On a slightly grim note, but I like to imagine that Moon Dogs are created from the souls (or animal equivalent of a soul) of "martyred" dogs. Basically, when a dog sacrifices themselves to protect someone, they are reborn in Elysium as Moon Dogs, just like mortal petitioner souls can eventually become archons. Except moon dogs skip the trial phase, since they already proved themselves to be the best boys.
I'm going to borrow this.

On the subject of Celestial canines, Armenian mythology has a creature called the Aralez. In Armenian mythology, the Aralez is a dog-like creature with wings that descends from the heavens to revive fallen heroes by licking their wounds. So, they would basically good terms with a lot of gods that connected with valor and healing in a D&D-type setting. The Moon Dog's aspects and healing ability, especially how it is applied, probably draws on the Aralez as an inspiration to some extent.
That sounds like an amazing steed for a gnome paladin, as well as a great way for a party to have a dog without worrying about it dying in combat (Can paladins get their steeds to deliver Lay On Hands for them, like wizard familiars casting spells? Screw it, I'm allowing it in this case)

I believe there are also "moon dogs" in Chinese mythology I'm not sure of all of their features but very cool how different cultures have similar things
I think the perfect way to reveal the Moondog's telepathy is to wait until the very end of the session and have it respond to a player calling it a "good boy" with "Yes, I am good boy!" After having acted like a normal dog (with human hands) for the entire session
Ha! In my third time playing when we all decided to make monster characters, I made a Moon Dog Paladin archetype named Good Boy with a demonic messenger called The Maelman as his arch nemesis. The character was amazingly fun to play and OP as hell with all the options for barks, spells and doing things like calling up his Planetar BFF Carl to do things like storm the nine hells. So it's a funny cooncidence that you mentioned a lot of that in this vid.

You see a happy goodboi you wish to pet, before you can deliver scritches he telepathically stops you and informs you he doesn't require pets from mortals, he has his own hands and he is already best boy and requires no affirmations. He shows you his hands, you freak out and attack him, he howls and jacks up your entire party and a pillar a light slams into the ground behind your party as a Demigod walks out angry from it shouting "WHO DAFUQ IS MESSING WITH MY DOG!?" Roll Initiative.
This could absolutely sell an ancient folklore kind of good diety. Imagine you’ve completed your quest and as night falls a stray dog comes up to your campfire acts cute and then reveals their human hands and starts eerily congratulating the players. It just gives a very like early 20th century American folklore/“Harrow county” vibe

In my game, there is a chance to encounter 3 Tridrones wandering around talking nonsense. Their names are Gryphon, Travels, and Justice, and they host an advice show for the Modron era
Manticores aren't celestial; if you're going to be that loose with the grouping, then a mind-flayer would fit the shellfish

The 3rd edition picture of the moondog just makes me laugh. I can just imagine the people working on this book saying something like, "those human hands look so off-putting. We need to make them more natural." " You went too far now no one can tell they have an opposable thumb!" "Fixed it! I just made them hold a dear skull." XD

I once ran an awakened animal campaign, one of my players was a dog warlock with a Alpha Moon Dog as his patron. He helped a single mother recover her family's tailoring shop and get out of poverty...

Indeed, it did.
In the end, even thou he expected no reward, his efforts had her make him a cloak, but she used a jewel that had a dog worker's spirit from her grandmother's day attached to it.. the cloak gave foes targeting him disadvantage, and the spirit attached could once a day cast a misty step before he would get hit on him (I got to choose where she took him) before the campaign climax.
That didn't end up getting much use, sadly..
But she also asked him to let her adopt him when(if) he made it back.

These dudes HAVE to be a reference to Moondog, the musician/composer, right? That's pretty cool. They've got human hands so they can play the great jazz tunes their namesake composed!
A moondog is another name for a paraselene, or moonbow. The moonbow is a rainbow's nocturnal grayscale equivalent. They don't have human hands, but they should.
A Moon dog appears in front of you, and telephatically introduces itself "I am a very GOOD boy! and I would like you assistance". Also a Moon dog doing the shake command results in a firm confident handshake.
Loot Studios did a really pretty afghan hound inspired dog model for one of their more recent stl releases. The dog saved two teens in the desert and helped raise them until the brother decided to seek after his father's position as the king of thieves- so now the dog stays with the sister, providing assistance and protection.
I was originally thinking of using this dog as sort of a leader of blink dogs- a Blink Dog Matriarch or something. But Moon Dog also fits really well! Having a character- player or NPC- that has this ridiculously helpful doggo around, only for that dog to turn out to actually be a celestial that's been hiding its nature the whole time? In a setting that's a desert created by a demon lord of gluttony taking every good and living thing from the surrounding lands? Sounds neat!

