아카데미극장은 2023년 10월 30일, 시민들의 격렬한 반대가 있었음에도 불구하고 원주시장 원강수에 의해 처참하게 부숴지고 말았습니다.
원주시는 아카데미극장을 보존·재생하기 위해 2022년 1월 아카데미극장 소유주로부터 극장 건물과 토지를 매입하였습니다.
또한 2022년 10월에는 아카데미극장 리모델링에 들어가는 비용 60억 원 중 39억 원을 국·도비로 확보하였습니다.
그러나 2022년 6월 지방선거로 선출된 원주시장 원강수는, 전임 시장이 벌인 일은 무조건 반대한다는 정치적인 논리로 기어이 아카데미극장을 부수고야 말았습니다.

In addition, in October 2022, 3.9 billion won out of 6 billion won spent on remodeling the Academy Theater was secured as national and provincial expenses.
However, Won Kang-soo, the mayor of Wonju, who was elected in June 2022 by local elections, had to break the Geary Academy Theater with the political logic that he was unconditionally opposed to what his former mayor had done.
