Happy Monday everyone! With the price of new cars becoming more and more outrageous by the day, its refreshing to see a new vehicle like the Kia Niro on the market where you can get over 50 MPG and a decent car with a ton of tech, style, and feature for less than $30k. Even this fully loaded version comes in around $36k and it offers a ton of car for the money! We're going to try and wrangle one together with the redesigned Prius for a full comparison test later this year!
For the climate control touch panel… hold down the fan icon and a secondary menu will appear allowing you to choose which screen gets defaulted after 3 seconds… I have this car 🚗

I remember Hyundai back in the 80s Pony Stellar were also disasters.
I bought this car in January 2023. Best car I've ever had so far. I average 48mpg all highway driving and 54mpg in the city. You either have a lead foot or drive in mountainous terrain. Sometimes in the city, I get some outrageous number like 80mpg ......Oh and only $29 to fill from empty here in Virginia Beach. I've also noticed that the engine turns off on the highway when I don't expect to. It's really strange, but I'm not complaining

I have purchased the 2023 Niro (EX Touring Hybrid) and have had it now for about 2 months. I drove it from Phoenix to North Georgia and back which was roughly 2000 miles each way. Driving East, I averaged 54MPG in eco mode using the cruise control as often as possible set at around 67MPH. Driving West, I averaged 45MPG still in eco mode, using the cruise control not as often, and speeds between 65MPH and 78MPH. I also made another trip to Las Vegas and back to Phoenix that totaled about 700 miles. Overall, the car has now been driven around 6000 miles, the average (according to the dash setup) over the entire 6000 miles is around 49MPG. I am very impressed with its economy. I do agree in eco mode, it does lack power, but that's okay. I made the purchase not to win any races or quarter mile time trials.
The 18" wheels on the Touring trim costs 5-10% mpg. I have an SX with 16" wheels, and it consistently returns ~53 mpg in mixed urban/suburban/mountain driving. On a 750 mile drive mostly on interstates, with a passenger and fully loaded, it returned 46 mpg at 70-75 cruising speeds. The engineering is brilliant; I am constantly discovering small touches that collectively make it the best car I have ever owned. UPDATE: 6 months later, first service at 8000 miles, current mileage 10,500. Overall mileage since has improved to ~52 mpg - calculated, not based on the ~5% optimistic figures reported by the car. Mixed driving 60% back roads , 20% city, 20% interstate.
I've heard several auto reviewers complain about the mileage, but Kia gives them the top trim with the 18" wheels and I seriously doubt their driving them normally. Most are probably pushing the car pretty hard. Normal driving such as what you do and the result you got makes more sense. I'm actually looking at a SX with the 16" wheels like what you have. Its a hybrid - the whole point is to maximize mileage and I don't see a need for 18" wheels. Plus the SX will probably have a softer, quieter ride with higher profile tires.
I, too, have the 23 SX with the 16" wheels. We've put about 1000 miles on it, and we're getting more than the estimated mpg while predominantly city driving. I'm averaging 60+ on my daily NYC commute. We need something slightly larger than the Prius since we have car seats and a large dog who must go in the trunk. The cargo capacity and leg room are great, and my 6'2" husband has never been more comfortable. This meets and exceeds all our needs with great features to boot.
