- John Wesley Hardin - the Old West gunfighter who not only faced down Wild Bill Hickok but also gained infamy for (allegedly) shooting a man merely for snoring! Join me as we examine both of these incidents, as well as Hardin’s encounter with the Bloody Bender family of Kansas, the time a belt buckle saved his life, and the lead-up to the infamous Sutton-Taylor feud. #wildwest #history #western

Whatever you do don't start snoring...
Love what your doing bro, complete wannabe here, i'd love to help you in any way i can free of charge.
It's hard thing Josh, so far i haven't pulled that revolver outta the night stand but the racket from the dang Ol' Woman ... 💥
Poot,poot..
I love how if you went back you have already decided to go whoring and get the clap hahahaha
Hey there pilgrim just wanted you to know I love the podcast and appreciate the work you put into your content.
Another excellent episode. A sweet little trip down memory lane for me. That JWH snoring story was my grandfather's favorite. Don't know how many times us kids would gather around for story time and would be treated to this one. He never tired of telling it & we never tired of hearing it. He was quite the teller of wild west tales.
I bet he could tell it good
I don't believe for a second Hardin backed down Hickock in any shape or form, I think Hardin was a little in awe of Hickock and resorted to telling some tall tales which others at the time may have believed and this helped "corroborate." his tale.
Wild Bill, one of my favorites. As always another great episode
Much appreciated
Your hard work and enthusiasm in the episodes is much appreciated also. And the fact you took the time to answer an email asking advice about stopping the 🍺 waterfall ..
I've tried to do this several times but it's always a problem. Know it's not much with things the way they are but just a thanks for the very entertaining videos. History lessons and humor. You always reply to my comments and that means something too. Thanks!
Wow thank you!!!
This series is shaping up to be one of the best so far, thank you.
Glad to hear it! Thanks!
My ex wife is a Hickok descendent from her Mom's side. A picture of her great grandmother shows the resemblance & gambling runs in the family & my ex mother inlaw was not a good gambler. I've always reminded our daughter & son & now the grandkids that they are related to Wild Bill
Very cool
Been waiting for this one! Im out in the cold windy plains of wyoming getting supper on and listening to my favorite podcasty thing. Thanks!
Stay warm
Oh buddy i live for this style of content, i predict in the near future people like me and you are going to produce some of the best Westerns of all time.
I am glad I found this channel. I am a bit of a history nerd and I find early American history very interesting. Your way of telling the story is both informative and entertaining with a smatering of comedy thrown in for the lols.
Glad you enjoy it! Welcome aboard!
Josh, another good story from you . Can’t wait for the third episode. Just between you and me Hardin getting the drop on Hickok was just in John’s mind. Heck nobody new that story until 25 years after Hickok was assassinated . Keep up the good work!
Very possible
Enjoyed this as usual, great to listen to another wild west extravaganza story👍✌
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great idea for a vid! You should keep doing them and then do a huge final face off type video at the end with one final victor. Maybe rate them in order somehow. That would be awesome ha!
Thx again. Always appreciate the time you spend digging through history to get the truth
I appreciate you listening!
Wow, awesome episode! It's so interesting to think the Bloody Benders might have had John Wesley Hardin as a victim. It was Laura Ingalls Wilder whose father helped hunt down some.of those murderers, what a posse that would have been had it includes Charles Ingalls and John Wesley Hardin. But for a simple.matter of what was no doubt a relatively short period of time.
McMurtry would have loved these podcasts. I was reading the Berrybenders narratives when I was recently informed of his demise and took it like a baby. Meticulous research and the love of the old west is something that you two share. Thank you kindly.
I need to revisit those books
@@WildWestExtravaganza McMurtry didn't pull any punches in his tragedies, just you there is no candy coating, which your followers appreciate.
Imma gonna listen to this tonight.
Josh you have continued to entertain. This was a real humdinger! Have always been most fascinated by the gunslingers. You do them a great justice, with your style, delivery and humor(as I am sure they had IRL.. or not)! Thanks, We're still a listenin', you keepa talkin'... never change dude.
