What did you think? Do you think you'd visit a sento / public bath house? Are you worried about going because you have tattoos? (95% of Tokyo's sentos are tattoo friendly including all I visited here) Leave me a comment or share your Japanese bath experience below :) -john
I think I said this before on another video, but Hasunuma might have to go on our itinerary for when my wife and I go to Japan in a year or two. It's so cute! Thanks for the great video!
That means a lot to me! A lot of work went into making this at 5 sento around Tokyo. It isn't getting much play because of my mistake this morning with the upload so I hope the focus of this episode isn't lost in that. It needs to be seen for sure!
I have so much respect for you John. You have so much dedication and responsibility to your content. It is reflected in your videos. I'm so glad that I discovered your channel three years ago. Sending you positive vibes from NYC 💪
I never skip each episode of only in Japan. I love each episode. It's amazing to think that each episode is made by only single person. Keep up the amazing work. 👍👍👍
What brings me to to find out more of the Japanese Culture is, that I admire them for the respect and honor they have for their Parents, Grandparent's whether they are well or ailing. I have heard this for so long. So why not learn more about this Culture, thanks for all this new to me,,,, info.
Thank you for all of your hard work. My family and I are coming to Tokyo in March and while it won't be as cold to enjoy the full onsen experience, you have piqued my interest in sentos so I will definitely try one, especially to reset my biological clock when it comes to jet lag (I'm from L.A.), since having a warm bath helps me sleep. Don't be too hard on yourself. Your channel helps cheer me up when I miss Japan.
This is a good no, a great video showing the way Japan is trying to bring the public baths back into popularity. I like the mix of traditional and modern houses, retro & cyber building fans are all catered for. I would visit many of these places as who doesn't like to lounge in warm water to relax. Do any of the houses offer a family day/time when children are permitted or can little ones be brought in at any time of day?
there is something i really like about the host. to be honest, it's not really for any good reason, but i tend to find japanophile gaijin dudes, especially ones that make youtube videos to be pretty annoying and douchey. but this guy is really charming and entertaining. great work!
I find it hard to belive this was your first electric bath! I only lived in Nagoya for less then a year and was taken to sento with electric baths at every possible opportunity by locals. Great episode! There is nothing as wonderful as being hot and run down as you're walking around a Japanese city and coming across a sento. So rejuvenating!
I were actually watching Begin Japanologys episode about Sento last night when youtube notified me about this video. Big up for handling everything as you are and a big thanks for years of great videos!
I loved this video! I've only 'really' seen bath houses in animes LOL Really really great to see this and how amazing they truly are! Kudos to you for trying the electric bath - also...hilarious lol
It's ok John, don't trouble to much, that's why we support you, you choose always such a good topics, you hard vlogger and about this last streaming the Sento's Tokyo tour is once again full informatives. Thanks you! And keep it up!
Fantastic episode - fascinated by all things sento and onsen, so this episode was a real treat! Thanks for your consistently good content - don't sweat the minor editing thing, you are clearly a great guy and stuff like that happens from time to time.
These bath houses are crazy! When I used to go, as did most of the neighborhood because hardly any homes had a tub, the exterior of the bath houses looked like the first one you went to. They were the most amazing buildings. Seeing the interiors that you showed are so different. Used to be faucets close together, no shower, everyone took their own basin which held your towels, soap, and fresh yukata. The baths were not only steaming but STINGINGLY hot. I was surprised at the ease you got in the baths. There were no gardens, nothing fancy. They were every day life. Thank you for the memories and showing how they evolved in to a luxurious experience.
I just started watching three of your videos & still watching...loving it & very ethnic educational which is so nice to watch and with a good sense of humor to put a smile on your viewers. I love to know more ...
This is a great video. The history of the Takarayu sento and how it was built is very fascinating. A visit to any of these bath houses in and around the the city would truly make a for a wonderful and relaxing experience. Thanks so much, John!