Honestly my plan is to buy aftermarket wheels with the same spec as the lower trims and still get the features of the limited. That way i get the good mpg and my own style
I bought my first Niro in 2018, mostly for ground clearance/seat height (I'm old, with bad knees and back). The Prius (and my previous Mazda3) is too low, and painful to get into and out of. I liked the '18 so much that I just bought a 2023 EX model. Many of the issues that bother the reviewer don't bother me at all. Power is "adequate," and 8.2 seconds 0-60 (actually, anything under 10 seconds) is, indeed, quite respectable unless you're doing street racing, which I gave up decades ago. My EX is very comfortable to drive (I'm 6' tall, 205 lbs.), surprisingly nimble, gets mileage in the 50s around town, and nearly 50 mpg on long interstate trips. I genuinely like the 6-speed, dual-clutch transmission - much better than a CVT. The reviewer must have a genuine lead foot to get the mileage he's citing. I got 48 mpg on a 2,500 mile trip to the Rockies from Minnesota that was virtually all interstate at 70+ mph - not a hybrid's strong suit. I get low to mid 50s mpg around town. Fuel mileage will be lower in cold weather (I'm in Minnesota). I've never regretted that the Niro doesn't have 4WD, and we get plenty of snow in the winter. All-around vision is quite good except for the blind spot at the rear quarter panels (the blind spot monitor is one of the few electronic features I actually use). Brakes are quite good, and given the market segment it's designed for, wind noise at highway speeds is also pleasantly low. Back seat holds the teenaged grandkids without a problem, and the "way-back" hauls multiple bags of mulch, tools, guitars, etc. without complaint or problem. Dashboard display is colorful and informative, and best of all, it's relatively large and easy to read. Contrary to what the reviewer says, it's all digitized - there are no analog dials or displays. The Niro is not perfect, but no mass-market automobile is. I've never seen anything in print to suggest that the "aero blade" at the rear quarters actually has a function other than marketing propaganda, though it might have some structural value. One design flaw I note - not enough to keep me from buying the car - is the low-mounted rear turn signals. They ought to be at eye level for following drivers if they're going to serve a safety function, and there's plenty of room for Kia designers to put them higher than they are. Beyond that, I'm quite happy with my 2023 EX.
I have the HEV. I wanted the plug-in but I couldn't find one anywhere. I love the car but I must admit, I want a little more power sometimes. Glad you got one!
@@phillipcarroll6625 you came out much better by not getting a plug-in: that’s the worst thing you can do. But I would imagine you’ve done exhaustive research like I have: you don’t strike me as unaware.

Great review; Thanks! A couple of comments about my personal use/needs. I bought a 2024 Kia Niro EX Touring to replace my 2018 Hyundai Ionic hybrid. Given our garage in Arizona, with built-in cabinets at the front (really useful since there is no basement), the length of the car really matters. The Kia Niro was about the only hybrid I could find that wasn't longer than the 2018 Ionic. Even the Prius, at an extra nine inches, would have been a really tight fit. This is just to say that sometimes "size matters," in the sense that smaller is better. Given that, the back seat is amazing--much (much!) better than the Ionic was. As for gas, I'm running 46-47 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. Close to what I got with the Ionic. Power is ample, albeit not earth-shattering. My basic point is that for a hybrid car with this much interior space, and an exterior running only 174 inches, there is no good competition I could find. For many, the size difference won't matter; for me, it was essential, and I find the 2024 Kia Niro to be good looking, tech-savvy, the right size, and all I need....
Hi, there is a bypass for the climate control/ radio control where the system automatically switches back to radio after you use it for climate control. It makes that brilliant system from Kia.
This is a really cool lookin' car, especially in THAT color! That said though, I can't believe the massive single piece of piano black on that door panel, is KIA tone def on people complaining about it❗️❗️
With the new Prius out you can actually find a Niro Hybrid with a discount. I checked nearby Toyota dealers and they're of course adding on substantial dealer markup. The Kia dealer is offering a $3,000 discount on the Niro below MSRP. I can live with a little slower car... especially since its more upright (which I prefer) and has more cargo capacity.
In the Kia connect app you can set the preheat the steering wheel, heated seats, mirrors, defrost, or turn the ventilated seats. Once opened on your phone, tap the climate, then custom.

Now that the new Prius is out and looks amazing, it’s gonna sell like hotcakes! The Niro does have more headroom though and that makes it feel more roomy.
@jbar_85 I am an owner of Niro 2023 EX because I couldn't wait for a Prius. I had a chance to rent the new Prius a few weeks ago, and definitely I agree that it's really good. But NOT 100% better because it's way too narrow for a driver, so I thought I would not change my decision many times while driving.
I wish you could get a power passenger seat, wireless Android auto, the cameras that display on the dash when you turn your turn signals on, less gloss black, and not having to toggle between audio and climate controls.
