Nice job and experiment on this stack mod. I got to get an offset in my backyard after I move back in. Watching all these cooking videos the past 1 1/2 years while my house was rebuilt, has improved my knowledge of how to BBQ right and I need to see if I can put it into practice.
I bought a stainless steel elbow so I’m all good. :-) A bread baking tin with the end cut off works like this mod you just did. Super cheap, too. Please do more vids on the OJ. I’d love you to do a beef ribs cook.
They do make aluminum 3in elbows which is what I have on my OK Joe. They are a little bit harder to find but if you want to save $20 and don’t want to risk using galvanized its another option.
As I have watched your videos for a year, I wonder what you use each smoker for? Is your kamado better for some foods than your offset, and vice versa? I use a vertical offset for heavy beef like brisket, an Akorn kamado for medium meats like pork butt and chicken, and pellet smoker for gentle meat like pork loin, jerky, fish.
That’s the real reason for me (as I did check the temp issue before showing it and was comfortable I wasn’t risking mine or anyone’s health) is gaining back useable space
I just built a bolt on smoke collector with a 4 inch stack 36 inches long. My Oklahoma joe highlander works perfectly. Thinking of having the design run off in bulk and sell them for about 350.
Hey James, I have the same Oklahoma Joe and on that same website that you got the outlet relocation plate from they actually make a replacement firebox too. I have looked and looked and have not found any info on it; would be great to see you try it out! Maybe it helps with the size of splits you can use?
Hi James. This BBQ mod for the stack. Did you had to pay shipping? I went on the website and they have it for $46 Canadian and wanted $43 for shipping.
Just install a heat deflector Baffle plate for a more even temp throughout the cooking area. Once again, why do you build your fire on the bottom of the firebox? OKJ was not designed for that. Using the extra grates provided, it levels up your fire and allows you to scoop out the ash during the cook...increasing air flow and a much more efficient fire. I HAVE done this to my OKJ with perfect results!
Just responded on your other question so reposting it here.... Having the fire higher/drafting into the cook chamber isn’t ideal, that’s why the firebox on all offsets is as low as possible while still overlapping the cook chamber. Hot un-tempered gasses would be like cooking a brisket with my grill blazer gun and dry/crisp things up. The grates are predominantly for ash which you get more of when using charcoal. I’ve done it side by side and I have plenty of other grills that burn charcoal for heat and use wood for flavour and it’s not the same result as going just wood. This is the last video on the stock firebox floor, my semi insulated firebox is back in from here out as it helps its perform just like my larger offsets, non of which use charcoal grates and non of which try to get the fire up higher There is an infinite amount of options, I am not saying my way is right but my goal is to get food to be as similar as possible to larger offsets and this approach does better than all the others I’ve tried when comparing the results side by side
I don’t either which is why I wasn’t concerned and showed it but judging by the comments you’d think my video had a death wish for humanity so I thought I would show the temps it takes to get close and provide an alternative
I really appreciate the care you take in responding to comments and setting up your tests.

I've been actually looking into getting this smoker for a while now. Thank you for all these little tips and tricks!
Glad I could help! Congrats
Just picked one of these up for a really good price. Using your videos to get it squared away before I season it. Thanks for all the info.
I can now sleep at night, glad you took all of our concerns seriously :-)

Ya you’re good with stainless.
I just installed my smoke stack lowering kit today I’m going to try it out this weekend.
Enjoy it

Great follow up video. Nice mod from LavaLock.
Great video! Thank you sir Quick Question where can I get an extended chimney like the one you have one your grill ? Thanks in advance
Great follow up video thanks for sharing the safety factor Cheers
You bet

Nice job - maybe it's time for some hot and fast brisket on that thing now that you don't have to worry about Zinc poisoning!
That is a good improvement for cooking space.

Can always use more space! #biggerisbetter 🍻
I don’t have an offset, but I think this is genius and all offsets should be made like this so no drilling is required.
100% agree, that would be nice
What size drill bit did you use?
What brick is that your using in the fire box?

Will that work with a reverse flow Okla Joe?
Did you get any leaks after installing the screws? Do you put your water pan on the cooking surface or down below 👇🏻 next to the fire box opening?
I have a baffle plate in my Oklahoma Joe Highland and BBQ Smoker Mods web site said not to use this if your smoker has the baffle plate.
Yes that’s keeping the air down underneath … I don’t run the baffle
Hi from jolly old England love the video have you seen the letzq tandoori ring for the kamado it looks great I was wondering what you think

Where did you order this part
On this video where do I find that air relocation vent for Oklahoma Joe smoker. Would like to order one thanks...
In ordered from bbq smoker mods
Would an offset make that big of a difference vs a smokey mountain
Do you have a link for the site? Thanks
Is there any way that a person could have installed one of these smokers inside their basement or house?
Wheres the link to the vent that you installed

Where did you purchase the part installed in the video?

What size but was used to drill for the bolts? Thank you
shoot i don't remember, i just matched the bit to the screws and ended up needing to go up a few sizes to get them to slide through
How do you get heighth of stack extension i need? I have a very similar one to you but its a dyna glo off set
I looked up the calculator and entered my pit dimensions
Would you add any mods to the highland reverse flow smoker?
Yes the semi insulated fire box, stack extension would both help
How do you clean out the ash built up during a cook with the semi insulated box when your not using a grate to raise up the fire?
Most dryer duct is aluminum. So take a magnet when you buy an elbow
right on
Why not just order an additional chimney stack pipe from Oklahoma Joe's?

I have this mod on my Oklahoma Joe smoker. My smoker never gets above 300°F. Most of my cooks are in the 225-250°F range.
I don’t either which is why I wasn’t concerned and showed it but judging by the comments you’d think my video had a death wish for humanity so I thought I would show the temps it takes to get close and provide an alternative
I like not being poisoned
I don’t mind a little poison 😂
Swap the terminology intake for exhaust and we're good
Dang one take tongue tied typos 😂. Cheers 🍻
smoke is comming from the bottem
ya this pit is not air tight
So couldn't you just use a torch to burn the zinc off outside in open air before using it in the smoker to be safe ?
