  • @ckr430
    @ckr430 4 года назад +7

    You are very knowledgeable and I hope you would be able to answer my question about using the SPD-30 in a live setting. The issue I’m having is while playing acoustic drums with a band I want to add a percussion loop. I’m using a foot switch to use pad control. I play the pad for “tap tempo” to establish where I want to set the loop. After 4 or so hits I strike the pad to start a “loop”. This is where the problem is. It appears that the tempo is set. But the click starting point is slave to where the “tempo indicator light” is blinking. Disabling the the indicator light does not resolve this issue. In other words, the loop doesn’t start on the down beat most of the time. It’s off by a 16th or an 8th. Thanks for your thoughts

    • @TheHybridDrummer
      @TheHybridDrummer  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! Before starting to record you are not using another click from a different source, right? You play without a click before looping. Do you have quantize on? Because that might pull your notes an 8th or 16th off

    Thanks for the very clear review! I'm still undecided on which one to buy...maybe both! Also looking the Alesis Strike Multipad... one question, on the SPD SX, do you know how many layers the samples can have when sampling in external sounds? I know that the Alesis Strike only has 2 layer samples, so I imagine that when doing drum rolls it's gonna sound quite 'machine gun like'... is the SPD SX any better in that aspect do you think? Thanks again! :)

    • @TheHybridDrummer
      @TheHybridDrummer  4 года назад +2

      If you use the SPD-SX as a midi controller with Superior drummer for example, you can very dynamic samples with the software. As for uploading external sounds to the module it uses only that one sample and reduces and increases the volume according to your playing. It works well, but you probably won't get a drum roll as sophisticated as on an acoustic.

      @@TheHybridDrummer Thanks for your reply! Ah ok i get it...use as a midi controller for better dynamics! So do you think the SPD30 octapad is better for a more realistic drum sound and feel then? Thanks!

    • @TheHybridDrummer
      @TheHybridDrummer  4 года назад +1

      @@ChrisDeJuanMusic It could be better, because that works with different samples for the different dynamics of the same sound. But you need to try and hear it with your own ears I think. That way you'll be able to decide.

    Can you record quantisation in both the pads (will it correct the timing for you when playing a loop?)

    • @TheHybridDrummer
      @TheHybridDrummer  3 года назад +1

      The octapad can record with the notes quantised, yes, and I think that's a great feature. The spd-sx can't record loops, only if you go to the sampling menu and with the perform and record function you record something that you play on one of your spd-sx kits, then save it and set it to loop mode. But that won't be quantised.
      I hope it helps!

      Hi! In this video I pointed out the main differences, so hopefully you already have a basic idea about both devices. As for a better practice experience I'd consider the choices between the Octapad and the SPD-SX PRO now, because the PRO let's you use a hi-hat controller too. I really liked the 2x4 pad layout of the Octapad, and the fact that it comes with a lot of premade drumkits for practicing. Personally I'd go with the SPD-SX PRO because adding my own samples is very important for me.

      @@TheMrLeoniasty besides the looper i’m not missing anything from the Pro that the Octapad has. The Octapad is more like a drum module so it works with more samples for example in case of a snare it’s not just changing the volume when you play louder but also varies the sample.
      The Pro has more outputs which is a big advantage. If you can, try both for a few minutes and you’ll be able to decide. 🙌

    Hi,
    I would like to know your opinion. I hesitate to buy between Roland SPD- SX Sampling pad vs Roland Octapad SPD-30

    My main purpose why I want to buy something like is, is to have something like electronic percussion set in my small studio in my flat - so for that will be better SPD 30.
    But if I am right ,when I will buy SPD-SX I can upload into it different drum samples and I can play on it as on Octapad SPD -30
    So if I will buy SPD- SX, I can use it as drum/percussion instrument and also as an sampler. So I will have 2 in 1. So I think for that is for me better to buy SPD- SX. Am I right?

    Great video! Recently I saw a video on RUclips with Jason Bonham playing with Sammy Hagar on Howard Stern and he's using the SPD-SX like a portable drum replacement kit. It seems to me that the Octapad SPD-30 would make for a better portable kit. Would you agree? I don't have a lot of space for an acoustic kit and I miss playing so I'm looking into something I can play in a small space. Would you recommend one of these over the other (or something else) to be used as a smaller, acoustic drum kit replacement? I'd like to plug in 3 pedals, one to be used for controlling a high-hat pad and two other pedals for double kicks. Doable?

    • @YouzTube99

      @Wayne Louie
      You probably already figured this out, but if a high-hat input is one of your requirements, your decision is easy because the SPD-30 has it and the SPD-SX does not.
      Also, based on what you wrote, you, like Bonham, seem like an experienced acoustic player who is currently constrained from making real noise. How likely are you to want to load samples?

    • @WayneLouie
      @WayneLouie 4 года назад

      @@YouzTube99 Never say never but I don't see myself loading samples at least not right away. For or me the SPD-30 does seem like a better choice. However, since the time of me asking you about it I wound up buying the Alesis Strike Multipad but haven't had much time to use it. In fact, it's on the other side of California at my buddy's house. I was there and played one day, had a hell of a lot of fun with it and thought it sounded great. It has a high-hat input but wasn't able to get it to work... I think you need to go into the setting and create a group of high-hat sounds and assign it all to that output but I didn't have the time. Hopefully I'll have more time with it soon and see if I can get it working. If not I'll be trying the SPD-SX. Thanks for getting back to me!

    Does the Spd-Sx have active dynamics such as are found on the Spd-30? Anybody know?

    • @TheHybridDrummer
      @TheHybridDrummer  4 года назад +1

      Ariel TV it has dynamics, but it’s kinda just changing the volume of the one sample you have, but that works well. In case of the Octapad it used several different samples for the different dynamic levels. For example in case of a bass drum if you hit it harder you can hear more high frequencies just like on an acoustic bass drum.

    • @TheHybridDrummer

      nilu sarkar you need a cable with a 4pin 3,5mm jack on one end (goes to the phone) and two 6,3 mono jack plugs on the other end (goes to the Octapad’s outputs)
      One problem with this is it’s not so easy to set the proper gain, it can easilly get overdriven.
