- Dead Mall: Columbia Place Mall - Columbia, SC. Enjoy a drive around and walk inside of this large aesthetic mall just northeast of the state capital of South Carolina. At nearly 1,100,000 square feet in size, it is one of the largest malls in the state. Sadly, the mall has been in decline for many years. Moonbeam Capital Investments taking over the mall in 2014 did not help at all. Amazingly, in 2023, despite being dead, the mall still looks great and in good condition inside. Hopefully, it'll stay this way for a while, but sadly, given Moonbeam's track record, it's only a matter of time until it looks like their other mall properties the company has neglected.

Its kinda sad that today's young people will hardly know the fun of a day at the mall , shopping , lunch and maybe a movie 😢
When my hometown had a mall up north I can rest assure you it was not as nice inside. There was smoke from the smoke shop getting in the vents. Rats were running around and when it got more dead and more closed. Rats ran the place. They made it so you couldn't walk in there anymore and you had to go to the outside stores.
Right
The movie theater wasn't actually in the mall. It was to the right of the front entrance. I think the last movie I remember seeing there was The Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton.
Well if the young society knew how to act. It wouldn't be dead
Facts I lived 5 mins from that mall as a kid I remember that mall so fondly
I remember when this mall opened and in the late 80's and 90's it would be so crowded you could hardly walk around.
There's video on RUclips of this mall in the 80s, and it's like I remember malls used to be. Think this place opened in '77 tho?
I remember coming here as a kid it was so full of life and energy and now when you go it's just dead.
Im 21 now and it saddens me to see the mall in this state. But the crime and violence in that area has gotten out of control.
I know...should they nuke the place?

As a Columbia resident, I can say this was the biggest and best mall in Columbia in the 80's, used to come here a lot on Friday nights. But unfortunately this mall is in a bad part of town, so you get the riff raff and they kept a lot of people away and the mall began to die as the stores closed and moved away.
Yeah my parents told me story's about gang fights 😅
The norf ain't that bad... okay maybe a lil 😂
The hood rats took over, this place was rocking in the 80’s.spent a lot of time here😢
I was there years ago when a police officer was mugged in the bathroom. Never went back again.
2009 was lit at this mall ❤️💫nostalgic... I still live around the way it's sad how this beautiful space isn't being invested into.
Apartments. Make it into a unique living venue!
I've been to this mall many times over the years including in the last 4 months. It's actually making quite a comeback. Not much in terms of big box stores... a few... but lots of mom and pops which appear to be doing ok. Food court still in operation. Even though it isn't what it was in it's hey day it's still a VERY NICE option to Amazon, etc.
IMO This mall was too dangerous to shop at for years. Columbian/Harbinson mall is following down the same path. So disappointing that locals refuse to handle these issues.
I know, right?!
It got so bad in this mall at one point, Richland County Sheriff had a large station right by the food court. I think the crime rate in the area had more to do with the downfall than Moonbeam did...
I heard Richland county wanted to buy it and make it an office building
@@donniegreenway8401 The ENTIRE thing?! Would they be able to put all of their vehicles in it? Lol. I'm not trying to be disrespectful I'm just saying it's a HUGE place. That's all.
@@alexkx8599 Yohu have to understand the changes that have gone on in society. If'n you know what I mean.
I swear this place used to be so packed when I was a little great memories there
Big facts
I remember when they opened the food court in an effort to revitalize the mall. My dad took us out to eat and it was packed. Took almost an hour standing in line for Chick-fil-A.
My son and I were at this mall 4 years ago. It just blew my mind how such a big, magnificent building could be so empty.
To many people have gotten shot and killed here smh.
This is a dangerous area in Columbia. Unfortunately much of the city has become dangerous. Shootings every day. So much crime and drugs. When this place was open, my husband would not allow me to go. It's unreal what has happened to our country. I can't wait to move away from here. Lord have mercy! ☦️😓

