- This is the full 30 Minute interview with the road-racing legend Joey Dunlop. Filmed while Joey was injured in 1989 Joey gives a rare insight into his life on and of the road. What a gem of an interview with Joey. Just found it by accident and the best of many I have watched of him. Feels great to have met him Robert and William. Dunlops are legendary.
What a beautiful man. His riding was completely at odds with his gentle personality. How can you not love him?

At 8:28, Joey looks like he'd rather be anywhere but sitting in front of a camera & microphone, but watch the change in his whole demeanour when asked about how he rides the NW. What an absolute champion human being. I understand why Michael keeps his cards close to his chest. God bless all you Dunlop's.
He was known to dislike a lot of attention and cameras but yes, that was a great illustration of the dislike of interviews but love to talk about racing.
He was also very cagey because everyone copied his tyre choice. He would roll up with the wrong wheels on, wait for everyone else to change theirs then change his to what he really wanted.
Absolute legend but a such a humble man a real hero

I was on the ferry going to the IOM with some friends when we heard, truly was a sad day. You're missed fella. What a bloke, amazing.
Joey died a few weeks after the TT in Estonia, Europe. 2000.

When Joey was killed I was 14.I was walking home with my mother helping her with shopping bags. And my friend came out of his house to tell us Joey Dunlop had been killed. It seemed everyone in the country knew who Joey Dunlop was. Rip, and to Robert and William

In the bigger scheme of things.. The only person that didn't know that Joey Dunlop was a super star was Joey Dunlop.
Many years ago I was at Killalane, Joey was pitching his tent and we called him over to our caravan, he didn't know us from Adam but sat with us for a few hours telling us tails of his racing exploits. I will never forget that afternoon.... A gentleman.
That's the measure of the man and a perfect description of him. Some thought he was cantankerous whereas in reality he was just highly focused on the sport he loved. No airs or graces, a man who never forgot where he came from and he never chased fame for fame's sake 👍

Joey Dunlop The Best Motorcycle Riders & A Lovely Person!!
I had just immigrated from Armoy the previous October and was living in Boston my Mum called me to tell me that Joey Dunlop had been killed racing in Tallinn it was devastating not embarrassed to admit I shed a few tears for our hero.
I wish I understood what he’s saying. Humble blue collar gladiator. RIP
I admit it's difficult to catch quite a few parts of it. I've turned the volume right up and am concentrating but the Ulster accent is a strong one.
The Legend
So glad I met Joey on a couple of occasions, one in my local at the TT, and again at the Skerries in the paddock....you waited till he caught you’re eye before you spoke to him.....I was in my late teens, and totally in awe of the the great maun.....👍🇮🇲
Joey is and was a great man. i have problems with my legs too. Still think he could have done more
My mother was a Dunlop she loved speed but on 4 wheels Nick name Stirling Moss by the police.

Watching some of the modern F1 stars heave their massive egos into the post-race interview room is such a contrast to Joey's gentle humility. But he is the true legend.

'What would be your strong point in the course; what area are you particularly good at?' Joey: 'Arr, well it's hard to tell...' Probably one of the most inane questions I've ever heard from an interviewer: 'what area...' perhaps all of them, just a thought, 'particularly good' a condescending understatement verging on the offensive (in 1986 he'd been awarded an MBE for services to motorcycling, confirming his status as the people's champion and the most popular man in road racing. At the start of the 1986 season he'd won the TT Formula One world championship four years in a row; in 1988, a year before this interview, Joey had notched up two separate triples at the IOMTT with 13 wins and was half-way towards his still unsurpassed and likely untouchable 26 victories ). 'What area are you particularly good at...'. Self-effacing deeply humane demi-god with balls of tungsten.