Lets all not forget the previous niro, hyundai ioniq hybrid both rarely got their advertised mpg. The powertrain/drivetrain has not changed so expect similar results to this. Ioniq hybrid advertised 59 combined, actual on fuelly is 50. The previous niro was suggested at 50mpg and only got 45-47 combined on most people.... so guys, wait for the civic hatch hybrid in 2024(la auto show) or look at the prius
A lot of people don't like CVT transmissions, but having lived with one for quite a while now, I do. I don't like the shifts basic transmissions do. So I probably wouldn't choose this vehicle. I'd go with a Toyota Prius [AWD] or even the Corolla Hybrid [with AWD].
I completely agree on the CVT. All our cars have a CVT,and we are use to the smoothness. I hit a deer and got a CX5 as a rent for a month. I couldn’t stand the gear changes, jerks, and high RPMs. My kids kept asking what was wrong with the car.
@@xzimxzim "My kids kept asking what was wrong with the car." LOL Nice! 😁 Agreed. They are much smoother...and I prefer that as well. 🙂 I had thoughts of a Mazda at one time in my life, but anymore, if it doesn't have a CVT, I'm just not interested.
It looks horrible in white. It's just not right in gray or silver. Black is already black. With the other colors, meh. I wouldn't want to pay extra for it (but they want to charge extra for it!) But no way on white, gray or silver cars. Just no.
If you don't want to plug the car,yes the hybrid is better, but if you want to plug in you have 33 miles of electric range and you have a bigger battery and electric motor in phev model
Actually, you pronounced Peugoet (PEU-JO) correctly. Its funny, all the American/Anglo car reviewers always pronounce French car makers incorrectly convinced they are saying it wrong, and you did the opposite. Ill give you a clue in Citreon. Americans alwats say (Cit-rin). Thats wrong. Its (CIT-ROY-AN) Nice review of the Niro, Im looking at getting it or the Sportage.
Note: BASE model comes with halogen front lights. HALOGENS ARE BETTER IN WINTER CLIMATES BECAUSE THEY GENERATE HEAT WHICH DOESN'T ALLOW SNOW BUILD-UP ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS!
A regular is a regular: 1.6L gas engine with Hybrid capability to 49mpg. A plug-in is a hybrid plus a plug-in which you can drive 35 mis. on electric only. An EV is 100% electric.
You’re looking to buy a 2023 Kia Niro hybrid, my advice is to purchase literally any other car. Three weeks into my four year lease with the temporary tags and plastic still on the floor mats, this car just abruptly stopped in the middle of the road saying hybrid system failure. It has 1100 miles. What a joke.
I get 54 mpg in mine. And who cares at this point about zero to sixty. Zero to 40 mph is key in the city. AWD, unless you can't drive in the snow, 4WD is just more junk. If the snow is so heavy that you need 4wd, you might want to stay at home.
True. Also, FWD with 4 snow tires works just as well as AWD AFTER the car starts rolling in MOST snow conditions. NOTE: AWD makes no difference WHATSOEVER over 35 mph, which is why we see SO MANY SUVs spin off roads in NH every winter.
I just spit my coffee out in rage! Did you just say the lx model includes wireless apple carplay!??? I just bought the EX touring last week and this pisses me off!
you can get a wireless carplay adapter. It’s just a mini bluetooth module that plugs into the USB where you typically would plug in for carplay. one brand that offers them is “carlinkit”. Check it out, it may solve your issue
You left out that the Kia doesn't qualify for the $7500 tax credit so it's going to be a hard sell compared to those that do. If it did, that $36k would drop to $28.5k.
You can't get any Toyota or Honda Atp with halogen bulbs, LEDs are standard & Kia/Hyundai need to stop with the cost-cutting on safety because they'll be quick to offer you something you don't need like cooled rear seats in non luxury 😒
If you want to buy a Prius...you'll probably have to wait at least a year. There is a waiting list for the waiting list. If you want a car now...Nero will be your choice as they are in stock.
What is the most fuel efficient hybrid cars on the market right now? And I mean real-life fuel efficiency, not the overly exaggerated advertisements these car companies make about their vehicle's mpg.
I bought a key for Hyundai's and Kia's at the dollar store today - a USB cable and a screwdriver. Cheap Korean junkboxes. The only thing most people say, when they see a Hyundai or Kia, is "Korean crapola."

I’m getting near 900 kms a tank love this cuv
I don't understand. Does Niro has an elevated seating just like Sportage & Rav4 or does it feel like you are sitting in a sedan??
