  • We have some brand new "old fashioned" lumber to reframe the attic opening.
    We finish building the box-joint jig in the woodshop. Will it work?
    Jeanie heard your suggestions for the Victorian drapes, and we'll be showing you what they look like.

    Beautiful box and curtains! Typical drapery fullness is 2x the width of the opening for weight and graceful folds. Draperies are not just for privacy, though! They can be as tall and wide as you like to change the feel and scale of the room. If you have tall ceilings, placing the rod higher, and making the drape longer, closer to the floor, will carry the eye upward and make the room feel bigger. With heavy brocades, you are also adding some insulation and sound dampening. Weights in the corners will make them hang straighter, or can buy weighted cord that can be sewn into the hem.

    I like the drapes! Something else they used to do back in the day to keep those old farmhouses warm, was to make what they called a "window quilt" which were drapes that were insulted and quilted and hung up in the winter to keep out drafts and the cold.

    Drapes in a home of this period should go all the way to the floor in my opinion. It looks too modern to have the drapes stop at the bottom of the window. Love the box construction jig, that was cool.

    I loved the music, very smooth! I kept wondering what a box joint was, until I caught on that it was dove-tailed. Jeanie, those drapes are lovely. I understand why folks keep saying they need to go to the floor, but my goodness, I would think you would be spending a fortune on the fabric alone. They are perfect for what you need now, in my opinion. Stay warm, and safe until I get to see your next video. 💖💖

    I like the curtains with one panel on each side , I was taught years ago curtains should be 2.5 X's the width of the window so I try to get close to that I've done 2 X's and it's worked fine I think the fabric of the curtain allows variables in the 2.5 width for example thinner fabric like cotton looks gorgeous doing the curtain 2.5x's the width of the window but a tapestry fabric looks good 2x's the width plus allows you to see bit more of the pattern along with fullness. Excellent video and team work you two.

    Ooo, have you thought of putting in a drop-down stair in that space? If you have to enlarge the area, make it large enough to install one and eliminate lugging up the latter. It'll also be easier when you do any maintenance on the HAVC . Jeanne, the drapes lo😅ok so much better with the fuller panels. That is very heavy material and when I've used heavy fabric I always had pinch pleats so it was hard for me to determine even though it looked like the covering was being stretched. I also have used the rod pocket but only with sheer curtains, and then I always used 3Xs the window width. Consequently, your curtains look really nice. Oh, I forgot. Have you considered using the gold lace down the other side as well? It might look more balanced plus you would have gold up against the gold braiding, thus tying in the
    gold better.

      Definitely consider the drop down stairs. I did have to add a bit on the legs so that they sit flat on the floor under our 9ft ceiling. I have seen some sliding stairs (rather than folding) but have no info about cost and availability.

    I like your draperies over the lace panel. I've done something similar in our 1890's house and the key to a more authentic look is layering. You've done a lovely job and those panels should help keep some of your heat in as well as blocking the summer sun later on.

    So that’s how you make a box jig. Very interesting it really was. Now you can start making all kind of things. Jeannie, your curtains look so much fuller now but I think they should have been longer. But they definitely serve the purpose of keeping light out n hopefully keep some cold from coming inside.

    Unless that nice straight green 2x material is stored flat and stickered and maybe even banded together, it will not be straight when it is drier. It will react exactly like the wet pressure treated stuff from box stores. You carefully select the straightest available, bring them home, put them in the garage and a few week later they are all sorts of warped and twisted.
    If you are putting HVAC in this attic, then you really need easier access than a ladder. Why not put in actual pull down stairs? No one wants to haul a ladder up stairs just to change the air filter!
    As for the drapes. They are too short for such heavy fabric and they need to be on traverse rods so they open and close. Drapes with actual pleats at the top, with pins into the holes in a traverse rod, also make the drape look neat. Drapes should hang straight. The rods are meant for fabric like the lacy stuff, but they don't work with heavy drape material. It just leaves the drape splayed out and looking well not good.
    Really drapes fall into 2 categories. Ones for looks and ones for function. Functional ones that open and close need traverse rods and no tie back. Ones that never move, can have tie backs. But fabric of that thickness needs to be floor length and on traverse rods in order to look right.

  • @marywise2703
    @marywise2703 5 месяцев назад +3

    The drapes are way too short. Raise the rod to the ceiling and make the drapes graze the floor. More in keeping with the style of the house
