Hey! Look at me and tell me if you've known me before! I watched 'Inland Empire' last night and found myself in the mood to make something inspired by the great ambient pieces used in the soundtrack (specifically 'Polish Night Music' by David Lynch and Marek Zebrowski). The piano originates in a field recording I made at a train station - you can hear people moving around in a rush in the background, and there was a child making a lot of noise on the piano, which I've sampled and edited into an ominous loop. I basically improvised over that with some synth strings and also ran the piano loop through Ableton's Convert to MIDI function, which created another layer of MIDI piano underneath struggling to interpret the messy lo-fi recording of the loop. Happy belated birthday to David Lynch too - this JAMuary entry is part of a larger attempt at psychically manifesting a new Lynch film sooner rather than later.
