborations with others who have different ranges ? Meanwhile, I'll watch this one anyway. I may never get a 7 octave range but maybe my falsetto and flageolet might benefit 🙂
How do I do this and avoid breathy falcetto (for sopranos)? I've seen your videos on falcetto but you don't explain how to do chest voice when all you can achieve is falcetto.
it's not full operatic sound, it's some type of head-whistle. Easy to do, but useless for any operatic repertoire. It's just not going to be enough this sound
No, no, that's not a real opera. I can clearly see your tongue going up while singing high wich means your throat is getting closed. That's wrong and it couldn't be fully heard on big stages without microphones. Your musical singing is pretty good but for the operatic it needs a lot of researching. Nowadays there are a lot of stereotypes about operatic singing like singing in the mask. The chest voice is the real clue to achieve the satysfying effect. Not the light and flat head voice without any support which is wrong and sadly prevailed by many singing teachers.
Freya Casey I appreciate :) Many things you say are very accurate like released jaw etc. because many teachers reccomend spreading and showing teeth instead which gives flat sound without power. I didn't agree with the way you show high sounds. Probably it's the matter I'm really in love and admiring towards old singing school in which is saying that super high notes shouldn't be thinner that middle register and still opened and released. I can reccomend listening to Luisa Tatrazzini. She was also found a light lirico soprano but despite she had a strong chest support. And sang for 200-300 thousand people without mike. I still respect your work and watched more videos that impressed me with your knowledge about many more types of singing. :) All the best!
I'm a male soprano,my range was B1-B5,but I still struggle to sing Opera song like sempre libera and the magic flute because I'm used to sing pop song.I found that I can't go higher when I was singing classical song, what can I do in order not to damage my Vocal chords?
