Sifu, I couldn't agree more. I started in original JKD. They weren't purists, and certainly looked at JKD concepts, as a supplement. Shortly after, I started WT. Everything you say is so spot on, regarding the politics of both systems. Please tell me you've read Jesse Glover's first book. It's the most informative thing I've ever read, regarding why Bruce Lee strayed from WC footwork.

Thinking about Bruce Lee’s personal life, it seems rare to find a movie star as famous as he was (’71-’73) who was married to someone who wasn’t a public figure. Linda was just a “normal” person. Big stars often seem to marry other big stars or celebrities. But Bruce had the serious romantic affair with Betty and his fame was cresting in Hong Kong. Undercover affairs/drug use aside, I think Bruce and Linda would have eventually divorced as Bruce took off in Hollywood. And if Bruce did remarry, his next wife would have been another public figure. Probably another well known celebrity. Whether that relationship would have worked out or not I’m not even going to care. Beyond my speculation. But all of this is just an interesting thought experiment. We’ll never know.

Oh yes thats a very sensitive subject. I dont want to attack anyone, but when you judge how the private man Bruce Junfan Lee really was, your scenario is the most plausble from all.
I ll give you an example:
Some people are incredible naive and dont know how the real world works, especially when it comes to the men-women stuff: When you read the first book of that liar Linda Lee-Cadwell, you gonna see it looks like the only or real reason why they got married was because she was pregnant.
Bruce never planed to become a father during that time at such a young age, so either she tricked him into the pregnancy to bound him to her, or it was an accident. But when a man and a woman have sex, the woman usually has the final "command" if she gets pregnant or not.
If she doesnt want it, it wont happen. If he doesnt want it, it can happen (should she lie to him about protection). But she got pregnant. And if it wouldnt have happened, maybe Bruce would already had left her again around 1965 or so, we dont know.
Since i dont want to hurt someone, i wont mention names, but i am very sure from what i saw and know, that one of Bruce s later "followers" from China (i wont mention his name, but he was like Bruce in the acting business, i call him Mr X), "suffered" something similar.
I cant stand the wife of Mr X. He is a very naive dude, very nice human being with a heart of gold, but he fell for her and her manipulations. But later, like Bruce, he did movies, and i am very sure he fell in love with an american woman (Misses Y) in the early 2000s, but i wont mention her name too.
Then Mr X s wife tricked him into a pregnancy, and so he was forced to stay wit her and he did. Otherwise he would most probably have ended up with Misses Y. Women do things like that. Like men often have no problem to cheat when they are outside the house and the houswife is at home.
And without Bruce, Linda Lee-Cadwell born Emery would have been some nobody from Seattle, nobody had ever hear of her. But she can claim for eternity she was the only woman who ever was married with Bruce Junfan Lee.
But we will never know how much he really loved her, at least in the end. The hints (Betty etc.) show clearly a direction.
But yeah, you cant discuss with Bruce s (naive and blind) Bruce fanboys about that. Linda was great in manipulating and fooling them for decades now. In the newer doc „Be Water“, Betty isnt even mentioned. She simply gets ignored by Mrs Lee-Cadwell and Mrs Shannon Lee.
But yet the Bruce fanboy fraction believe anything what his Estate puts out. To say Bruce was so happy with Linda in the end, is like saying he never took cocaine, and all the letters are fake.
The Estate always mentions this "one family" stuff, and portrays it like Bruce was such a great family man and only loved his wife and children...when in fact he used that "one family" quote from Confucius in the "Lost" Pierre Berton interview in the context all humans on this planet are one family. You dont need to be a rocket scientest to check that out.
PS: I dont blame Shannon. She only knows her father through the stories of her mother. She was 4 when he died.
      Cheers

I always found some statments of Leo Fong and his female student Teri Tom suspect. But you hear Tom in the doc "I am Bruce Lee" (2012) telling that Jun Fan Gung Fu (what Bruce did around 1961) had his base in Boxing and Fencing. Of course thats not true.
You have to see Fong, Tom and Dan(iel) Lee have all backgrounds in Boxing. And it seems since Bruce is so famous they like(d) to mention him about how much he was influenced by Boxing.
I know you knew DeMile etc.. I like to mention something which is also important:
In an interview he stated how he himself, Bruce and others were watching the trilogie of Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johansson in the early 1960s.
To this day Johansson was the only scandinavian heavyweight Champion in Boxing, he won the first fight.
Patterson was a student of legendary boxing coach Cus d Amato, who would later be the mentor and trainer of Iron MIke Tyson.
DeMile said Bruce said back then he himself could never be a Boxer since they are getting hit too often. So much about the statements JFGF has his roots in Boxing, doesnt make sense.
And even less sense is that Johannson and Patterson had both very good hooks and uppercuts in their arsenal, so Bruce saw it there.
So its simply rubbish if someone says he didnt know what uppercuts and hooks were in 1964, of course he knew!
And all of this underlines what starnge people Linda and Shannon are, since they are in documentaries (I am BL) who tell these lies.
If someone has no clue about Lee and watches a doc like that, he/she will come to the conclusion that Lee's real teachers were Boxers like Jack Dempsey, and not Yip Man. Thats the way how its portaryed there. And Fong, Tom and Dan Lee are/were on this horse too.