Thanks man
Another fascinating episode Josh. The myth of Hardin and Hickock is certainly controversial.
Yes sir
Please do one on Bonnie and Clyde. I know its not the wild and west. but you can add so much more to your stories. There is also SGT York in WW1! 82nd all the way! People need to hear this history. As a combat vet myself and a fellow historian, I would love to help you narrate this . There are so many people in history that you could talk about. You are so good at doing research. Shit you can talk about president Theodore Roosevelt and the ruff riders. The only president to get the medal of honor. Also how he took a bullet in the chest and still continued a one hour long speech. The sky is the limit of how many badass people who lived in our past. Id love to assist you in these endivers.
I think I probably will one day
@@WildWestExtravaganza I'd never pretend to give advice to my absolute favorite podcaster, but if this full time thing works out, might be a good opportunity to do a second channel. TONS of good stories from that rural gangster era.
@@jonahhex8178 I would LOVE to and I hope to one day but for right now there's just not enough hours in each day
@@WildWestExtravaganza yeah, I feel you, brother!
@@WildWestExtravaganza besides, you still ain't done my heck Thomas episode! ( Sorry, tried not to but I couldn't resist 😞)
For some reason, I find that the birthplace of John Wesley Hardin and WWII general Dwight D. Eisenhower being pretty close to each other very interesting! Eisenhower was born in Denison, Hardin in Bonham like you stated at the beginning....🤯
Love the channel and I also love the guidelines info before leaving a msg well done Sir well done
Glad you like them!
LOVE THE STORY !! YOUR NARRATION IS ON THE MARK !! LIKED 👍 AND SUBSCRIBED 👍👍
Welcome aboard! Thanks
Your my favorite non robot narrator.
If you travel back in time take some protection you don't want to catch the "clap"!
I listened to this on spotify today. Awesome episode!
Glad you liked it
ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz snort snarf snark I'm awake I AM AWAKE!! lmao good job Josh I always enjoy the way you tell the stories
Ha thanks
Ty 😊
Great story
Love it.
Great narraration 😊😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
20 bucks at that time was a 20 dollar gold piece worth 2000 dollars today so the 600 dollars would be 24 ounces of gold worth almost 50 thousand today
How by your statement there would be 30 gold coins in 600 dollars. If 1 is worth 2000 dollars shouldn't it be 60000 dollars
Oh very much thank you "Jolly Foul-mouthed Josh" for this comment on snoring - my wife also listen to your episodes and have now many "ideas"... 🐎🐎🐎
Sleep tight
All I gotta say is … we damn Texans. Love this Republic!
The most plausible scenario would have been that John Wesley got the drop when he witnessed Hickok approaching him...not knowing Hickok's intentions? As far as an "actual" draw? Ridiculous! Both, were smart enough to know the others speed and capabilities. Doubt that it ever happened but some patron over exaggerated it to the newspaper man that sold and even more exaggerated version to a dime novel writer for a few buck$
There is the scenario where, "supposedly", Hardin got the drop and laughed at Hickok stating; "I could have got'cha, Bill!" Bywhich, Hickok laughed and said; "Guess you did, John!"
Again...Hickok probably wasn't even thinking about drawing down on Hardin. Hardin was the more worried one...
Guessing neither wanted to die for some rich rancher's $
You have the best voice. Your stories are wonderful. TY
Wow, thank you
Wait… slide show photos!?.. how longs this been goin on!? Me over here with my ear buds in while framing houses like a sucker
Ahh nope.. never mind😂
Keep your earbuds in haha
Usually the one that feels the need to talk about it is not the one who had the upper hand.
My great aunt was seeing John Wesley Hardin when he was living in Pollard Alabama. She was from Damascus Alabama near Brewton Alabama!
Very cool
Leon Metz did write an excellent book on Hardin. 👍
Yes sir
It would have been fascinating, but dangerous, to have had a chance to interview John Wesley Harding.