Moonbeam enough said...look at what they did to Century III Mall now the town wants it demoed but Moonbeam added security there and says there's a potential "buyer" I highly doubt it. Hope the town condemns the building and demolishes it charging Moonbeam the cost of demolish and the $80,000 in code violations.
Thank you for this walk back down memory lane. THIS was our hangout when I was in high school back in the late 80's/early 90's. Even after I graduated, we would still come and hangout just because.
When I was in the Met a few years ago, it was sad to even drive through the parking lot. Was weird not seeing the Best Buy across the street as well.
This is such a beautiful Mall wow. Liking all the unique architecture and definitely pleasing to the eye. Awesome job brother and thanks for sharing.
This place is a beautiful mall. I think I might have been there once or twice in my youth passing through Columbia on the few trips I've been on the the mountains, but I definitely grew up with the citidal mall and Northwoods malls throughout my youth. I used to love eating with my grandma at those tables with the umbrellas overhead in the food court in the citidel mall as a kid. The memories that brings back are some of my favorite. Anyway, really awesome that you do all this. Love what you do.❤️
Sad to see malls today fall apart and not have any business. All old and shuttered memories are some of the worst and malls hold those unforgettable memories. Childhood memories of so many people most likely reside inside of it and can't be relieved. Thanks for the video Wallie!!
I do security, 👮🏼♂️ central FL, since 2000. To see a large retail space empty or at night is wierd. Malls, like office 🏢 are slowly drifting away. Florida has a few malls, spaces becoming assisted living 🏘 low income homes.
Thanks for the video! I worked there in 1984 and I have a lot of great memories.
i really recommend dutch square mall. its possibly the deadest and smallest mall ive seen. very pretty and vintage went with my parents about 3 months ago!
Can I second this request since I live right down the road from there? And I can vouch for how dead it is
Yeah now all it is is a Planet Fitness and an AMC theatre
Right Dutch square mall and Richland fashion Mall.
Wow! So many memories at this mall. One Christmas I was shopping with my mother and she asked me and my friend to take all the gifts to the car. We put them in the trunk of our car and came back in the mall to meet her. When we left we opened the trunk of her car and none of the packages were there. We received a call that someone had all our packages as we had put them in the wrong car! Same model, same color, and the trunk was open... That's how good people used to be back then.
I sat on Santa's lap and asked for presents every year here.
We would eat at Morrison's Cafeteria near the main entrance at least once a month.
I found a twenty dollar bill on the steps leading down to the first floor. It was the first time I'd found so much money. It didn't last long being i was already at the mall.
We would hang out here on weekends and take dates to the movie theatre.
I got my car serviced at Tire Kingdom and used to eat pizza at the pizza place across the street...cant remember the name. Circuit City was out back and also a Toys r Us.
I used to skip school and spend hours playing Street Fighter 2 at Aladdin's Castle. There was a Foot Locker, Spencers, and best of all an Electronics Boutique for all the gamers.
So many memories... This video brings back all the feels.
I literally live right around the corner from this mall. I’m 33 and 20 years ago this mall was so much fun from the food court, eb games (shortly changed to GameStop in the early 2000’s), and the movie theater that was next to the mall it was a great place to come and hang with friends and hit on chicks and have fun. Today this mall is desolate and empty and only have a handful of stores now, the food court is still thriving I guess lol I haven’t been inside the mall in some years and I still live around the corner but man it hurts to see it this way.
Sandhills ultimately killed the mall, and all the wealthy people moved further out towards the summit and all the businesses left or dried up. Seeing this makes me want to hit up Hero's for Korean BBQ and Very's for the Cheese Steaks.
@@vincentbatten4686 I completely agree and don’t get me started lol imma go get me some right now!!