    • @TheKungFuGenius
      @TheKungFuGenius  11 месяцев назад +1

I'm surprised no one else has taken issue with what Leo Fong said. I always found his statements a bit odd.

    • @chrisbach1533
      @chrisbach1533 11 месяцев назад

They are odd, yes. But being a Bruce Lee fan since over 30 years, i noticed something: Dont matter who it is, but you find almost nobody who always taks the truth. Be it close students, closest friends or even family members. And of course Fong isnt an exception.
I personally lost it with Fong after seeing "I Am Bruce Lee" in 2012. His female student Teri Tom is in this doc, and they are almost like father and daughter, not 100% but almost like.
As you once pointed out in one of your podcast (1-2 years ago), the Estate only produced trash doc s about Bruce. And at some point you said to Dre something like:
"When some musican or basketball player talks how much Bruce Lee influenced him how to dance. Why do i care about that?"
I found that funny because that was my thought when i saw this stupd doc for the first time. The same producer Pete McCormack did a doc about Muhammad Ali two years prior, "Facing Ali", and this one was very good. Because you had 90% people in it who knew and fought Ali (like George Chuvalo for example).
But in IABL 90% of the people never saw or met him. I mean nothing against the late great Kobe Bryant, but he never met Lee, same with Mickey Rourke or Ed O'Neill ("Al Bundy" from "Married...with Children."), what do i care what these guys have to say about Bruce Lee?
And in my humble opinion, this doc back in 2012 was the start that most young people called Bruce the "father of MMA", because Dana told it there to a huge audience.
Long story short: Anyone who sees this doc thinks basically Bruce had only trouble with "The Liar"...or let s say "The Runner" (because Bruce called him that way) because he didnt know what hooks etc. are.
You have always look the roots of someone. And be it Tom, Fong or Dan Lee, they all have their roots in Boxing. So they hype Boxing and connect Bruce with it so much.
Fact is i even told (in writing) a british Boxing author once, who interviewed Tommy Carruthers for the BBC in the UK about Bruce s 50th day of death past July, that he shouldnt take all things for granit what ppl like Leo Fong said, and i told him what DeMile said about him, Bruce and the others from Seattle watching Patterson vs Johansson, when Bruce said he could never be a Boxer since they get hit too often, and the he should try to interview DeMile.
Unfortunatly the late Sijo DeMile passed away in 2021. But i told it to the boxing author already in 2019 or 2020, and even during Covid in 2020 there was a chance to e-mail Jim, maybe he did, i dont know.
So or so the interview never came together. According to Leo Fong and Teri Tom, Bruce was so obsessed with Boxing, trained likea Boxer and basically wanted to be like a Boxer, but according to DeMile, he told him he could never be a Boxer because he cant take so much shots, and i believe that TBH. I think Bruce could absorb body shots very good, but he had a skinny, long neck, and guty with such necks are usually in a coma after 1-2 hits with full force to the chin or jawline, since the head/brain flies around too much when the neck is long and thin.
George Chuvalo is considered by many to be the best chin in Heavyweight Boxing History, never went down in over 90 Pro Fights, took all shots from M. Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman without going down once. And Chuvalo explained to take a shot to the chin its good to have a short more thicker neck. Bruce was the opposide.
This has nothing to do with JKD Concpepts or Original JKD, its only about these claims by Fong and Tom how much Bruce wanted to be a Boxer or like a Boxer, when his physical statue didnt match with a Boxer (look Manny Pacquiao or Naoya Inoue from Philipines and Japan, they are asians too, but they are built better to take chin and jaw punches).
Someone should have asked Fong back in the day, or should ask the still living Teri Tom today, how much sense does it make that Bruce didnt know what hooks and uppercuts are in 1964 when he boxed in 1958, or did watch heavyweight Boxing Wolrd Championship fights in the late 50s and early 60s?
      This makes zero sense.
But like i wrote in the beginning, almost anyone who was connected with Bruce lied at some point, even his family members and friends. I mean Dan Inosanto and his family (wife, daughter, son in law) still state to this day, that Steven Seagal and Bruce knew each other personally, and that a 18 yrs old Seagal did visit Bruce at Jim Coburn s house around 1970.
A report came out not long ago wich was recorded when Seagal was 34 years old. This was April 1986 to April 1987. And in the report you see Jim Coburn, saying: "About 3-4 years ago, i met Steven Seagal."
This means Coburn met Steven around 1982. So its clear Inosanto and his whole family lie about that, and i dont know why?
The same Inosanto said Bruce trained grappling with Gene LeBell. Well, he is/was friends with Seagal and the late LeBell, so maybe he does it because of that?
And we dont even need to talk about Linda anymore. SHe is as much of a liar, allowing ppl like Fong, Tom etc. in her own documentaries to talk lies about Bruce, and she doesnst say anything about the Inosanto claim Bruce and Steven met at Coburn s house in 1970, when Coburn himself said he met Steven around 1982.
And i will never forgive LInda how she mistreated Bruce s chinese family (Robert, Phoebe etc.), but still so many of blind Bruce fans believe anything she says. If you ask me, Bruce was done with her a couple years before he died. And if he had lived longe, he would have married a woman like Farrah Fawcett "Charlies Angels", Lindsay Wagner "Bionic Woman" or Lynda Carter "Wonder Woman", a lady like that. And if he would have, who would still talk today about Linda?
But yeah thats enough. Sorry for the long reply. But Leo Fong and his female students spread very questionable things about Bruce, same as Inosanto ("Bruce and S. Seagal knew each other").

