Memories of playing this on a portable cassette tape deck in a 1978 Scout II with no radio on our way to fly fishing the South Platte, Colorado. Long before most of you were born, brought me here.
One of the most BEAUTIFUL songs EVER written...Just listen, and let the song take you into another world...We are all sooo blessed to be in this beautiful world of music...
To explain why it sounds medieval or Lord of the Rings-y, it's because the song uses a special kind of scale. Not Minor like Happy (Pharrel) nor Major like Gangnam Style, but a scale called Dorian. Traditionally used to write love songs since Grecian times.
For Gangnam Style, I grant you that it isn't really major-y... if anything major, it's an Aeolian sort of major bebop. Happy is however for the most part minor/blues (and since it's blues, what's a slight change of mode between fellow musicians). I grant it does use a lot of bluesy chords.
+Anjelica Brannan Not to mention an Aeolian scale IS a minor scale. And if we want to get technical--which we might as well--then they're ALL major scales, and what we're really discussing are Modes.
Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme Remember me to one who lives there She once was a true love of mine Tell her to make me a cambric shirt (On the side of a hill in the deep forest green) Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground) Without no seams nor needlework (Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain) Then she'll be a true love of mine (Sleeps unaware of the clarion call) Tell her to find me an acre of land (On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves) Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Washes the ground with so many tears) Between the salt water and the sea strand (A soldier cleans and polishes a gun) Then she'll be a true love of mine Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather (War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions) Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Generals order their soldiers to kill) And to gather it all in a bunch of heather (And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten) Then she'll be a true love of mine Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme Remember me to one who lives there She once was a true love of mine
This is their best song imo, at least that I am aware of. One of the prettiest songs of American popular music. It's a gem of a song. The guitar part is just hauntingly gorgeous. And the vocals, poetic lyrics and harpsichord accompany this. ...always invokes a surreal feeling of Autumn for me.
I love Simon & Garfunkel.. reminds me of summer when I fell asleep in our garden with their music in my ears and the sun shining down on me, while a light breeze kept me cool.. such moments in life, simple yet so special, are important to treasure and save for the future. :)
Another song that I get lost in. I sing it to block out negative energies. When I used to take the metro in Paris, I would sing it a lot. It always calms and soothes me. #MusicQuest
I saw "The Graduate" in 1968 the night before I left for the US Army.Never got over the haunting melody, played in my head until I was lucky enough to hear it on Armed Forces Radio on the ADF of the Little bird I was flying. CLASSIC!
Lisa Davey actually faire would be the older English spelling, and seeing as how this is a very old English folk song, faire is likely the original spelling.
Though I feel dumb, cause when I heard this song I knew Simon and Garfunkel did a cover of it but I also thought they did the original song, but the OG song is much older.
Everyone has a song.. a specific sound to bring the rush of sweet, sweet memory.... I can't listen to this song without thinking of a wooden bench, sat around the wireless in the school hall with brown pamphlets. It was the first time I'd heard the song and they had to take me to the cloakroom because I couldn't stop the tears. For all that, this song gives me so much pleasure, like nothing else I've heard since.
One of the most beautiful songs of all time it simply makes me want to cry because it makes me relize the beauty of good music nobody sings like this anymore
Whenever I hear this, I close my eyes and imagine I'm strolling through a simplistic renaissance town... what beautiful harmonies and poetry. Peace and love has vanished in my generation, but this song takes me to a different world.
My daddy use to play this song for me and my little brother to help us get to sleep when we were younger. This song is my favorite song out of all of their songs.
These two amazing performers whos music spoke to a generation with incredible intensity and passion. If you are not familiar with their music , I can say only one thing ... TUNE IN, TURN ON and LOSE YOURSELF IN THE DREAM
