Looks like two of the most successful movies this year both featured Chris Pratt and 'No sleep till Brooklyn' from the Beasty Boys. I hope studios will learn from this and put these things in every movie going forward
WB had some of the longest running they’re runs this year, paramount had the 2 longest, Disney is the most guilty of a 45 day theatrical window, with many lower budget films running for three weeks exclusively, then getting a streaming or digital release
Nice to know I can go years without listening to a weekly planet pod and still know Maso’s dad Bob Iger is still trying to make a trillion dollars for Disney
I love when the editing mimics James and Maso’s arguments. It almost looks as if it were a bad lip reading. It’s been amazing for years honestly, Keep it up!
As someone that works in animation, I was pleasantly surprised to see a short clip of Ruby Gillman in this video, despite how poorly it did financially. It was my first animated movie credit 🥰 ...and then you mentioned how you refuse to watch Trolls 3, my second animated credit. I guess it evens out.
These videos are edited beautifully. No adhd mr beast type stuff. But very thoughtful visual gags and aid that make what would be an audio only piece of content into a perfectly watchable video. Excellent work 👏
As I've heard a few people echo, it was a franchise that deserves to have ten movies. I want to get sick of D&D movies from oversaturation, cos the first one was so much fun. Apparently a sequel is not off the table though, there was talk that it did do well enough that they're considering another.
@@ThePhilocratesHasbro generates a lot of revenue per employee (about 1.2M), but even with that, revenue was down and they lost money for 5 straight quarters. Even if Hasbro made say 100M on the movie they'd still be well into the red in 2023 (they're 340M in the red in the first 3 quarters of 2023). Also, WotC (the division that makes D&D) had a massive year, so it really looks like everything else at Hasbro was the problem. Revenue is way down across multiple brands.
It doesn't help that right before the movie released, WoTC sent the goddamn PINKERTONS after a RUclipsr because they accidentally mailed him a MTG card earlier than they intended to
@@scarlettNET I don't think regular movie goers would have even known about that, or connected WotC/MTG with the movie. About 8M people went to see the movie domestically, double that world wide. For a movie like D&D to make money it needed to attract a casual audience.
There are a lot of lessons to be learned. While we haven't watched the Bombs video yet, I feel confident in saying, the biggest factor in the profitability of the major movies is going to be budget. This is no shock, but Disney in particular doesn't seem to understand this. Most of the movies on this list averaged about $100M. If you start out with the cast costing $100M like the Disney movies do, you're already in the hole before production and marketing. If your movie doesn't make $1B, it's a loser. Disney hasn't adapted to the realities of the current cinema market. I'll also add, that it's pretty obvious from this list that if you try and put in the effort, you can make a decent, profitable movie for $100M.
Which is a shame cuz Wish could have been a cheaper and more concise film! It really could have been their Spiderverse. It's still my favourite Disney movie by far hahahaha. I even went back to stuff like Atlantis or whatever to see if i was just imagining it, but no, it hits different for me.

I mean idk what metric they’re using but evil dead rise made 146 million off of a 18 million dollar budget. I think that’s wildly more successful than say a 400million dollar box office when your budget was 200 million
Transformers definitely bombed. It cost 200m, probably had a marketing budget of 100m, total of 300m. It needed to make double (600m) just to break even. It only made 437m.
Not surprised because James has kids, but I was surprised to learn Mason knows Skibidi Toilet. It is the type of thing you just see in passing sometimes, but idk, dude had never seen Aladdin. He could’ve easily ignored skibidi toilet
fnaf movie is the most “aw wait this is kinda cute” typa of movie i’ve seen in a while since i expected horror. not disappointed because Matthew Lilliard as William Afton was just a fun 80’s comic villain

So i work at a marcus theaters chain and ths reason why i think disney did so well is because they didnt allow passes. At a marcus theaters you can get a pass that discounts the tickets or a pass that makes the tickets free and our disney rep said we cant take those for the first 2 weeks of any disney movie. Ao if other american theayer chains have that as well that would be a huge increase in money.
As someone who liked the Mario movie, I think your problems with it are fair. I heard someone describe it as candy where, as a fan, they loved it. But, as a critic, they felt nothing.
5:49 this is what I’m saying fnaf and Mario and Barbie are massive massive brands which people recognise and that’s why people are going to see them, the next big thing isn’t toy movies or video game movies it’s movies with recognisable logos, I think Mikel Keaton is kicking himself for calling it the founder and not calling it “McDonald’s” because if he did it would have made billions
Glad Transformers made it here and I hope they both enjoy rewatching ant-man quantumania over again also remember that saying that some people say if you go woke you go broke besides Barbie making a billion dollars🤣
Scream 6 probably should have got a mention at least in the horror section. It cost only 33-35 million, and almost made 170 million world wide. Besides that, perfect job boys!