JKD should be both. Wing Chun lays a solid foundation. "Concepts" lays the path in which one chooses to evolve their martial arts path (should one choose so.)
Personally, I do Grand Master Pan Am's interpretation of Wing Chun and White Eyebrow. I am happy with what both system offers. I also dabble in jiu jitsu with some friends.

    @alanswain3781 11 месяцев назад +3

Beautiful presentation KFG. I particularly tune in when you are discussing
JKD. I like hearing your thoughts on the subject. To me JKD is all about what
works in a real fight (aka self-defense) situation. Which is part of the philosophy
I think this is what Bruce was looking for ultimately and this transcends
culture, geography, venue, body-type, And time period. An effective hip toss (Ogoshi)
is an effective hip toss in any culture. So is an effective jab or straight punch. I agree it is all interpretation. To me there are three
main interpretations: Original, Concepts and there’s what is called Functional JKD. The
way Matt Thornton interprets it. The way I tend to view it. To me all JKD can be interpreted
as one or a combination of these three. The question for me is, when my self-preservation is on the
line which one do I think is most viable.

Bruce Lee taught for self improvement more than passing any codified style down through a lineage. His philosophy as a martial artist is that each artist needs to continue to evolve and grow for their own personal style. Adopt what works discard what doesn't he was a pragmatist. he understood the limitations of being stuck in a dogmatic tradition of wrote memorization of traditional movements especially if the practical application is not realized by the student. Some moves were just stupid or impractical to pull off in a real fight unless it was staged for movie choreography. The shit that looks cool mostly doesn't really work. Its also why we need to be crediting him for creating MMA not just JKD. He learned the best most applicable moves from practically all the martial arts and the counters to said moves. That's why he called it intercepting Kuen Do. He already knew what your moves were and the counter moves to make to defeat anyone of any style or lineage. Bruce lee was not only the Original Gong Fu Genius or KFG he created MMA years before the sport evolved by trial of combat after his death. Furthermore he trained the deadlier side of MMA because there are no actual rules in real fighting.... no tapping out in the street or referee to disqualify a dirty fighter. He understood it's kill or be killed in real MORTAL KOMBAT! finish him! It's also why he started training cardio like a forest gump running fool. Fighting is a war of attrition as much as skill. This is how the great boxers won consistently... let you opponent chase until tired and then the punches don't even need to be that powerful. Rope a dope.... and make them miss like Ali and Mayweather. then when they are gassed out put on a clinic of skills.

Greco roman wrestling and people swinging swords are all a part of MMA including south east Asian martial arts and all Japanese and Chinese martial arts. the ancient Greeks didn't have any of these that are now incorporated into MMA thanks to Bruce Lee. was it fighting sure but it wasn't MMA. Guns essentially made traditional martial arts useless for armies. Soldiers today only learn very basic fighting techniques in case they are disarmed. Real mixed martial arts includes all the deadly techniques not allowed in ankration gldiator fights nor UFC fights. MMA is larger than any spectator sport. It is a warriors lifestyle where fights include weapons eye gouges and can be to the death. Bruce Lee trained to kill people.... he didn't train for sport or tradition. The weird thing is that which you describe as the after-effects of “the virus”, is very similar to the effects of late stage (neuro-)borreliosis/chronic Lyme disease (thru tick-bite); an exhausted and weakened immune system which by fighting this perceived invader, then gets into a state of clumsy chronic over-reaction to everything, every stimulus perceived as a threat, by turning the immune response towards its own body/brain (auto-immune effects through a cytokine cascade). Chronic exhaustion, pains, neurological symptoms.. A disease that has been a slow, silent epidemic/killer world-wide since decades, but that the medical/academic community plus the mainstream media remains mostly silent about.
Glad you got better, KFG !

