    As a former officer of nearly a decade, I can tell you thst even my small police department would have NEVER handled it this way. This was one of the most hastily executed plans (If you call it a plan). Its almost as if they were excited and wanted to hurry to get into a shooting. The statement they got from her was BARELY sufficent for the basic probable cause they had to arrest him. He asmed a leading question of "Did you fear for your safety?" And she responds, "Yes" and his brain went "DING DING DING! AHA! We have a magic word for our basic peobable cause statement".
    The victim was specific that she feared he was going to kill himself.
    A proper response for an armed barricaded man would have been to set a perimeter with more officers, hand out less than lethal weapons, get your negotiotor officer to call him on his cell or house phone, pre deploy medics and fire dept nearby and try to convince him to come out peacefully.
    I think these officers are justified in the shooting but Jesus... just because we can doesnt me we SHOULD

      The idea of going home at the end of their shift is drilled into them as their #1 goal. If some citizen gets wounded or killed, so be it. They have their qualifed immunity, department, union, and DA on their side. They know there's a slim chance of being found guilty of wrongdoing.
      That being said, sometimes they have to shoot. But all in all, these people are simply dangerous and it is best to avoid them.

Being this type of situation the armed individual is rarely going to comply and drop the gun it's just inevitable they will get shot. If you have an issue with this don't call cops. If they shoot someone because of your inaction that's kind of partially on you. Suicidal/homicidal people when confronted are just going to likely get shot refusing to disarm.

    As a Marine combat veteran, I don’t understand the choice in weapons on this one. The second officer had an M-16 variant. When I was in, we used the M-16A2. I’m not familiar with the new little guys besides the collapsible stock and shorter barrel. That being said. If I were the officer, I would have chosen a DP-12. First two rounds could have been beanbag rounds. 2nd two could be bird shot, followed by 12 gauge. There are two points did this. The DP - 12 is a shotgun. It makes a better impression, you get a tasty differences in your rounds, it’s meant for close encounter House to house fights and you can use non-lethal rounds.

    The officers made a lot of bad calls, and a half-decent lawyer will get this thrown out. First, the officers are taking someone claiming to be wife at their word. Although it doesn't show it prior to the recording, it's possible they verified her license as being a resident of the home. However, that alone doesn't necessarily mean much. There could have been an argument prior, and the wife called police as retribution. The officers only verbally identified themselves police once before opening the door with the keys, at night. When the dog started barking, they didn't identify themselves as police, and nor did they identify themselves when Dekeyser appeared. With the officer's lights on, all the officers said was, "HANDS! HANDS! HANDS!". There is so much reasonable doubt that Dekeyser could have thought it was a home invasion.

      You are very right, this is a great video to show how not to handle domestic disputes. The cop assume the woman was the victim and decided he was going to shoot the guy. This could have been handled far better, cops need better training, don't they have negotiators in their ranks?

    • @TyrooShino
      @TyrooShino 2 года назад

      You're basing most of your useless points on a video that has been cut for content on the internet. They wouldve confirmed the woman lived there easily as she clearly had already explained herself. Officers will not shoot even if a gun is in your hand, unless it's aimed (they clearly have disapline or he'd be dead). The officers announced themsevles, he knew fine well it was the police.
      The dude had a meltdown, plain and simple.

    • @Sam11747
      @Sam11747 2 года назад

      @@TyrooShino you're going off the assumption that he had a meltdown. If he did, then there needs to be more evidence of that. I see no such evidence based on what has been provided in the video, and the conversation that took place between the officers and the woman claiming to be the wife.
      The only evidence provided was a single individual making the claim. Someone claiming to be the spouse, even if true as I previously stated, doesn't eliminate potential nefarious motivations for calling the police under false pretenses. Which is all too common in domestic disputes taught in most police academies and from the basic experience of any patrol officer.
      Warrants are usually not conducted at night unless it's under unique circumstances, for the very same reasons we see here. Because its dangerous due to confusion and inability of the occupants to discern if the police really are police, or home invaders masquerading as police. It's not unheard of that home invaders will falsely claim to be police. Additionally, officers should have announced themselves more clearly and multiple times if they were to have entered under, but ideally try to make contact by calling Dekeyser.
      Unless there was exigent circumstances of someone being held hostage with Dekeyser claiming he'll execute them after a certain time, then I see no reasonable legal need to enter without a warrant. Stating "Police" once, waiting a while, not saying it when the dogs bark, then entering with flashlights pointing at the Dekeyser''s face without further saying police when flashlights should create enough reasonable doubt to acquit in front of a jury or dismissed by a judge if Dekeyser has a half-decent attorney.

    Exigent circumstances is the requirement where a warrant is not needed for the police to enter a citizens home. Here, the wife was safe and there was time to consider alternatives. Most citizens especially men will resist knowing police will enter the home aggressively. When Police are not acting under Constitutional guidelines, their authority is negated. Strict guidelines for entering without a warrant were meant to avoid unfortunate situations such as this.