The name makes me think of the show "Gidget" and except for the Human Hands part seems cute.
Funny idea: They do summon a devil, because they are fighting another devil who serves under the one they summoned but they've been in hiding and cheating their master out of deals and power. Basically the dog calls their boss to drag them back, and even if the boss doesn't come themselves they'd probably send someone else to get them, so even if they somehow won against the players their boss is on their tail again
If I remember right, one of the other mentions of things tied to the Mood Dog from prior editions is that their saliva can break the curse of lycanthropes...implied to be specifically for werewolves there, but not directly stated as such
If Gabriel from the Mandela catalogue and Falcor from The NeverEnding Story had a love child, it's that moon dog with the pendant from the thumbnail.
this made me think of a warlock whose patron is their old pet moon dog
3 things.
1, it would be interesting if they had some sort of effect or interaction with other moon creatures covered in this channel, say, acting as hunting hounds for a Moon Giant, or being in collaboration with moon rats as a part of a secret society. Or, playing into the canine approach, maybe one of them is the avatar of a Lupin god, possibly even the one responsible for altering their werewolf origins?
2, if they're dogs, do they have breeds, and if so, how does that affect their personality? Are moon bulldogs more justice-oriented, law-giving paragons? Do moon bloodhounds act like detectives, sniffing out adverse extraplanar entities? Do moon beagle packs ambush demon cults with magic howling? Do moon collies herd flocks of parishioners?
3, as an avid dog lover, it is now essential that I incorporate these good boys into my games as a DM. There will be head scratches.
For a time I believed it was from H.P. Lovecraft... Why, you may ask?
In Pathfinder 1st edition, the Moon Dog appears in the same book and a few short pages after the Moon Beast who are evil and have moon in their name... They also look pretty dog-like from their image.
And so, I believed that these lurkers on the moon of the dream world often combated Moon Dogs... In retrospect, it should've been more clear that was not the case since neither mentions the other in their lore, but as I later read old D&D monster books for fun, I did eventually discover the Moon Dog did not hail from H.P. Lovecraft (as a lot of older books do not draw from such sources directly).
It does fit into the mythology of the dream quest series. Along with the cats and the moon rats.
After many years, a monster I finally know about.

Moondog and Yeth hound seems like (to me at least) a tenuous reference to the different cat ( dreamland cats and saturn cats) of Lovecraft dream cycle of unknown Kadath.

Point of information: when discussing the City of Doors, "Sigil" is pronounced with a hard G. Pronouncing it "sijil" can get you the death penalty if you're there. This is Canon from the original Planescape boxed set for AD&D 2nd Edition.
He's based his pronunciation off the new videos from WotC who have since said there is no hard G.

The Pathfinder version builds the moon theme more towards subterfuge, giving them some illusion magic and sneak attack. When everything else fails, they have greater shadow conjuration as their one per day trumph card.

I wonder if they knuckle walk or move with their "hands" being plantigrade. I suppose digigrade could also work, it's how I do short bursts of all fours when playing with my doggos and cats.
They waddle on their hind legs while running their fingers through their luxurious coat. If your were a dog with hands, wouldn't you opt for the permanent belly rub while walking?

Cool creature. I actually prefer the first depiction of it, its more unique, actually kind of cute and captures the mood of it quite well. The latter depiction feel more like a werewolf

Potential plot idea:
In a murder mystery plot there's a strange old lady who hires the party to find the killer who has a funny looking pet dog always chilling in her purse. Once the players find the killer/killers they are confronted by them in combat only for the old lady to jump in to help. the players think its a "secretly powerful the whole time old lady" twist but she falls apart revealed to be an illusion and they were actually working for the moon dog the whole time

A cool plot hook that involves the moon dog summoning a planar ally that is fiendish in nature could involve a celestial (hurt or low level) coming to the party because their moon dog companion is becoming corrupted. The party can then try to break this corruption and return thr moon dog to its good aligned ways