Ha yeah
Bravo Josh!👏 Perhaps you could get a "gofundme" page for the Delorean?!? 🤣 🤠
I got into a lot of school yard fights for claiming that Wild Bill was my great great Uncle because my mother wouldn't lie . After researching this as an adult I found she told the truth, however it wasn't by blood, Emma Hickock the great equestrian was my mother's great great Aunt by blood. Wild Bill's adopted niece.
That's a pretty cool connection
No way did Hardin back down Hickock while his eyes were still good. Hardin was a wild buck and if he thought for a minute he could take Bill he would have tried.
I think about the way that the government overreaches now how cops just randomly finds people abuse them and gets away with it. Men like these would never allow such things
I dunno, from what I've read there was way more overreach back in those days. A lot of people were killed while "attempting to escape"
TV docs are dead....who needs shitty re-enactments ( said the guy who did that in tombstone)....long live well researched audio content.
There are still some great docs

@@WildWestExtravaganza it was a hoot Josh!
If you find that time traveling Delorean,be sure to stop by and pick me up I want to go with you.
Deal
The way I see it, if a grown man stalks a 14 year old child, that makes one a criminal.
In all fairness, Hardin was still just 18 years old at the time - not saying that makes it right but yeah, I know what you mean. Now his second marriage - oh boy, wait until you hear about that one!
The story of Hardin getting the drop on Hickock with the border roll never had much of a ring of truth to me. Hickock was already famous at the time and Hardin was becoming famous. People would have know about one or both men in a rock star sort of way. Had that happened in front of witnesses, it makes sense that it would have been the talk of the town. Maybe it would even made the paper. With the incident being unknown until 1890 by Hardin's own mouth, makes the story a little fanciful. I just couldn't imagine sitting in a saloon, witnessing this incident, the going about my business. Me and my buddies would have talked about it and I'm sure everyone around would too.
I tend to agree
Can you do videos like if Billy and Hardin had a shoot out
Just depends on who got the drop on who. Billy was smart and fast but Garrett got the drop on him. Hardin was tough and mean but Selman got the drop on him.
@@WildWestExtravaganzadon't know that I've ever heard it summed up more succinctly.
Hold on, need more snacks!
I have scoured every known resource to substantiate the "snoring" incident (since age 15), and aside from a newspaper article (Abilene Chronicle Aug 10, 1871), alleging that a "Wesley Clements" aka as "Arkansaw", fired four shots through hotel room wall striking a John Cougar (who was allegedly sitting up in bed reading), and killing him (no mention of snoring)...and still haven't found a credible source, either. Safe to say that the actual truth will likely never been known...on that subject. Metz released his book in 1996, a year after RC Marohn released "The Last Gunfighter: John Wesley Hardin". Marohn was a child psychiatrist specializing in juvenile delinquency and narcissistic disorders. His book was primarily a 20c version of psychoanalyzing a 19c man. Metz was doing the same with his book. Lewis Nordyke "John Wesley Hardin Texas Gunman" 1957, is another source on Hardin. Less 20c perception/opinion/psychoanalyzing. All in all...Hardin was no doubt influenced by the times in which he lived. As were many others...known and unknown. 🙂👍
I feel confident had he challenged Bill Hickok he wouldve been lucky to walk away.
Maybe
You might also read "Richland Crossing".
Now goddammit I thought what Hardin used on Hickock was called the "road agents pass" & the "border roll" was when a cowboy switched his loaded pistol to his dominant hand while simultaneously holstering or switching the empty one to the other hand. Correct me please...
Anyone else find this channel because of red dead redemption 2?
Possible that’s why the algorithm showed me this channel but I’ve watched probably 10-20 already in about a week or two😂
I don't believe that the Hardin/Hickock confrontation happened because if you carry butts reversed when you re-holster your pistols you will eventually perform the border reverse in reverse, I think Bill would have been suspicious of being handed Hardin's pistol butts reversed.