Best kept secret there is for long range efficiency; LX version has surprising tech for a base model.
I wish you could get a power passenger seat, wireless Android auto, the cameras that display on the dash when you turn your turn signals on, less gloss black, and not having to toggle between audio and climate controls.
Kia will happily sell you a Sportage
Great Review
Lets all not forget the previous niro, hyundai ioniq hybrid both rarely got their advertised mpg. The powertrain/drivetrain has not changed so expect similar results to this. Ioniq hybrid advertised 59 combined, actual on fuelly is 50. The previous niro was suggested at 50mpg and only got 45-47 combined on most people.... so guys, wait for the civic hatch hybrid in 2024(la auto show) or look at the prius
Is anyone hearing a popping and popping sensation near the gas and brake pedal when turning?
A lot of people don't like CVT transmissions, but having lived with one for quite a while now, I do. I don't like the shifts basic transmissions do. So I probably wouldn't choose this vehicle. I'd go with a Toyota Prius [AWD] or even the Corolla Hybrid [with AWD].
I completely agree on the CVT. All our cars have a CVT,and we are use to the smoothness. I hit a deer and got a CX5 as a rent for a month. I couldn’t stand the gear changes, jerks, and high RPMs. My kids kept asking what was wrong with the car.
@@xzimxzim "My kids kept asking what was wrong with the car."
LOL Nice! 😁
Agreed. They are much smoother...and I prefer that as well. 🙂 I had thoughts of a Mazda at one time in my life, but anymore, if it doesn't have a CVT, I'm just not interested.
It should be noted that eCVTs aren’t CVTs in the traditional sense, and we need to stop comparing the two.
@@tails300 I admit that I'm not up on the differences. Could you summarize? That may help me in the future. Thanks [if you can].
The stripe on back makes it look ridiculous IMO
Sure does
the pearl white without the stripe looks the best by far
@@pantloaded I think you are right about that Eddie!
It looks horrible in white. It's just not right in gray or silver. Black is already black. With the other colors, meh. I wouldn't want to pay extra for it (but they want to charge extra for it!) But no way on white, gray or silver cars. Just no.
Is hybrid better than plug-in hybryd?
If you don't want to plug the car,yes the hybrid is better, but if you want to plug in you have 33 miles of electric range and you have a bigger battery and electric motor in phev model
Same 1.6L engine in PHEV.
"Poo-jho" is correct pronunciation for Peugeot.
Finally someone called them out on this non 4x4 suv lie
I was starting to feel like the kid in the emperors new clothes that was like he’s naked
Love your reviews I haven't no review on the New Buick Envission which is beautiful SUV
Some channels have that
The climate controls are linked to the phone app as well, at least that is my expetience with the Sportage
I'm not interested in the hybrid Niro, but the PHEV and EV are at the top of my shopping list.
$26,500 + dealer mark-up ($4-5k)… yeah, Nah, yeah I’ll PASS🤓
Oh crap they are marking up these piles already? I’ll keep my 21’ CX-5 by Mazda
this is perfect size, big suv's are stupid unless you have 5 kids
Actually, you pronounced Peugoet (PEU-JO) correctly. Its funny, all the American/Anglo car reviewers always pronounce French car makers incorrectly convinced they are saying it wrong, and you did the opposite.
Ill give you a clue in Citreon. Americans alwats say (Cit-rin). Thats wrong. Its (CIT-ROY-AN)
Nice review of the Niro, Im looking at getting it or the Sportage.
Why can't it be more than just a commuter car?
How different is this with the 1st gen niro? Looks like the same engine, same interior volume and same body shape.
I've never had carplay. My current vehicle connects via Bluetooth or Plug in and the phone acts like an iPod.
Note: BASE model comes with halogen front lights. HALOGENS ARE BETTER IN WINTER CLIMATES BECAUSE THEY GENERATE HEAT WHICH DOESN'T ALLOW SNOW BUILD-UP ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS!
Pooh Yo 😂😂 i think u said it close enough cause i cant say it right i know..
My friend from outside the US owns 2. He calls them Pug or “Pəh-ZHO.”
No. It’s like Poo-Zho
Cadillac style lights
What's a regular hybrid mean? Does it need plugging in?
