The criterion of embarrassment is one method historians use when looking into the reliability of a historical document. The 4 independent gospel accounts are full of them - about Jesus himself, and the apostles - and other thing. For a careful reader, one cannot help stopping up and find "missing puzzles" in one gospel account - that is "randomly and accidently" confirmed in another gospel account. Let me here show you a subtle example.

I've often thought that it's an undesigned coincidence that the Peter left his career so quickly when Jesus called him being explained by the fact that Peter was introduced to Jesus by his brother in John.

I admit undesigned coincidences are something that still confuse me. Another good one, IMO, is regarding Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus.
The account in Acts 9:23-25: "When many days had passed, the Jews plotted to kill him, but their plot became known to Saul. They were watching the gates day and night in order to kill him, but his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket."
And Paul's own account of it in 2 Corinthians 11:32-33: "At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas was guarding the city of Damascus in order to seize me, 33 but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his hands."
This seems like a good detail to bring up in case a skeptic questions the reliability of Acts. Great video!

God was first hurt by our sin yet He loved us first anyways. We don't have ALL the answers in Life but this existence is for God our Creator and Lord to know and us to find out. AMEN brothers and sisters in Christ our Lord and God bless ya brother. I wholeheartedly agree with you all as many hypocritical people religious or otherwise make themselves look bad by claiming that they represent what is Good and Christ our Lord and therefore is taking God's name in vain I really appreciate you brother for his Christ centered and Scripturally accurate content for the furtherance of The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ ❤️👊. This has nothing and everything to do with the video but please listen if you want to otherwise leave it alone and ignore it. Hello my name is Justin and I'm a fellow Christian and Apologist but I'm also a college student. I'm not a closed minded Theist as I have nothing against Atheists or unbelievers as I speak to them often to understand their reasons for unbelief but we as Christians are convinced of God's Existence due to many real factors). I'm not trying to convert anyone or convince anyone to become Christians as that's The Holy Spirit's job to help people believe but only explain why I believe in Jesus Christ. There's actually evidence of God's Existence in Christianity. First of all there's proof that Jesus of Nazareth existed in history since the writings of Tacitus, Josephus Flavius, Pliny the younger and other historical documents prove that He was living two thousand years ago that even scholars both religious and Atheists agree with historically speaking but not that He's The Divine Son of God because obviously they don't.
I'm going to give you historical and archeological evidence for God's Existence as The Scriptures have prophecies that predate the events recorded in them by several millennia including Matthew, Hosea and Zechariah which prophesy accurately of the people of Israel becoming a nation again after over 1900 years of being scattered around the nations since the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. spoken of by Christ in Matthew 23:29-24:3 and returning to their homeland after The Holocaust with Jerusalem as their capital in 1948 exactly as Jesus The Christ said. The prophets including Daniel spoke of the time where several world empires would arise and fall including the Babylonian kingdom, Medes and Persians, Roman Empire, and Saladin and the Muslims which went in consecutive order for the past few millennia. The people of Israel becoming a nation after The Holocaust in 1948 (ironically the melting point of gold as God compares Israel to gold that's tested in fire in Zechariah 13:8 and Jeremiah 16:15) exactly how Jesus The Christ said would happen since God us everything to come in The Scriptures and not just because people were working towards as Atheists claim which are impossible for any regular man to predict.
Just before anyone says Christianity is a white man's religion made to oppress blacks during slavery you obviously aren't aware that the first Christians were Jews in The Middle East and that Christianity just like any religion can be used by evil and corrupt people to oppress others but you forget that the first Abolitionists/Civil Rights activists were Christians who sought to abolish slavery, racism, segregation, injustice and prejudice throughout American history. Jesus The Christ loves you enough not to give you what we all deserve which is God's Wrath by His Own Blood. Charles Darwin didn't originally come up with The Theory of Evolution over 200 years ago as it is mentioned in the writings of Ancient Greeks who believed in Demons that gave knowledge to philosophers.
Evolution makes no sense when nothing has evolved after thousands of years of human history and supposedly the first creature came from primordial sludge several millions of years
ago funny how they won't believe that God an Eternal Almighty Spirit Being created us from the Earth) which came from a supermassive expansion of matter at high temperature that inexplicably created everything in the known universe that supposedly came from nothing billions of years ago. How did the organs evolve before there were bones, skin, substance and how did any creatures see before eyes evolved? I've studied evolution and abiogenesis in the past and read Darwin's " Origin of The Species" I've studied evolution and abiogenesis in the past and read Darwin's " Origin of The Species" and I'm not convinced macro Evolutionary biology but I accept micro Evolutionary biology like speciation and adaptation because there's no evidence of macro Evolutionary biology nor clear observable examples of it where living creatures evolve into other kinds of species plus the fact that fossils don't show evidence of evolution and genetic entropy rules out evolution. The question begs how did two genders evolve from a common ancestor with a perfectly hospitable and sustainable environment with breathable oxygen and resources to survive on inexplicably? Atheists have the burden of proof to explain how everything came to be and why our existence is possible without the Existence of God from an godless perspective just as Christians have to provide evidence of God's Existence and the validity of His Word.
Evolution requires life to already exist in order to take any effect in living organisms so it doesn't account for the existence of Life and reality. Also evolution is impossible because it goes against The Law of entropy and the second Law of thermodynamics because evolution makes things better whereas nothing continues to get better but decays and turns to absolute destruction in the end. Mark Ridley an Evolutionist said "No evolutionist whether gradualist or punctuationist uses the fossil record as evidence in favor of The Theory of Darwinian Evolution as opposed to special Creation". God's Existence is made perfectly known and observable in the universe as demonstrated in His Handiwork in the intelligently designed manner that Creation was made, human consciences and consciousness historical and archaeological evidence of God's Word being valid history, fulfillment of Bible Prophecies God in His Holiness and Righteousness could give us what we deserve in Hell for our since but He's merciful to give us free will to choose to accept or reject His gift of salvation by grace through faith in His Son Jesus. I don't mean this is any condescending manner but if you'd like to discuss The Scriptures with me or have me listen to your view on anything my instagram account is Savage Christian Kombatant.

