  • NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg speaks at the “Beyond the Alliance: Partnering up for European Security” panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference.
The panel included the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu; President of the Republic of Finland, Sauli Niinistö; Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, and was moderated by the President of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Heather Conley.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday (18 February 2023), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed that, one year since Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine, President Putin is not planning for peace but for more war. The Secretary General said, "we must give Ukraine what they need to win and prevail as a sovereign, independent nation in Europe."
The Secretary General argued that even if the war ends tomorrow, our security environment has changed for the long term. He said that the Kremlin wants a different Europe, where Russia controls neighbours. “We also know that Beijing is watching closely, to see the price Russia pays, or the reward it receives for its aggression,” Mr. Stoltenberg said, stressing that the war in Ukraine demonstrates that security is global, rather than regional, and defence is not optional.
The Secretary General also stressed the importance of resilience. “Not so long ago, many argued that importing Russian gas was purely an economic issue,” he said, adding that “we should not make the same mistakes with China and other authoritarian regimes.”
Finally, Secretary General Stoltenberg highlighted that, “the most important lesson from the war in Ukraine is that North America and Europe must stand together,” stressing that “without NATO, there is no security in Europe.”
Mr. Stoltenberg was speaking at a main stage panel at the 2023 Munich Security Conference, alongside the President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.
On the margins of the Munich Security Conference, the Secretary General held a series of meetings, including with the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, the Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, and the U.S. Congressional delegation led by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

great discussion, but NATO and Russia should sit down and talk in front of the world. don't go to war because your citizens don't want more anymore. instead, make peace.

It’s definitely correct to prepare for all eventualities but the main focus should always be to figure out exactly what it would take to get the main actors to the negotiating table and what it would take to restore peace.

At this point peace will only be possible if Russians are defeated on the battlefield. Russia will only respond to military strength, not to diplomacy unfortunately

C'mon Turkiye, be a team player. Let Sweden and Finland join our alliance. They will be very valuable members. They both can certainly pull their weight. We Canadians approve. Sometimes I think Sweden and Finland might make better allies than some of our current allies. Slava Ukraini!

Hungary and Turkey should make a decision if they want to be part of Nato and EU or not. Profiting of the benefits and spitting in the hand that gives is untrustworthy and dishonorable. „Allies“ like that will betray you at next occasion when it is serving them. So, maybe it is time to strengthen the whole by cutting the weakest links -„weak“ understood as committment to shared values.

Unfortunately, Turkey always wants to play as a regional superpower no matter what, what may change in long term perspective, but what's even worse, Hungarian political ties with Russia are something not to easily be broken by Europeanwide pressure.

Nato needs to go into Ukraine & help them there!!! Having arms & soldiers hanging around protecting borders, that won't be invaded in the near term, would be better to send at least 50% to Ukraine. They need more men & arms.
