Yet another brilliant interview with an amazing guest. There’s always something to learn about the guests who they’ve worked with their inspiration and just musical tidbits in general. Thomas Dolby is a LEGEND 🤩
Fantastic. Been a fan of all his albums ever since I was a teen in the 1980s.I saw Thomas perform in Boston in July with the Totally Tubular Festival, and posted a couple videos of his performances on RUclips. Also read his book Prevailing Wind last summer, and it was a great read, really dug deep into sailing. His first book is also well worth a read. Pretty much anything he does is gold.
So exciting to see/hear one of my all time musical heroes being interviewed on my favourite podcast! Thanks for making it happen guys and a great interview as always. Really looking forward to seeing Thomas live in Manchester in August 😊
@@TheKeyboardChronicles I've seen Thomas perform 3 times over the years - the first time was way back in 1984 on 'The Flat Earth' tour (hard to believe it's 40 years!). The second time was around the release of 'Astronauts and Heretics' in 1992 - a great, intimate gig with an amazing band in a club in London called the Mean Fiddler, literally a 10 minute walk from where I lived at the time! Finally, I saw him do an entirely solo gig with all the technology, in Manchester around 15 years ago. Hopefully he'll make it back to Australia in the near future 🙂
Saw him and others at the Totally Tubular Festival in Laval, Quebec. Great show! He was the primary reason I went, driving all the way from New Hampshire, of course the others all worth seeing as well!
Pretty cool interview! I love how his album Aliens Ate My Buick! Like Thomas, I want to create music that includes specific elements I like from my least favorite genres: the drum grooves of J Dilla, the shred guitar solos of Prince, and the vocal style of Ella Fitzgerald. I wish I could make a hip hop song in the style of Dilla without the lyrical themes he’s attached with, especially in the post Dilla work from jazz pianist Robert Glasper. I wish for a new song that ends with an extended shred fest guitar solo like Prince’s tribtue to George Harison. 🤓 As for the current world of jazz singers, I want to hear original material, rather than the “great American songbook.” Again, an amazing interview! 1:08:03

I got that one sentence wrong… I love his album Aliens Ate My Buick. Also, I didn’t get the word “tribute” right.