how would we even guess that a piece of the puzzle is missing when it needs something additional to point us towards it.
and if we had actually adapted or changed our writing, then there would not have been the 4 eyewitness reports but ONLY one report that was witnessed by 4 (or more).

  • @MatthewFearnley

Hey. Not sure I follow what the undesigned coincidence is here - it seems like all the relevant facts from Matthew 8 are already in Mark 1, unless I'm missing something?
If they are, and if we suppose Markan priority, then a reasonable hypothesis (whether the Gospels are true or false) seems to be that Matthew is abridging Mark's account?

    • @__.Sara.__
      @__.Sara.__ Год назад +2

I think what Daniel is saying is that when writing about this day(When Peter's mother-in-law was healed), Matthew doesn't say it's the Sabbath, but Mark does. That's why people came to be healed by Jesus in the evening, because they had been waiting.
That's the undesigned coincidence- Mark's account fills in a detail left out by Matthew.

    • @MatthewFearnley
      @MatthewFearnley Год назад +1

@@__.Sara.__ Thanks Sara. I think I've seen you over on Testify's channel before?
I think the main issue here is that for an undesigned coincidence, the question has to be raised by one account and answered in another, but the question itself can't appear in the second account.
So if Mark said (essentially), "It was the Sabbath, and Jesus healed Peter's mother in law."
And Matthew said: "Jesus healed Peter's mother, and then in the evening lots of crowds came."
Then Matthew would raise a question (why the evening?), and Mark would casually answer it (because it was the Sabbath), which would suggest that they were both independently remembering details, which supports the idea that they are both eyewitness.
But if Mark actually says "It was the Sabbath, and Jesus healed Peter's mother in law, and then in the evening lots of crowds came."
Then Matthew may simply be copying from Mark, and omits the detail about the Sabbath - which could be the case whether Mark was an eyewitness or simply made up his account.

U.C. argues uniqeness and a coherent narrative with bits of new info from each independent account - not order pf priority. Listen to Bart in video, bro. If that eas to case, watch my other videos on it because by that logic, I would then have argued Matthew being earlier, because then he gives other details. I can send a link where Lydia McGrew explains well what U.C are, not what skeptics often think.

