All you have to do is put the piston at TDC and push slightly past TDC. It will easily kick over and not kick back on you. This makes starting any engine much easier.

Kickback is insane cause you’re jabbing the throttle when you’re kicking lol. Try priming the throttle once or twice and then kick. Also turn your bars to the left so you don’t knee the bars
Watched many of your vids and this is actually the first healthy 2 stroke 250 you've purchased. Stay far away from the big bore 2 strokes till you get better starting this 250r. Buy a proper running 85-85 ATC 250r. 1 less tire with this quads engine equates to INSANE!
my 250r has 165 psi on a fresh build . ive got well over 120 hours and it still has 140 psi of compression . when built properly that 250r will be the most reliable quad youll ever own . ive had mine since 2001
Dropping 25psi in 120hrs of run time is not to be considered reliable lol. This is an extremely high strung two stroke that burns thru top ends as fast as a gallon of pre mix race fuel lol. The 450r is reliable though probley something to do with the fact it is a bigger bore four stroke.

Hey man I watched your video and thought I would throw you a few tips. First your doing little kicks trying to start it. you should be going 3/4 of the travel of the kick arm when you kickstart it. Jump up and with that one leg on the kick arm come down with your weight and kick it over.. Second check your fuel petcock it looked like you where closing it. Straight down is normally open. Third two stroke's are fast "reving" they climb rpms fast which is what makes two strokes so desirable but, they don't like to be held wide open or at really high rpm for two long of a period of time (at least in dirtbike motors boat motors are different) if you do this alot you will be changing the top end pretty frequently. If you want to cruise keep it at low rpm in any gear or do what 2 stroke's are great at and get from point A to point B as fast as you can by climbing rpms until you feel the power stop pulling and then shift. And now the video ended and I saw you have a few other bikes so you probably know all this already. But maybe it will help someone else. 😐 Cool bike man.

You got to prime the kick starter until it’s at the top of the stroke, then when you kick it you have to kick straight down with your body weight, as in stand on it when your stomping down. Don’t hesitate, don’t try to step up and then stomp, and quit kicking with only your leg. Stand on it as your kicking down... I’ve owned 9, and the forward kick is just awkward to get used to
2vintage it's not they way your kicking it. It's most likely your CDI like a few others said. I've been having the same trouble on my ESR 330. I have owned it for 20 years and never had kickback issues. I have had a fully ported OEM hi comp. cylinder and ESR 310 cylinder and never had kickback. I'm still doing some testing, borrowed a friends CDI to test further this weekend. Honda discontinued new CDI's and aftermarket ones are junk. Try to find a good used OEM one, any year will work. KIckbacks no joke, feels like it'll break your foot. Had a buddy who's nearly nearly 300lbs. and has an R also, he gave up....said F that!

I know this comment is 3 years old but I’ve noticed my 4stroke yz450 kicks back mainly when I try to kick and and give it throttle…. Is that why it’s kicking back because of the throttle?
So basically you’re kickstarting it wrong what you do is when you get up to do the kick stroke you take your left foot off the peg and you go down with all your weight so your body weight is what’s doing the kicking. You don’t have to kick with your knee like that, that way it won’t kick you back. Your weight keeps the kick starter down.
Sweet 250R, get rid of the PJ carb, and get a PWK . You get that backfire because it is to rich. Check your plug and do some plug chops after either re-jetting, or swapping carbs. Ince again, sweet 250R and thanks for the video.
1st. Super nice 250r!! Best racing 4wheeler ever made IMO. 2nd. Watching you trying to kick start it, is like watching a Democratic debate. It sucked the life out of me. Just kick it. If it don't start in 1-3 kicks something wrong with it.
I had the pleasure of riding one, 1 time years ago. It was an absolutely terrifying pleasure. I enjoyed every second of that damn thing trying to kill me.
If that bike doesn’t have the OEM cdi box on It will be the worst thing to try and start. Also sounds like the idle is really high or it has a airleak somewhere possibly. Definitely has a stock cylinder and stock PJ kehin 34mm carb on it.
The reason why the bike was so hard to start in the beginning is because there’s a process to starting the 250r. What your suppose do do is lean all the way back and slowly put the kick starter all the way down then you lift it half way up and kick it as hard as you can. It’s always worked on my Honda
Then maybe the compression is a little too high or you got a really good engine either way I loved the vid and try that trick some time. Long Live The R