@@nailinthefashion Yeah Scream 6 was pretty huge in the US. For a few weeks, everyone was talking about Scream again. It was fun honestly, even more than the movie itself (which I overall dug, last act be damned). The Ghostface mask still has to be one of, if not the most popular masks in the USA (and probably other places too) around Halloween, and in general. This definitely spiked sales. A little disappointing overseas haul overall though imo, I expected a bit more. I wonder if the New York aspect actually hurt it a bit there. Or it could been the lack of Neve...
@@mattmccomas1 it's not a diverse property generally speaking. They could do deeper pulls when casting and writing. It's a very American centric plot and then you put it in New York and it's even more pretentious. I certainly did not care about anyone other than Ortega hahaha. To give more range in character archetypes is to give the audience more friction to grip onto. It felt like I just slid through the film 🤷🏾♂️ Set Scream in Japan, London, somewhere we haven't explored the nuance of a slasher with a big budget. Maybe they're an international student and someone follows them overseas, a best friend twist. The series needs to be shaken up in a way that completely replaces the context otherwise it'll keep at this plateau of cult following
@@nailinthefashion I think a shake up is very necessary, agreed. I think we are getting it, for or better or worse.... I do think it is bit bigger than "a cult following" though, even overseas but yeah, I would love Ghosty slashing in another country. Hell, the thought of Ghostface in snow sounds fun and a little different at this point. More is needed than just snow though. The first movie means a lot to me. It in a way for got me into me into film, and not just horror. Might sound silly now, but the series in general has a special place in my heart. I hope they mix things up and bring in even more new fans. Not just people there to see Ms. Ortega (who I do really like by the way) lol.
@@mattmccomas1 I say a cult following because it is relatively niche, otherwise you wouldn't be discussing it performing better. Similarly I think Kamala, Carol, and Monica have cult followings, Wanda, that to me means that there will be a consistent baseline success there but not that "billion burst" potential unless it does something unorthodox. It's number 6, and the target audience showed up but no one else
There are some very last minute additions you guys may need to make, such as Aquaman and Migration, though those likely will bleed over into 2024. Very excited regardless for the other part of this!
FUCK, i COMPLETELY forgot about the fuckin... Dick Tracy villain they fight in John Wick 4 until you showed him for a second while talking about it. what a crazy movie 😁
This has been such a weird year for cinema. Some marvel movies go out of theaters as soon as possible, and then there is oppenheimer which still had showings months after it released
They couldn't really invest in their projects tho, they were still scrambling because of Kang and Majors. I mean, look at the weird Marvels and Loki overlap yet disconnect. If this were another phase, Loki would have been relevant to that movie and ended a week prior. That way the fans who wanna see both, can, and those that just saw one or the other would get lured into the mystery. Instead they catered to people like me who watch everything mutants and magic but then over saturated the field for the normies. Marvels ended up being my #1 favourote MCU film so far, and i had no idea it would be. The marketing was insanely incoherent. Whereas at least we knew exactly what we were getting with Strange 2, which was my number one until now. Theyre so weird dude. If i was a millionaire and in charge of these characters it would be so easy to just keep it simple stupid
The theater was packed when I saw The Sound of Freedom. Sure, towards the end of its run there were probably empty screenings in smaller theaters. That happens with almost all films.
I’m sorry but the fact that I could probably hop on a tram tomorrow and there’d be a solid chance that my tram driver (I’ve seen Maso around the tram depot near my house, I just choose not to bother him because the man’s gotta live his life and so have I) could know what Skibidi Toilet is is currently blowing my mind. A brain that has been corrupted by Skibidi Toilet is operating a B-class tram. God help us all.

I mean idk what metric they’re using but evil dead rise made 146 million off of a 18 million dollar budget. I think that’s wildly more successful than say a 400million dollar box office when your budget was 200 million
They did. Even the highest grossing films were still a loas. It was that bad a year.
@@joeyjojojrshabadoo7462it was a great year from the perspective of
Transformers definitely bombed. It cost 200m, probably had a marketing budget of 100m, total of 300m. It needed to make double (600m) just to break even. It only made 437m.
They wouldn’t have made the list if it wasn’t for the stoke pushing back multiple major releases.
Godzilla to me will always be King no matter how much he makes at the box office. Minus One alone did a lot to prove how much of a legend he still is.
8:25 You know that feeling you get when the villain weasels the heroes into taking a photo with them at a charity ball or something...