Holy Hickok! Great episode!
Gracias
Just how much rust was on that revolver at 0:17 ?
Wes would have us believe that Hickok had never seen the trick and was so impressed that it shook him.
I'm not sure that Hardin wasn't the inventor of the trick.
Great series
Thank you
Your narration sounds like a Kenny Powers history lesson 😎
Tuned the fuck in
Heck yeah
Do one on Bill longley the only man I ever heard in Texas that was more of an outlaw than West Hardin and as a matter of fact he had a higher reward on his head. And the little man said with West Hardin being the second most deadly man in Texas they believe that bill longley was the deadliest.
I did, if you scroll down you should be able to find it
Hardin left Abilene fast one night after killing a hotel patron,to soon closely to be followed by Hickok the next morning &is usually considered why Hardin never returned there.
It's almost like being a cowboy was the original "roughneck" trade.
I can see the similarity
Lol, if been both, plus a grunt jarhead@@WildWestExtravaganza
The facing Hickok down story is BS, he ran as soon as he thought Hickok maybe coming for him not even waiting to get his boxer shorts on.
Great story narration as always...reckon I could have taken Hardin...
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m with you the truth lies somewhere in the middle
Cool. 👍
Thanks!
Fabulous.
Josh, those aforementioned "cougars" don't mind taking a shot or two. Just be sure not to get any in their eyes!
Another thing is I don't believe while Bill Hickok shot anyone with a pistol at 75 yd. Anything beyond 60 yards would be pure dumb luck. And gunfighter considered himself proficient in a gunfight if he can hit a man at 20 yards. John Wesley Hardin also stated that no one including him could pull pistols faster than wild Bill Hickok. What is not well known as there is also a deputy with wild Bill Hickok and he had both barrels cocked and aimed at John Wesley Hardin. Pardon would have to be one of the bravest men that ever drew a breath that's why I think probably half of his story is a myth.
Your assessment about Hardin's recklessness about shooting that man for snoring seems most likely.
I think what Hardin said is bull , any man who fought a bear with a knife and won I don't think would be scared of a young kid.
True but then again Hickok told quite a few whoppers too...including that bear story
Late, talking to the wife, but I here now.😊
She can listen too
@@WildWestExtravaganza she's a travel nurse, she does listening between patient.
That's a good job
My ex-wife was a travel nurse and travel cheated. If I was Hardin, they'd both be dead.
@@mitchdroese84 we don't have that problem, till I retired we both traveled alot for work.
John was a pathological liar, we can't take his word, this was when Bill was in his prime, so I don't think John tried to get on Bills bad side
It was known as The border row but it was more commonly known as the road agent spin.
I always thought abilene was in Texas or is it abilene Kansas so did he leave abilene for abilene or some other place in Texas that wasn't abilene? Asking for someone that doesn't live anywhere near a place called abilene.
There's an Abilene in both Texas and Kansas. The one referenced in this video is in Kansas.
Abilene Tx was actually named after Abilene Kansas and did not yet exist in the 1870s
Thank you, if your busy tomorrow also I understand.
Huh?
Hardin was amazing with a gun. THAT my friends is a fact.
John Westley got the drop on Wild Bill, he had to buy him a drink, smart move
Hell yes!!

Hello, wild west extravaganza..have you got any history, on most of these outlaws, children, or their wives. If they had any. Of whatever, their children became of ?. Just wondering, where they outlaws. Also ?
Hickock probably a more accurate pistol shot, but Hardin probably a little quicker on the draw...so I call it a draw...🤔👍
I'm a descendant of John Wesley Hardin.
Very cool
Bill lived by a code of respect, so do you think he let a young man violate that? I don't. 🤠

Wild Bill was a very handsome man, it’s funny but he looks like he could be brothers with that wwe wrestler named Val Venus 😂😂could just be me. lol had to tell somebody that and nobody in my family is interested in wild West stuff
It's all true. Just the way you told it.