These two had such beautiful harmony. I always wish I'd have been young in the late sixties. The music scene back then was so full of real music, with artists that were appreciated for their muscial talents, not their looks. Video and MTV has all but killed it. This is actually a shortened version of a much older ballad that dates to the middle ages. One of the most beautiful songs the english language has produced. Love it.
i remember in the 6th grade we a simon and garfunkel club in my music room; we literally just sat and ate our lunches while listening to their music. those were the beautiful days of my childhood
I only listen to dubstep and classic rock. They played this at my aunts funeral and it was the saddest but most beautiful thing I have heard. And this song got me into Simon and Garfunkel
I was 12 years old when my dad taught me Alan Parsons Project, and from that point on, I just wanted to hear prog rock, then when I was growing, I ventured into folk songs like of Simon and Garfunkel, alternative, then electronic. From the time I was 12, I knew that I was listening to music that had value and that really matter. Evidently you see that in this song. So I admire your pride. Reminds me of me.
Your feelings and mine are very similar when it comes to listening to this piece. This piece also brings me sweet memories. This song will forever stay in my heart, and I think yours as well.
I can get real sentimental with this song..especially the 'She once was a true love of mine" part. Reminds me of a past relationship with a beautiful girl I knew for a long while and now...this song speaks for itself.
Sure brings back memories of scarborough. Visited a couple of years back. I was just a youngling back then but that down was beautiful all the way through. With the old town center and castle.
I heard this one day and knew it sounded familiar but couldn't place where I'd heard it. I finally realized that when I was little my dad would sing this while he was cooking, lol. It's such a gorgeous song.
this song makes me want to cry, it has such deep meaning. What i truely love is that every other song is about what a guy will do to prove his love, since the girl has proven her side by mearly being beautiful enough to be loved; in this song, there is a request of valour from the part of the male seeking the truest and most impossible actions required by love. I LOVE IT, it's inique
I'm looking forward to my daughter (10yo) playing this at her piano recital this wknd. She picked it herself out of her piano practice books. I didn't realize it was a S&G song until I Googled it. Not sure she did at first either. We both just loved it
This song makes me very nostalgic...I can't explain, it's as if it's taking me back to a past that I've been to before...somewhere mystical...with a looming hope...makes me see that there is hope in life (':
Paul Simon Born In October Like Me is truly an Artist & Genius.. I truly miss The Happy times & PEACE IN THIS WORLD on this tiny Planet.....EARTH AVE HER!!!! DEAR GOD I PRAY!!!!
when i'm got tired, deep fall and sadness of the day, i listen to this song, and then slept for the new beginning to fight back harder, but more humble and better attitude. i do not really know the meaning of this song about parsley sage rosemary and thyme, but during listen this song it make me relax, with love and hope. i feel this song have a beautiful melody harmonize to the singers memories with hopefully love back. "Truly love of mind"
I love this song!!! Paul & garfunk really feel & express TRUE feelings about LOVE Life & Happines.s If you do not find these things in Your Life You Have truly Lost the true meaning of being in this World!!! We must Work so much harder for Peace & sometimes it takes drastic measures!!! Bring it On IRAN, IRAQ & Afgahnisstan!!!
Beautiful! I am just practising this on the guitar, but hearing Paul Simon play it, I think I'll give up straight away. I'll never be half as good as he is!
Oh, a very beautiful Ballad. I studied it the last year in English History and since that day I listen to it everyday. It's a perfect sistem to relax^^
As you listen to this amazing song and your mind begins to drift, ask yourself where we as a civilization went wrong. With beauiful music like this the overwhelming news worldwide is both sad and depressing. Join me in the hope that things will improve. PEACE
It's been a favorite song of mine since birth. I think my mom played it when I was in utero. It's been playing in my head all these years....glad to find it on here. :D
this is such a lovely song, i listen to this when i travel to flambrough/filey/bridlington/scarbrough in the car, and if you listen to it when your driving, its so haunting, its such an amazing song :)