I like how it’s a slower process. Instead of just a shower at home. We live such fast lives now, it’s nice to just stop, wash off, sit in the hot water with or without others. It’s a good way to slow down at the end of the day
hi, john. I loved this video so much. Thank you. When I was kid I used to go bathhouse. and now they got much nicer. This video brings back my childhood memory. Thank you.
I can see that this video took a LOT of work! Much respect! The garden at Takarayu is lovely and I want it in my back yard. I would go just for that. I love the arcitecture of the building and enjoyed hearing about how it was built entirely by hand. Thanks for bringing Japan to those of us who don't get to travel much. Never thought much about visiting Japan, but now thanks to you, we do! Keep up the great work! :)
Great video John, please don't be discouraged and keep up the great work! :) Glad you were able to get the new video up so quick! I love watching your videos, makes me want to visit Japan ASAP!
The baths at the Koyasan Temple's are very traditional. They were our first Japanese bath experiences. All cedar construction for example. Very impressive.
its really nice to hear that places are becoming more accepting towards tattoos in places like this. i have many tattoos and have always been worried about some places like bath houses not being cool with tattoos
Thank you John for another informative video. I've learned a lot. I hear people talk about onsens but not so much about sentos. They look great too, and for that price - I wouldn't want to miss this experience.
I like the prices in japanese bath hauses and also the interior looks so relaxing. I can´t wait to try it myself one day. Keep doing your great work John! I am looking forward to your next video! A lot of support from Slovakia!!! :)
Awesome & I really learnt something about Sento As It Is All About Japanese Culture & I'm glad to see to know about Japanese Public Bath so it is a worth experience to see what's about in Japan are all about. Great.
Awesome job john keep it up and don't worry about the first upload it's cool I seriously think no one was like omg! These things happen you work hard and you can miss some things it's all good in the hood!
This is a really cool episode. I like the music choices for the different sentos and the special effects. (Poof, you've changed 😁) 👍👍 the hair dryer and the electric shock were my favorite. I couldn't stop laughing at your facial expressions. 😂😂😂😂😂
On my first trip to Japan in 1984 I was taken to the neighborhood sento by the Waseda student who was hosting me. It was a cool, culturally infused experience getting naked with a bunch of guys, cleaning up and soaking in a hot tub (don't mind the old lady randomly mopping). Great idea for a video showing something that is a link to the past. My wife remembers visiting the neighborhood sento with her grandmother.
I went to SENTO almost every day from 3 to 12 years old, on the outskirts of Tokyo. Playing with my friends in a narrow alley, mothers tell us to go SENTO when it open at 3pm. We would each put soap and a gourd sponge in a washbasin and go to SENTO with 7 or 8 kids. We played a game putting soap on our bottoms, grabbed the edge of the bathtub, kicked the tile , and the boy who slid the furthest won. Japanese adults like hot bath, but it was too hot for us kids. When I tried to pouring water from a big tap, severely scolded by the old man immersed in hot water up to his mouth. On the way home, we stopped at a butcher's and bought croquettes with the 5 yen change from SENTO, and eat on the way home. I'm very happy that world people are interested in Japanese SENTO.
i really love this specific video of yours John....because i love going to Sento , but in Japan its very different....this is awesome and informative......thanks John...
at the time the video is not monetize yet. Just around few minutes after the been published. You can tell the video been monetized by a yellow dot on the progress bar or an ad play before the main video start
Great video. The tips will help me for sure. Thanks for putting them in your video. Great views of all the different types of bath houses. Very cool. LMAO on the hair dryer. Good one John. :p
Thanks so much for this video! As a tattooed foreigner living in Japan, I always get so anxious about being rejected from onsen and sento. Ill definitely check these out!
Thank you for a great video! I loved seeing the variety of bath houses and what they offer. It really brings me back to my childhood where the water was heated with fire and wood. In my opinion, for some reason, those baths felt a lot different, possibly better than the gas/electric heated baths. Aloha from Hawaii!