I would say the incident never happened but the truth be told hardin is the only man that walked around Abilene with his guns on. however when he shot a drunk even though he was armed because he did shoot the man he ran out of town because he knew wild Bill would be after him. The man you back down coming after you shouldn't scare you so much. But one thing is for sure walking around Abilene at the time with guns on was illegal yet Wes did it.
It wasn't just wild Bill there was a deputy that that had a double barrel shotgun. He did claim that hardened on the road agent spin and that both men kept their guns pointed at each other and he said wall bill with a shot him even with a reflex action if Hardin head shot him 1st. The deputy also said I would let him have both barrels and I reckon he knew that too. Supposedly according to him they both put their pistols up at the same time and then they went and had a drink.
What's the deputies name?
josh, how many of these guys you've done stories on knew the others? where was bass reeves during this? none of those badass texas rangers ever went looking for hardin?
also, a few of the old west towns had a no gun policy. but that goes against the 2nd amendment. did people not care about that back then? would hickok have given up his guns if he
was traveling thru one?
oh, and is there anything more about the horse, bob?
not that I'm aware
Eventually, it would be a Texas Ranger who arrested Hardin. However, in the years directly following the Civil War, the Rangers were decommissioned. They wouldn't be reinstated until 1873. Before the Rangers, you had the Texas State Police but Hardin usually got the upper hand.
As far as the gun policies go, I don't think it was so much that people didn't care about the 2nd amendment as they considered it a common sense type of law. In many towns, you were not allowed to carry a sidearm within city limits but outside of town, you could carry as many as you wanted.
I don't know if Hickok ever handed his guns over when he entered such a town or not, but I doubt it.
@@WildWestExtravaganza ah. wondered why you kept talking about the TSP, but didnt say rangers. learn something new every day. thanks josh!
@@tooslow4065 No problem! I'll be expanding more on this next week. Hardin would end up having more than a few clashes with the Rangers almost as soon as they were reinstated.
Ben Thompson would not go after Hicock probably for political reasons because from what I've heard he's a gunman second to none that Texas has ever known.
Although wild Bill Hickok had criminal action his past and probably should have either been hung or received a large prison sentence for the McCandless I say that because think logically that was a different world but even back then no one would bring their 12 year old son in the middle of a gunfight. Even so John Wesley Hardin backing down while Bill Hickok has to be taken with a huge grain of salt. When asked one time who the most dangerous man he had ever met was John Wesley Hardin replied while Bill Hickok is no one's little sister that's for damn sure. No one would bring their 12 year old in the middle of what could be a gunfight and three armed men and not a shot was fired even in the air. Also at least two of the men were hacked to death with a hoe after being shot by Hickok. A lot of people forget this but supposedly they even tried to chase the 12 year old down and probably silence him.
In response to your question about what we think, I believe you will die of the clap after time traveling
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Of course you don’t think you’d marry off your daughter at 14 because food is cheap and easy to find THESE DAYS but if you had to hunt or WORK as hard as they did back then you’d be praying from the day your daughter was born for someone to relieve you of that excess burden…boys on the other hand could provide you labor to make up for their consumption of food & other necessities. You probably also think you wouldn’t own slaves 😂 but TIMES were different then
Her father owmed a store...Hardin gambled all day. These guys weren't exactly out in the wilderness hunting rabits with spears just trying to stay alive lol.
@@WildWestExtravaganza Same time period….same mindset! They’re called SOCIETAL STANDARDS which change with every new generation. Girls are fertile at 12 and people used to only live till they were 40 when they were serfs vassals & slaves not just a generation or two before them. Read more books on history so you can have a better overall context of what nonsense your speaking. When science extended our average life expectancy ONLY THEN did people start developing their protection standards with regards to sexual activity IN GENERAL! Why did everyone wear powdered wigs…STD’s There was NOTHING to do back then…drinking & F’ng are a historical constant….BUT age is a recent consideration of our current century
