Superb! "What I feel in my heart, I give to the world." Franz Schubert. In this sonata, composed in 1828 near the end of his life, Schubert shares with us the torment of loneliness and insecurity he felt throughout his life. With his rare poetic insights Seong-Jin Cho captures the depth of feeling inherent in the music and conveys it to us in a remarkable performance. What an amazing young artist to reach such heights of musicianship!

This is such an enchanting performance. Cho's playing shows he clearly understands the sublime quality and spiritual depth of this later sonata by Schubert. Truly remarkable and impressive, considering the very young age of the pianist (only 22 years old) when he performed this at Gilmore. His refined artistry, musical maturity, and virtuosity makes me wish that he will record a Schubert sonata album in the fear future. (BTW, this video definitely deserves more views and hopefully it will eventually get as many views as the other Gilmore festival video of Cho playing Chopin's preludes!)

A monumental work, ranking with the greatest of Schubert's masterpieces, so eloquently laid out for us on the piano by this young musical genius, Seong-Jin Cho. He elicits all the poetry that Schubert planted in this sonata, and does it with a mature musical sense. He is always communicating, which makes the performance completely riveting.

영혼을갈아넣어 쓴거같은 피아노소나타3곡도 보면 진짜 슈베르트도 참 대단한천재구나 느껴지고 조성진의 영혼을 갈아넣은 연주도 듣고 있으면 20대중반의 청년에게 참 존경심이 절로든다
클래식은 피아노든 다른거든 영혼을 갈아넣은 사람들이 잘하는거 같더라 ㅜㅜ

Fantastic Sonata and fantastically played as always by Seong-Jin Cho.
IMHO, whoever put the pointers towards the 4 movements made a mistake. The final Allegro (SO SO very beautiful) starts at 23:23 (not 26:33).

Young musicians who put the amount of work into learning, practising and performances the way Seong-Jin Cho has done, have my complete respect and admiration. They are treasures. I just pray they have some fun in their lives as well. This is most beautifully interpreted and the recording is excellent, thank you. The final movements are Schubertian gems. Cathy.
Yes. You are exactly correct. I dislike it when people say "gifted," as if some angel made someone a great pianist. It is hard and dedicated and loving work. The word, "accomplished," is a better word, indeed.

Wow, he truly is a great pianist. The piano sounds ugly and is definitely difficult to play. However, he brings out what he wants to bring out. So magical.

슈베르트 소나타는 다른 유명한 작곡가들의 소나타에 비해 난해하다 해야하나요? 기교적으로도 음악적 해석도 어려워서 잘 안들었었는데 조성진씨 덕분에 좋아하게 됐어요. 이렇게 아름답고 애수에 찬 노래인 줄 몰랐어요.

쇼팽 보다 슈베르트가 더 나은 것 같다. 20대 중반이라 이 난곡의 연주에 별로 기대를 걸지 않았는데 장말 대단하네. 슈베르트처럼 골수에 사무치도록 고독한 생활을 해 이 곡에 대한 이해가 그만큼 높은 것이 아닌가 생각해 본다. 듣다 보면 조성진이 참 외롭고 쓸쓸한가 보구나하는 느낌이 절로 든다. 리히터 연주 보다 더 마음에 든다.
저도 어릴땐 쇼팽 좋아했었는데 요새는 비슷하게 애수에 찬 아름다운 곡들로 슈베르트가 더 낳은거 같아요. 그래요 쇼팽은 여친도 있었고 친구들도 팬들도 많았고 살았을때 능력도 인정받고 외롭진 않았죠

it's expressive but is treated t too much like a late romantic work, which it isn't . It almost falls into sentimentality in places.
한국의 다른 그 유명한 피아니스트들은 옆에 놓고 비교하기도 민망하다
그런데 예원학교 서울예고 나왔으면 집에 돈많을텐데 왜 기사엔 금수저아니라고 나왔노 실력뛰어난건 알겟는데

What a horrible piano. Harsh sound, like it hasn't been maintained for years. + out of tune. + a pitch that is too low (I think). I' m a BIG fan of Seong-Jin Cho, however one has to be honest. He is certanily not the best Schubert interpreter. However he plays it very good, convincing, lots of detail, big contrasts, but not with the finesse one can play Schubert, and I think just not the/a right sound, not the right frasing etc.. for Schubert. A bit to 'simple', too big contrasts.. . I rather like to hear him playing Chopin (!), maybe Schumann, and I guess he's super at playing Rachmaninov, Prokoffiev, Ravel, ... . Becouse he plays so good, and Schubert sonates are such extremely marvelous pieces.. still I'm enjoying listening this recording, despite the horroble piano sound.. .
Misses the mark .. not true essence of Schubert … overly dramatic, erratic in the artistic architecture ... the Schubert subtlety & poignancy is lost. Don't get me wrong - Seong-jin is a great pianist and artist, it's just that this performance was off ..
Played too romantically in some spots and too tight in others. It’s actually not that good. He gets too many unwarranted accolades.
Pianist Johnathan Biss warned about playing Schubert "too tight" - and Jin Cho is a little stiff on his Schubert. Don't play Schubert like Beethoven OR Mozart............

I agree on being a little stiff. That's what first caught my attention. Though the performance was still spectacular.