@WallieB26 Nice video of the beautiful Columbia Place Mall. I especially like the pictures from the past of the Mall. Keep up the good work. Thumbs Way Up!!!
Dang I remember going to this mall growing up. A far cry from what it used to be. Crime has driven alot of big stores away, Columbiana Mall is the only mall that still gets busy in Columbia, everyone just goes there if they want to shop at a mall. Every mall besides Columbiana has failed in the region. Pretty sad.
Hey! I know that mall! I grew up going to that mall! ... fun fact, those stair cases were "architectural innovation" and were rhe first set of floating staircases in SC at the time. Still my favourite mall in the Columbia area. Shame it went down. I remember renting my suit for proms there.
I live near here, though it wasn't my mall growing up. There's a few dead and dying malls around here, like Dutch Square which is basically only alive cause of the AMC inside
Yeah, that and the planet Fitness. And the Richland Place Mall which is just a Barnes and Noble repository.
@@vincentbatten4686 Richland Mall is now closed and torn down for apartments
Such a sad beautiful mall. I live close to Myrtle Beach SC, our mall is coastal grand mall. CBL and Burroughs and Chaplin owns it, 2 joint owners and it's going very very good
I remember going there in the 80’sThe mall was rocking.I wish I had taken more pictures 😊
I remember this mall since the day they day they broke ground. In the early 80’s this place was a vibrant center for kids. Your parents would drop you off early in the day and pick you up late in the evening. Radio Shack was downstairs and had the TRS80, “Trash 80”, and the TI 99, the computers ever in stores around the Columbia area. Schiano’s Pizza was upstairs and had the student special, two slices of pie and a drink for a few bucks. Chick-Fil-A was downstairs and always handed out free samples of their new chicken. They also had a great lemon meringue pie. On Christmas Eve we did all our shopping and converged on Mr. Dunderbacks, a German food store with loads of coocoo clocks and drink beer till late in the evening. They always let our group stay hours after the mall was closed. The most expensive item in the mall in 1981 was an organ in the organ store, $14,000 - we spent an entire day looking in every store to find that out. You met your friends there, more than likely your first girl/boy friend. It was a great place, but malls have run their course, things have changed, the past is just that. I’m glad I was a part of it. Thanks for the video.
Greetings, Wallie! Seeing you try to open that mall door and it being locked brought back a a childhood memory for me. My mom and I went to our local mall one night and we were waiting at the front entrance for a taxi to take us back home. One of the doors was locked, and as people were leaving, they'd try that door and find that it was locked. I don't why, but I just thought it was the funniest thing watching person after person try that door. I couldn't stop laughing! So thank you for that, Wallie!
Nice videography.
It's so interesting to see the brutalist designs of many malls of the 70s and 80s. So much brick and stone.
So many memories from the 90's and early 2000's.
Thank you for the commentary and backstory of the Columbia Place Mall. I’m 20, born in Columbia and lived here until college. I remember going here growing up, although my family would go to Columbiana Centre more often as it was closer to us. Though it’s in great condition still it is sad to see how little activity is there now. Now the only Columbia mall that still has life inside it is Columbiana Centre. How times have changed.
I remember how beautiful it was inside. Great to be reminded of Columbia Place, I’ll hope against hope that a new owner takes over (wishful thinking I know).
Maybe this vid will bring some positive attention to the issue so that something can be done😊. Thanks for posting.
Dutch Square is really the one that just looks abandoned most times here in Columbia.
I love this amazing abandoned mall video
Really enjoy the great music very relaxing.thank you😊
I grew up going to the mall. Ever since the Village of Sandhills opened up. All the stores and movie theater went to Clemson Rd area. The hay day of this mall used to be the hangout spots and places to shop for birthdays, back to school shopping and Christmas.
This mall has potential it just the owner. It’s a beautiful mall just the owner don’t care.
Sandhills is just as empty. You can't go in there to a movie for fear of getting shot or a huge fight break out...
Now Sandhills area is dying
@@pdiddy5235 It's dead...been dead for at least two years...I haven't been there in at least that long because everything closed down...
Nice elevator
When living in Asheville, NC we would go to or around this mall while traveling to Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head. There were plenty of restaurants around the area and it was easy to pick up last minute supplies for a beach trip. Nice mall! I wonder how the restaurants in the vicinity are doing?
HORRIBLE. The only main thing or two I remember a couple of years back were equivalent to VERY gross greasy food from an independent vender and another that one could have assumed a high school student were running. Absolutely horrid compared to how it use to be. The size of the dead roaches I saw through a store window nearby were so disturbing it is vomit inducing to think about how any could even be that big mere less the concern that they could be anywhere else mere less the food court. Jesus, no.
Oh wow this is truly sad. I used to love going to this mall as a young girl and a teenager in the early 80/90’s . The arcades , movie theater and the Food court was really a nice place to meet up with my friends and fellow classmates. Some people will destroy anything! Sad just plain sad!