To do king fi you need to be stupid strong n athletic agile ! Or get beat because you use force not same as boxing or basic movement! So you have no chance to fight in mma if u don’t know this. You condition n ability has to be tested n greater than your opponent. Same in mma they just shortcut all movement to knock you out.

This is one of my favorite episodes yet. Having studied with the late Sifu Ted Wong as well as with some prominent "concepts" instructors I found your take to be spot on. At least WC doesn't have infighting.😂 couldn't resist. I have had to change associations due to too much pissing on other groups within the WC families. Great podcast!

This was a really good topic. I guess everyone has their own thoughts on JKD. I'm more from the JKD concepts school of thought, but that doesn't mean I feel the Jun Fan or original JKD guys are wrong. It's what works for me and my personality. But martial arts means something different to everyone. If it works for someone else, then why do people care so much? The whole thing is pretty ridiculous. It's no different than people who get pissed at other people who don't like the same music as you.

WoW, KFG with the KA-POW in the subject matter. Articulated perfectly - There are times I feel you heard my speeches before, haha. You and I share the same take on JKD - that it really is as to what the individual makes of it - as everything else in life! A firm believer of all thoughts, beliefs, processes, etc Are manufactured by the individual. For it is the individual that does internal processing regardless of the form of input and this delivers their own output of that process. I also shut off on the silly debates period. Actually, most are not even debates, rather what you state as insecurity on the defensive. Brilliant sir Genius. I truly enjoyed your eloquent explanation of either side, for yes they are both ok. As long as each understands why they are doing what they are doing and good for themselves. Adaptation is key for any realm in life. And wrapping oneself around just one side of the equations is not balance or true understanding. Bravo. Episodes like these really spark a high level of appreciation. Your explanations to the layman are like writing books for dummies. 👏🏼

THE TRUTH IS IN THE MIDDLE, THE OLD IS STUCK BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S A BAD THING & THE CONCEPTS HAVE COMPLICATED THINGS. YOU CAN ADD ON BUT KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID. Is that.... no.... is it..... 😮DRIZZ BANGER. 😆🤘🏼so glad I made it. You are a KUNG FU GENIUS Alex. #facts 💯☮️the style you first learned, was it FACING, ANGLES or SOP. Sop is almost all HUEN SAO and open hand push. I learn Kung fu from LAM, JKD from inosanto, and Chinese boxing from FONG. 💯see, that’s why we learn from DAN, because is he going to lie? He’s an older man now. Na mean. 🤗I can tell you what I know. 1. ONE WAY is to (FONG METHOD) keep a long lead strike on your front hand and continually step in and cover with KAO SAO PAK SAO and BONG SAO two handed, and the boxing is set to uppercut, hook, and shoot over the elbow. Real close. DANS VERSION is to use PAK SAO JEET TEK and BUI GEE. Sword fighting with the long leg and fingers outstretched. The LAM way is to fight HONG KONG STYLE. Trapping. FUNG HAO, control, gua choy high and low. GWOH SAO and changing. Using TAN BONG and FOOK with JUM and GAANG and QUAN. See, they are different. 😛❤️I think we need them all. I can tell you from experience. The JKD PEOPLE who trained under Bruce don’t like the original jkd people. Tommy Caruthers and his top student THOMAS MARKS. They don’t know the curriculum. Plain and simple.2:23 well he wanted to make something better than wing chun alone. 💯☑️

@@TheKungFuGenius Consensus is overrated only in untested unchanging non self correcting systems of knowledge stuck in dogma and belief bubbles of human ego.. That is the genius of the scientific method. It doesn't prove what is correct just what is false. And so the consensus of the majority community after repeated testing is the body of knowledge that cannot be falsified. Its interesting how scientific you are in your positions but the system of consensus absolutely matters. You would love the science podcast "The skeptics guide to the Universe" they are constantly calling out the BS an hot nonsense. Dunning Kruger effect and all the lame echo chamber biases based on false logic and logical fallacies are talked about in the context of scientific discoveries. Your voice of reason often reminds me of the scientific method. Consensus in this context of a self correcting system that is willing to say when it got it wrong is what generally accepted truths of consensus based on Facts and evidence IS and is the reason why science and not crystal worship brought us LASERs GPS Computers the internet and all other technology. and all justified by facts and knowledge of consensus in the scientific community. The humanities on the other hand have gone off the deep end of confirmation biased bubbles of self reference and what-aboutism.