Mates, I’ve watched u for years and haven’t watched or listened to weekly planet. WTF I got some binging to do while cleaning tommorow. Keep up the good work fellas.
As, I assume, the rare combination of a Swiftie who went to the concert, and who supports The Weekly Planet via subscription…you’re safe…for now (insert maniacal laugh here) 😈
The biggest Hit of the year is clearly the "Defenders of the Earth intro theme clip" as part of the Weekly Planet intro.
That little montage at the end, you can tell Matt knows his animation well
So i work at a marcus theaters chain and ths reason why i think disney did so well is because they didnt allow passes. At a marcus theaters you can get a pass that discounts the tickets or a pass that makes the tickets free and our disney rep said we cant take those for the first 2 weeks of any disney movie. Ao if other american theayer chains have that as well that would be a huge increase in money.
Always look forward to the yearly bombs and hits vid
Mason knowing what skibidi toilet is is wild to me
BIG wooooop for these hits
What a year in film
Thanks again
Waiting for when James tricks Mason into watching Thor 4 and Quantummania back to back
Telling everyone to shut up was probably the best thing you could’ve done going into this one. 😂😂😂
10:41 is so funny boys thanks
As someone who liked the Mario movie, I think your problems with it are fair. I heard someone describe it as candy where, as a fan, they loved it. But, as a critic, they felt nothing.
10:46 I would pay an additional 9 dollars on Big Sandwich, if it meant that James and Maso would redub the entirety of Oppenheimer.
If you are paying $9 for Big Sandwich and this commentary for Oppenheimer doesn't already exist, you are being scammed out of your money.
I'm so glad you have common trees on big sandwich
I am so glad word of mouth helped elemental. I hope Pixar comes back from Covid I know inside out 2 will be huge next year.
He could make a movie about the founder but he couldn't have actually called the film "McDonald's™" without paying a fortune for branding rights.
Is this the best channel?
Glad Transformers made it here and I hope they both enjoy rewatching ant-man quantumania over again also remember that saying that some people say if you go woke you go broke besides Barbie making a billion dollars🤣
Love your aussie release times, either the last vid before bed or the first vid in the morning lmfao.
Scream 6 probably should have got a mention at least in the horror section. It cost only 33-35 million, and almost made 170 million world wide.
Besides that, perfect job boys!
It should have been in the honorable mentions fer sure. It was a socially relevant moment for people like Barbie. The masks sold out.
It felt like I just slid through the film 🤷🏾♂️
Set Scream in Japan, London, somewhere we haven't explored the nuance of a slasher with a big budget.
Who didn’t see the Meg 2? Greatest film of all time
There are some very last minute additions you guys may need to make, such as Aquaman and Migration, though those likely will bleed over into 2024. Very excited regardless for the other part of this!
Thank you for this 18 minute trailer for the next video
The fact they got Matt Pat in the FNaF movie is reason enough to watch it
Lmao at that Guess Who's Coming to Dinner reference
FUCK, i COMPLETELY forgot about the fuckin... Dick Tracy villain they fight in John Wick 4 until you showed him for a second while talking about it. what a crazy movie 😁
1:10 Short answer: Shut Up!
2:45 Top 10 Shut up!
9:41 Hilarious hahaha 😂
10:20 Now, shut up!
13:59 And, shut up!
17:04 Woke shut up!
Wait, what? The Meg 2 came out? I honestly have zero memory of it coming out
Cheers mates from California
Hello from where we're from!
1:05 Unless it’s Blue Beetle, which turned record profits because its marketing budget was zero dollars.
I’m only here because you told me to. But only after I watched the bombs list
Y’all rule ❤
Transformers and Elemental bombed hard
The theater was packed when I saw The Sound of Freedom. Sure, towards the end of its run there were probably empty screenings in smaller theaters. That happens with almost all films.
Eww you went to go see that, lol.
Apropos of nothing, at 7:48 one of the characters in the comic book is yelling "I will tear you apart!" in Maori.
16:22 what are the other example shown?
Elemental just had a solid concept that animators could explore in fun ways. I assume. I'll never see it.
Anybody know what the movie at 16:23 is?
Crazy to think, and rather ironic, that the biggest bomb of the year made it to number 3 in the biggest hits of the year.
I thought that was guy Montgomery as the projectionist for a second 😂
I’m sorry but the fact that I could probably hop on a tram tomorrow and there’d be a solid chance that my tram driver (I’ve seen Maso around the tram depot near my house, I just choose not to bother him because the man’s gotta live his life and so have I) could know what Skibidi Toilet is is currently blowing my mind.
A brain that has been corrupted by Skibidi Toilet is operating a B-class tram. God help us all.