I went to the bath house all the time while living in Japan when I was a kid. We went on an overnight field trip to Mt. Fuji when I was in 5th grade. We went to the bathhouse before bed. I’m half Japanese so was very familiar with Japanese culture. Our teacher told us to take our clothes of to shower before hopping in the bath. I was the first to take off all my clothes and my classmates looked at me like I was crazy. 🤣 once I was naked my classmates followed.
I've only ever bathed in Kyoto Sento and Onsen in Hakuba.. I had no idea that Tokyo had them too! Definitely going on my list to try one next time I return to Japan.
That makes me so happy to know that this episode is useful - to be honest, I didn’t know there were Onsen in Tokyo (besides Monogatari in Odaiba) until about 2 years ago!! Now I go to the sento more often to be a part of my neighborhood. It’s so cool to get to know my neighbors - the bath breaks down barriers and people are just people in there.
What did you think? Do you think you'd visit a sento / public bath house? Are you worried about going because you have tattoos? (95% of Tokyo's sentos are tattoo friendly including all I visited here) Leave me a comment or share your Japanese bath experience below :) -john
Oh no the great view from 3:50 has gone!
Can you do a video on Nara Park (feeding the deer and info like that)? :)
I would totally go but I feel like I would be stared at more than other foreigners
Just finished watching. John, you can be very proud of this video. Seriously, it is *great*; I hope it gets lots of views.
I think I said this before on another video, but Hasunuma might have to go on our itinerary for when my wife and I go to Japan in a year or two. It's so cute! Thanks for the great video!
I have watched many different videos, but its because of this wonderful host. he brings so much interest and excitement to each video.
I always leave a like to support this channel. Best produced content
That means a lot to me! A lot of work went into making this at 5 sento around Tokyo. It isn't getting much play because of my mistake this morning with the upload so I hope the focus of this episode isn't lost in that. It needs to be seen for sure!
Watch again after you re-uploaded. Respect.
First time I'm catching it. So glad I watched the re-upload and not the original. Love you, John!
I can't wait for everything to truly open back up.
I really enjoy that electric shock scene, I truly didn't expect to laugh when watching an onsen video.
This and when his face is inside the hair dryer.
I have so much respect for you John. You have so much dedication and responsibility to your content. It is reflected in your videos. I'm so glad that I discovered your channel three years ago. Sending you positive vibes from NYC 💪
It looks like a great way to relax in the hustle and bustle of the city. That's something that's much needed.
I never skip each episode of only in Japan. I love each episode. It's amazing to think that each episode is made by only single person. Keep up the amazing work. 👍👍👍
John's videos always persuade people to go to Japan! He makes me think Japan is the most fun place to live.
Hope I get there to experience it one day.
Sent (and onsen) is a big part of why I love Japan.
I try to go to a sento or onsen at least a few times a week, specially during winter time.
What brings me to to find out more of the Japanese Culture is, that I admire them for the respect and honor they have for their Parents, Grandparent's whether they are well or ailing. I have heard this for so long. So why not learn more about this Culture, thanks for all this new to me,,,, info.

He has me wanting to visit Japan sooo bad. The only thing I'd be skeptical of is the food and the language barrier. But I wanna go!
@De St The food looks like alot of fish and raw meats. I love fish, but it has to be cooked.
You REALLY need a tv spot. These series are perfect and insightful!
I find it hard to belive this was your first electric bath! I only lived in Nagoya for less then a year and was taken to sento with electric baths at every possible opportunity by locals. I’ve learned so much from your channel, I hope to visit Japan some day.

Hello bro it's awesome thank you for video
You’re videos are becoming a guide for me for my future trip to Japan
On my first trip to Japan in 1984 I was taken to the neighborhood sento by the Waseda student who was hosting me. Sweet memories on the electric bath. From what I was told, supposedly, it's good for the circulation. Great video!
I love watching your adventures
Thank you for a great video! I loved seeing the variety of bath houses and what they offer. It really brings me back to my childhood where the water was heated with fire and wood. I went to the bath house all the time while living in Japan when I was a kid. We went on an overnight field trip to Mt. Fuji when I was in 5th grade. We went to the bathhouse before bed.