A regular is a regular: 1.6L gas engine with Hybrid capability to 49mpg.
A plug-in is a hybrid plus a plug-in which you can drive 35 mis. on electric only.
An EV is 100% electric.
Hyundai Europe's new Kona... wonder how much tech is going to be shared with this or the next Niro.
36K ouch!! I would rather go for a more reliable Toyota RAV4.
Buy the Niro hybrid base for $27k.
I can’t stand that blade thing on the side.. also why do they keep putting the turn signals in the bumper!!!
Honestly there needs to be regulations against having them so low in the bumper.
Yes that blade is just fugly. And the signals are just to do something out of the ordinary from every other manufacturer
I know right?! I actually hate the fact that the turn signals are so darn low!
The 60 to 0 time is more important anyway.
I don't need to go 0-60 in 3 seconds, where does that help? @@JWFas
Yes that’s where research ahead of time saves you from making mistakes. Hope you didn’t burn yourself.
and that's why I just read the comments and smile
While this doesn't really bug me, I do see how it could, the 8" screen/os has wireless but the 10" doesn't, crazy
@@jsl02008 me too joon! Me too!
Seems like you do a little research before we do one of these videos. Paddles are for regen not the transmission.
I don't know how KIA computes their highway MPG. I have the Sportage HEV and the highway MPG is nowhere near the rated 38 mpg.
You left out that the Kia doesn't qualify for the $7500 tax credit so it's going to be a hard sell compared to those that do. If it did, that $36k would drop to $28.5k.
if you were poor, you wouldn't be annoyed by anything.
It's nice, but I like the first generation the Niro a lot more. The exterior of this one is just not for me.
They losing money on this car. This is Halo cat quality ya ya ya😊😊❤❤❤😂😂😂
I hate that 2 spoke steering wheel design. It looks like something from a 1975 Buick.
🔥🔥🔥🤙🏽
I absolutely hate piano black. Looks horrible with just the tiniest bit of dust on it.
You can't get any Toyota or Honda Atp with halogen bulbs, LEDs are standard & Kia/Hyundai need to stop with the cost-cutting on safety because they'll be quick to offer you something you don't need like cooled rear seats in non luxury 😒
Base models come with HALOGENS which create heat and keep ice and snow from building up on HEADLIGHTS!
Prius over this any day
I liked this new Niro compared to the previous generation Prius. Then the new Prius arrived. 🤷♂️
@Brian Lee you are right Lee
If you want to buy a Prius...you'll probably have to wait at least a year. There is a waiting list for the waiting list. If you want a car now...Nero will be your choice as they are in stock.
Front wheel that’s why it’s some what cheap. Whenever you see a somewhat affordable electric or hybrid vehicle you know it’s only fwd
90% piano black plastic. Nope.
Can you glbuy a spare donut?
“Kia does not mention 0-60 times…” - as I’m literally looking at the opening graphic showing “0-60 - 8.2 seconds.” 🤨🤔🙄🤦♂️🤷♂️😂🤣
You lost me at DCt
He lost us both. Well Kia did
The DCT makes this car very sporty and it has been so reliable for 7thousand miles already! It’s impressive and efficient!
Pure garbage
not that small now
When you're getting 50 mpg in a slightly bigger car, why quibble?
What is the most fuel efficient hybrid cars on the market right now? And I mean real-life fuel efficiency, not the overly exaggerated advertisements these car companies make about their vehicle's mpg.
hi bald
It's the same size As an F1 engine. Lol the F1 engine put out 900 more hp lol
"Synthetic leather"
WT-actual-F?!
It's not leather, it's a synthetic material.
lol lowest priced Niro in san diego is 43k
What is a hybrit car? I know EV cars and other cars that work with fuel.
A hi bread car has a traditional engine and 2 electric motors
@@2004cyrus I was rooting for your sentence to end in toasters. 🍞
I bought a key for Hyundai's and Kia's at the dollar store today - a USB cable and a screwdriver. Cheap Korean junkboxes. The only thing most people say, when they see a Hyundai or Kia, is "Korean crapola."
Do you always live in the past? ONLY the 2012 and 2013 non-pushbutton models had that potential problem.
Just go with being bald. Shave yur head.
He's trying to grow them back.
