When I was around 7 years old, my family had a pit-bull. He was a sweet dog, but pit-bulls are NOT family animals whatsoever. He could be very vicious which was just his natural instincts. But, those instincts can take over if they're around other animals or children. Even if you raise the pit-bull from a puppy, it doesn't eliminate the risk.
You are totally right. I have pit bull mixes. I trust them 100 percent around myself, boyfriend and daughter. I do NOT trust them around anything else. I have double doors on both ends of my house that they would need to get through.

As a Missouri resident I wish this breed was completely banned statewide. In some cities they must be registered with a yearly fee, in others they out right banned. The grey areas are when people live outside city limits where these rules and leash laws don't apply.