XP an oldie. Jk. Didnt know this song was 400 some years old... Thats fucking amazing
jesus i never fully appreciated the greatness of Simon and Garfunkel. the beauty is enough to make you cry
Such a beautiful and mysterious song. I feel free every time I hear it.
James Schader Gangnam Style is in a minor key though.
Julian Colville And Happy is dominantly in a major blues scale lol
For Gangnam Style, I grant you that it isn't really major-y... if anything major, it's an Aeolian sort of major bebop.
Happy is however for the most part minor/blues (and since it's blues, what's a slight change of mode between fellow musicians). I grant it does use a lot of bluesy chords.
+James Schader you are mistaken happy = major, minor = dark, sadness usually requires a combination
+Anjelica Brannan Not to mention an Aeolian scale IS a minor scale.
And if we want to get technical--which we might as well--then they're ALL major scales, and what we're really discussing are Modes.
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?

Thank you!
Thank you for posting the lyric :)

Sandra California - Extreme Weight Loss! Thank you sweetie for posting the lyrics!
Very good leave the lyrics. Thank you!

My other favorite is "Sound of Silence". They were such a great duo.
I love Simon & Garfunkel.. reminds me of summer when I fell asleep in our garden with their music in my ears and the sun shining down on me, while a light breeze kept me cool.. such moments in life, simple yet so special, are important to treasure and save for the future. :)

I also like to listen to S&G and the _Best of The Drifters_ is exactly that *****, ... the best.
Being from NYC I appreciated S&G, there music brought a sense of peace. Great song that has & will be us for many years yet to come.
Peace 2 ya
One of my favs. Im amazed to learn it is a song from the 1600s (or at least a really old song) i used to listen to this song as a kid
this song is so beautiful. and the harmonys are enchanting. it always makes me cry.
I saw "The Graduate" in 1968 the night before I left for the US Army.Never got over the haunting melody, played in my head until I was lucky enough to hear it on Armed Forces Radio on the ADF of the Little bird I was flying. CLASSIC!
A stunning example of a haunting melody and flawless harmony. Easily one of the best of all time...
Beautiful, enchanting.
About 40years has passed since I heard this song for the first time. Whenever I listen to this song, I feel something nice. Beautiful!
I love your songs I asked my teacher if we could sing Scarborough faire he siad yes all the boys said yuck when it said true love of mine
fair is spelled like that not this faire
Ok thnx
Lisa Davey actually faire would be the older English spelling, and seeing as how this is a very old English folk song, faire is likely the original spelling.
One of the most beautiful songs EVER written...PERIOD.
The anime "What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?" brought me here.
Same, though I heard this song when I was little frequently. I heard it in one of the opening scenes and I was like "WAIT A SECOND."
yeah, it was pretty interesting to hear this in an anime intro
Though I feel dumb, cause when I heard this song I knew Simon and Garfunkel did a cover of it but I also thought they did the original song, but the OG song is much older.
i only know of a Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka? anime.
same

Very very old some musical historians have dated it back to sometime in the 14th and 15th centuries (1301-1500 for )
I had no idea this was a remake.

One of the most beautiful songs of all time it simply makes me want to cry because it makes me relize the beauty of good music nobody sings like this anymore
singing this in 6th grade choir this year
Lucky. My choir got to sing Sounds of Silence, but this song would have been so much better.
Whenever I hear this, I close my eyes and imagine I'm strolling through a simplistic renaissance town... what beautiful harmonies and poetry. Peace and love has vanished in my generation, but this song takes me to a different world.
Sounds so medivial Õ.o
Like something out of Lords of the Rings or a movie about the dark ages
Bailskywalker Old song from medieval times.
oh. That's cool
It is because of the scale used to write it.
いつ聞いてもヤッパリいい!! 懐かしすぎる。。
Haunting..
As an old friend said way back in 1971, "this is your favorite group". Yes, and the memories are as strong as yesterday.
bayonetta brought me here

une de mes préférées de ce duo aux voix tellement harmonieuses!
Our teacher in primary school taught us this song - he played guitar. I loved it.
I'll always remember this song for that reason.
Put it on by accident and broke into tears from the memory of it in my childhood. Better times...
this song makes me want to cry, it has such deep meaning. What i truely love is that every other song is about what a guy will do to prove his love, since the girl has proven her side by mearly being beautiful enough to be loved; in this song, there is a request of valour from the part of the male seeking the truest and most impossible actions required by love. For some reason this song has always reminded me of a autumn day, leaves falling and blowing in the breeze...
I remember singing this in a little school choir ten years back. So long ago...gives me chills.

Great song that remains haunting almost 3 and a half centuries after its creation.
This song is special. It is like thoughts that when one is not concentrated on somethingdrift from one theme to another. Great! Jorge Mario Rodas
