  • We took the STIHL MS 881 along with the STIHL MS 880 out for some testing. We put the saws through their paces to find out how they perform against each other. Watch to find out how we got on with the world's most powerful chainsaws.
    A direct replacement of the MS 880, the MS 881 is the most powerful chainsaw in the market with the highest displacement (121.6 cc) and engine power (6.4 kW). Built for high performance work, this saw is the optimum choice for professional foresters and loggers. Ideal for the most demanding forestry jobs, this chainsaw is excellent for working in extreme conditions when harvesting big timber. Chainsaw can be fitted to a saw frame. Fitted with a 2-MIX engine to comply with EU5 emission regulation and HD2 filter ensures long-service life.
    The MS 881 comes in 30, 36 and 41” bar lengths options with a .404” Rapid Super chain.

    That boggy sound is very familiar.. they mention it’s the first cut with the saw.
    My pro shop advised me to run at least 3 - 5 tanks through my MS461 at idle or under low load (6 - 8 inch wood) prior to even running it at full RPM. I’m glad I listened to them. After a break in period of about 4 tanks at idle or very low load, and 5 tanks at medium load + medium speed, I started feeling a noticeable increase in power each time it cut. It finally plateaued at an honest 25% more power than at factory new condition. It was explained to me that the piston rings, bearings, and moving parts need run time below max speed to seat, and burnish together smoothly. In my mind it was worth a couple tanks of gas to give it the best start possible, and the saw rewards me by absolutely screaming through anything I throw at it. Most recently a 32” maple. Buried the 36” bar full dogs and could barely perceive the change in engine speed.
    These are large, precision engines. Gotta pay em their due respect. Seems like these guys just took it outta the box and let it rip. That bogged down engine note was very distinct on the brand new shiny saw.

    Looks a good saw, but you needed to keep,cutting at std speed, this speed the vid up does nothing to the comparison it just seems your hiding something 🤔 btw.. same chain or not ?
    I could ask more but I will leave it here.😉

      Thanks for watching! We have left both saws at the normal speed and then sped up some of the extra cuts. The saws did have different chains on though :)

    The 881 performed terrible. For a $3000 saw it should have sliced through that like butter. 122cc and it bogs down, wtf!!!

    • @mbm2355

      They mention it’s the first cut with the saw. My pro shop advised me to run at least 3 - 5 tanks through my MS461 at idle or under low load (6 - 8 inch wood) prior to even running it at full RPM. I’m glad I listened to them. After a break in period of about 4 tanks at idle or very low load, and 5 tanks at medium load + medium speed, I started feeling a noticeable increase in power each time it cut. It finally plateaued at an honest 25% more power than at factory new condition. It was explained to me that the piston rings, bearings, and moving parts need that run time below max speed to seat, and burnish together smoothly. In my mind it was worth a couple tanks of gas to give it the best start possible, and the saw rewards me by absolutely screaming through anything I throw at it. Most recently a 32in maple. Buried the bar full dogs and could barely perceive the change in engine speed.
      It’s a large, precision engine. Gotta pay em their due respect. Seems like these guys just took it outta the box and let it rip. That bogged down engine note was very distinct on the brand new shiny saw.

      @@mbm2355 why on earth would they do a comparison if it needed to be broken in?? That seems odd.

    • @mbm2355
      @mbm2355 3 года назад

      @@paulcoote3094 You'd have to ask them, not me. They say it went through PDI, but even Stihl dealers will say that's only a couple tanks.
      In my experience it takes much longer than that to properly burnish the internals. Like 10-15 tanks including low RPM work in mid-sized wood. You can feel the difference, which was a bit eye opening for me.

    Expensive firewood cutting that trunk into useless rounds. Cut the next one into slabs - make useful timber. Neither set the world on fire tbh - I'm underwhelmed. Between bending them bars sideways to within an inch of their lives to none of the chains being sharp.. very Meh.. Boys gonna play.