I'm not necessarily convinced by Matthean priority, but I can see that it does work if Matthew did come first.

Yeah, I think a strong case can be made that Matthew was first and early church main one, that was also available in hebrew.
When they complete each other with missing puzzles - early to later, and other way, with minor stuff, in is evidence for reliable eyewitness testimony.
Here is a nice lecture by Lydia.

Yeah, no. Like I always say, when someone prooftexts, read it, and *keep* *reading*.
You either didn't read it all, or you thought you'd be cute by bringing up Matthew's version, as his is slightly different. But all of the detail you're pointing out is there in Mark. It didn't fill in the parts that were "missing" in Matthew; it already has the entire story with all of the details you want to point out. Which is entirely consistent with the author of Mark having gone first, and Matthew chopping up the story order when he redacted it. (You *did* watch what Ehrman had to say, right? You didn't just pull a clip from an apologist's website that had the sound bite you wanted, right? Right? And of course you called Ehrman an atheist when he actually identifies as an agnostic because you're using the actual definition of atheism, not because you had no clue what Ehrman called himself or, horrors, would (gasp) attempt to mischaracterize him for some sort of point... right?)
But it gets much worse than that.
In Mark AND Luke, the story is pretty much the same --- Luke's redactions of Mark didn't mess much with Mark's timeline. Jesus goes to Capernaum, the sabbath comes, he teaches in the synagogue, he drives out an unclean spirit, people are amazed, he leaves the synagogue and immediately heads for the home of Simon and Andrew. (One of Luke's very few places of even nudging the wording here is that he didn't mention "and Andrew.") He there heals Simon's mother-in-law, then people arrive after sunset.
    BUT
In the Matthew version, he doesn't go to the synagogue earlier that day. Instead, he had remotely healed the centurion's servant. This was on the same day in Matthew; the centurion section starts with "When Jesus had entered Capernaum," and then in 8:14 immediately comes into Peter's house to heal his mother-in-law. In Luke, however, Jesus heals Simon's mother in Luke 4, then went the next day to a "solitary place," and "kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea..." THEN calls his disciples, THEN heals a man with leprosy, THEN heals a paralyzed man, THEN meets Levi, THEN explicitly mentions at least two different sabbaths, ... and THEN in chapter SEVEN, three chapters later, he heals the centurion's servant.
Your whole point here is that Mark is confirming Matthew's timeline, but Luke explicitly destroys it. He's almost going out of his way to do so.
So maybe, JUST maybe, when Matthew was using Mark's verbatim text for 56% of his gospel and was rearranging the timeline, he copied Mark's story without realizing that he'd entirely separated it from the reason why people didn't show up until evening. The author of Matthew neither knew nor cared about the significance of "When evening came" as he lifted the passage almost whole-cloth and pasted it into his gospel. For that matter, it's extremely unlikely that Jesus healed the centurion's servant on the sabbath and therefore extremely unlikely that Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law in the evening after the sabbath in Matthew, because not only does he not mention it being the sabbath anywhere in that timeline, but he makes a HUGE deal of Jesus healing a man with a shriveled hand on the sabbath in chapter 12. (Luke also does this in chapter 6, still BEFORE the centurion's servant.) That's kinda anti-climactic if he'd already done something like that 4 chapters prior.
Congratulations; you've just given excellent evidence for Marcan priority of the synoptic gospels and against "undesigned coincidences."

By that logic, my 2 other videos on the topic referred to in this video, I then made a case that Matthew came before Mark, and in the other that Luke came before Mark..!
Nice assumption about my motives, but wrong. Also, if you check out one of the two Bart Ehrman interviews with Apostate Prophet, he says "Im an atheist now".

    • @grumpylibrarian

@@DanielApologetics This video definitely makes the case for Mark coming first, whether you intended that or not. But even Mark coming last, you still have the same problems. Mark cannot confirm Matthew's timeline when Luke destroys it, and Matthew's story would be exceedingly unlikely to have occurred on the Sabbath.
I'll retract the remark on Ehrman.