It is beautiful. I can't believe that Macy's has stayed there. I hope that it picks up again.
WOW, I have a lot of good memories of shopping here. Christmas time was always nice! Great video of old venue that still looks great. At least the AC works....
This is my childhood mall. I remember going here. Never buying anything because we were poor, but we'd still always go for some reason lol. Always thought it was so cool how it was designed. How it's 2 stories, but looks only 1 story on the outside.
This is the kind of mall I'd picture to show up in a movie. Like Problem Child same with some parts of Columbia too and more when more white people were probably coming to this mall in like 89 or 90.
Actually I also had a theory the Big Ben Healy character predicted Henry McMaster as a politician and made him more over exaggerated. And I also saw Twin Pines Mall in Back to the future similarities. I was staying across the street from this mall and at night I walked around it and I was thinking to myself. Where's Doc and Marty ? I'm expecting them to come down in a time machine at any time. And I pictured the alternate 1985 also because those surrounding areas are soooo run down.
I grew up in that Mall. I was a child of a single mother, and my older sister and brother took jobs there. My sister was a hair stylist and my brother worked at the taco joint. I have many memories (I'm 48 now). I remember when ZZ Top came through, and some heartthrob soap opra guy who I ended up getting an autograph from because my sister wanted it and I had no idea who he was. My favorite memory was when my sister took on a temporary job wrapping Christmas gifts for the customers coming out of Sears, and I helped her. Our favorite stores were Spencer's and the Arcade. It started getting bad in the late 90's with gangs and crime. I'm glad to see that seems cleaned up. But I left South Carolina in '94 and haven't been back.
Man back it’s it’s jay day this mall was off the chain it was one of the beutifullest malls around and it was definitely an attraction for Columbia South Carolina I’m not sure why this mall went down like it did I never thought I would see it in this state

I have never been to this mall before. If I have then I don’t remember going to this mall ever in my life. I mostly went to the Aiken mall in Aiken, South Carolina back in the day.
Great video!
Have a lot of good memories at this mall. Used to live close by, we'd walk there after school down the street. My mom and I would always go to eat dinner at a very nice restaurant there.
Very nice mall from an aesthetic and architectural standpoint. Sad it is now a dead mall from a retail standpoint. Macy's remains as the sole anchor, as Belk, Dillard's and JCPenney have relocated to other centers. Macy's was formerly Rich's of Atlanta, a nice upscale dept. store much missed. Nearest Macy's to Columbia are Greenville, SC, Charlotte, NC and Augusta, GA. In NC Macy's had acquired the former Hecht's stores, which were previously Thalhimer's from Virginia. Also there may be plans for some of Columbia Place to be converted to county offices or a lifestyle center, although Macy's may remain as they own their building.
I am very surprised that Macy's has stayed on as long as they have. This is a really nice mall.
I visited relatives near Baton Rouge a month ago, was early to meet them for dinner. I saw a Best Buy at The Mall of Louisiana. I needed something, went to the Best Buy, drove past the Macy's and I thought it was closed. There were MAYBE 20 cars outside the main entrance. The economic demise is everywhere.

You done a great job with this video! I live a block away and use to go here all the time
When I tell you this was the spot, it was the SPOT! They had EVERYTHING and it was right down the road from a bunch of rural communities. My grandfather worked on the design of the mall and was the foreman in charge of building it.
The surrounding neighborhoods contributed to the decline of this place. Gang warfare, open air drug sales, etc. The stores just cut their losses and left and the place never recovered.
Nice video editing- steppin up ❤
Yeah, it sucks to see this place like this. Back about 20 years ago it was a very busy area. But the neighborhood got rougher and you had a number of situations happen near it and people started leaving. It looked to be starting to fix itself but then the pandemic happened. Now its only a matter of time.
@WallieB26
*I'll never understand why they don't lower the rent. Having lots of tenants paying less rent is better than almost no tenants because then there is NO rent money at all* Bring in local stores.
Such a beautiful building in excellent shape! I give the most credit to the local management. It's clear the local management cares about the property, perhaps Moonbeam was able to keep the existing employees on after their bought the property!??!!?
I’m a Cola native, raised in Forest Acres, moved away for a few years just before Columbia Mall opened. I returned in ‘82 to attend USC, when this mall was in its heyday. I later moved to Atlanta, but have spent much of my adult life in Asia. I’m thinking of moving back to the Columbia area & building a home on Lake Murray, where we have some land. This is the closest mall to the Chapin area, about a 20 min drive, so it’s a bit of a disappointment to learn that’s it’s in such decline.
Living on Lake Murray you'll want to come to Irmo where Columbiana Mall is and everything else around it. Very very nice area. Most of Lexington is nice. I came of age in the 80s when this mall was indeed reaching its peak and I cherish the memories a great deal. Unfortunately the world moved on and it will never be the same. I wouldn't even go back to this area.
Amazing video! Always love the mall series the most, thanks for all your hard work!
nice beautiful big mall
12:10 store on the right used to be a Disney store that closed in 2003. No one has occupied that store since.
Wow! This video brings back so many memories. I worked in this mall, modeled in this mall, and this mall was a pleasant and happy place for many in the 80's.Its still hard to beleive 7:39 how it is today. It would be great if this beautiful place would be filled and operating strongly again. 🙏 ❤
I grew up going to this mall and the Toy's R Us next to it. Dad passed away when I was 13, I'm 43 now. My Mom passed early this year and I visited the mall one last time. It was sad to the point I almost had to fight back tears thinking about what it use to be. I swore I would never step foot in that building again. It's on life support.... time to let it go.

Remember it being crowded with Alabama fans back in 1992 for my first visit when the Tide visited.
Great video. If you ever get around to Long Island you gotta get to Sunrise mall before it closes and the Sun vet mall if its even open still. Smith Haven Mall is a lively mall still but cool to see. Long Island is also home to one of the last K Marts as you know
I haven’t been there in years. Used to go all the time. The last time I went it looked like a collection of bazaar’s from some third world country rather than the sleek polished department stores I remembered as a kid…
Even if malls were a huge thing, this mall would’ve still gone to crap. Back in 2007 I live 2 miles from this mall. I still live about 30 minutes away but that area and especially that mall are very unsafe. I worked at the Sears in 2010 and also Bestbuy across the street. The Sears was the worst place to work with horrible management and staff. There were arrests made daily in the food court. Horrible area and horrible mall
Thanks!

It joins the old Richland Fashion Mall in the time capsule of history.

I can't believe that Macy's hasn't relocated to another Columbia shopping center. Have they even added a Macy's Backstage store within a store to it? If they haven't that may be pretty telling about its future. They would probably do much better some place else as Belk and Dillard's are the only other two choices in the town now.
River Oaks Center in Calumet City managed to get a Macy's Backstage section. Despite that I'm convinced while it isn't totally dead, that it's slowly declining. So I think there's a chance this store might get Backstage, at some point.
Now that I think about it in the Chicago area, the only store where I didn't see a Macy's Backstage section was Louis Joliet Mall. Joliet was once on the 'neighborhood store' list a few years ago, so I worry Macy's might have a higher chance of closing that store. It was still open as of September of last year(when I last visited). And as I always very closely check Macy's store closing lists, Joliet remains open for now. I worry it won't be, for much longer.
@@BoratWanksta Yes. The reason I posted that is Macy's has only one other store in S.C. in the upstate in Greenville and they got a Backstage and remodel around 3 years ago but it's in a much more vibrant mall.
I know that online shopping 🛍 (mostly from Amazon, Walmart, and Target) is crushing and demolishing the mall sales. I remember being at the Lycoming Mall for years growing up, and it is closed for a month or so, and there is just the Susquehanna Valley Mall near where I live.
I think if there was a Nike store and some old business were brought back( like rebooting TV shows) it would suceed.
It looks like a ghost town, I’m expecting the tumbleweeds to roll through the streets at any moment😂😂😂 I use to go there back in the days before the internet came up with online ordering, man how the years go by😢😢😢 Still live here in Columbia and roll by shaking my head
I'm in Charleston and the Citadel Mall is bad also, I remember when it first opened it was very busy and the talk of the city but like anything over time it fades away. the internet is the death of these malls in the US shutting down.
I remember for Christmas shows the Christmas themes, the Christmas everything. It seems like when they built The Village of Sandhill a few miles away on the same street this mall went straight to HELL.
The Village of Sandhill and Columbianna Mall has taken it’s place.
If they close it down, maybe they can use it as housing for the homeless?
What a spectacle that would be!
that little constant buzzing sound is depressing 😭

Online shopping and the gangs were too bad at this mall.
That’s exactly what I was saying. No clue why people say this mall was a great mall…… this mall was very unsafe with the wannabe gangsters going to this mall daily. It was so bad they implemented a “no sagging pants” rule and started arresting people for it. That was even short lived
My brothers and I hung out here in the late 70s then one of my brothers and I worked here for years when it was in its heyday in the 80s! It was owned by JVJ at the time.
It became a nightmare for proprietors and property owners to keep it open with all crime, shoplifting and resulting law suits, etc. Wal Marts have closed for similar reasons. Yes it is Sad!!
